I earned my Associate and Bachelor degrees both through the University of Grantham while serving my country full time and fulfilling the role of Mom to three very active children .
Strengths
I am self-directed and motivated from within to learn new subjects and it drives me to complete my assignments with a great amount of attention to detail. My reservoir runs over with life experiences in which will serve me well as a resource for learning.
What I need to Work on I need to discard my preconceived notions about what college is and isn't. I must open my mind to the new experience and embrace the knowledge that I am obtaining to help me in the future. Reading the discussion posts will help me see …show more content…
It is essential that I remain mindful of the fact that it is necessary for me to see the big picture of a subject before I can master the details. Before I begin to study a reading assignment I will skim through the material and get an overview. I must have faith in my abilities and know that I will understand the new material and will be able to use it later on in life.
When necessity arises I must not be apprehensive to reach out for help. If I feel that too overwhelmed I will communicate with my professor and explain where I am struggling and the steps I have taken to try and understand my assignment. This will enable the professor in assisting me in the area I am struggling to understand.
Learning Style
I elected to take the NC State University Learning Styles questionnaire to see if what I think my learning styles are match up to what the standardized test indicates. The results were accurate.
Active and Reflective I am pretty much balanced between an active/reflective learner but lean slightly more toward being an active learner. I easily retain and understand information by getting hands on. I busy myself with taking notes, discussing what I am learning with others or getting elbows deep into the project. I prefer to study alone. It is hard for me to sit through a lecture without doing something physical such as taking

Reflective Writing

...How do I . . . Write a Reflection? Why reflective writing? Reflection offers you the opportunity to consider how your personal experiences and observations shape your thinking and your acceptance of new ideas. Professors often ask students to write reading reflections. They do this to encourage you to explore your own ideas about a text, to express your opinion rather than summarise the opinions of others. Reflective writing can help you to improve your analytical skills because it requires you to express what you think, and more significantly, how and why you think that way. In addition, reflective analysis asks you to acknowledge that your thoughts are shaped by your assumptions and preconceived ideas; in doing so, you can appreciate the ideas of others, notice how their assumptions and preconceived ideas may have shaped their thoughts, and perhaps recognize how your ideas support or oppose what you read. Types of Reflection Experiential Reflection: Popular in professional programs, like business, nursing, forensics and education, reflection is an important part of making connections between theory and practice. When you are asked to reflect upon experience in a placement, you do not only describe your experience, but you evaluate it based on ideas from class. You can assess a theory or approach based on your observations and practice and evaluate your own knowledge and skills within your professional field. This opportunity to take the time to think ...

Analysis of Vark Learning Strategies

...Running head: ANALYSIS OF VARK LEARNING STRATEGIES Analysis of VARK Learning Strategies “The acronym VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic sensory modalities that are used for learning information (Fleming & Mills, 1992)”. Each person learns in a unique yet definable way, and through the utilization of the VARK system, categories have been established to assist in understanding and promoting effective learning by the individual. The VARK system is based on a questionnaire where each person describes their response to a given situation, and the compilation of the answers then allows these results to place the individual within one of the four identified groups, with the addition of a fifth being an all-encompassing “multimodal learning preference (Fleming & Mills, 1992)”. The design of the program assists the learner to not only receive their identified learning style, but allows for the instruction of changes or habits that the individual may find helpful in developing their learning effectiveness. Visual learning includes the use of printed graphs, charts, and visual comparisons by using labels, arrows, and symbols that the individual can associate with items of interest. The visual learner equates symbols and figures, and this allows them to process and retain the information more effectively. This style of learning was identified with the lowest number upon completion of the personal questionnaire. Aural/Auditory learning involves...
