“Overcoming My Criminal History”

It was a bright hot day in June 2008. I double checked all lights and signals before I started driving. I was wearing my seatbelt and drove meticulously as instructed in the Arizona driver license manual. The cold air flowing through the vents of the Nissan Sentra, that I rented to do the job, had me feeling confident and and relaxed. As I cruised passed the bright shining dome of the Arizona Cardinals stadium I peeked in my rear view mirror and there they were, the last two things I wanted to see right now. One blue, the other red, sitting high atop the roof of a Glendale police car. They were catching up fast. “No problem Carlos, be cool. Bob Gibney for my English 101 course. In his course he created the assignment for his students to identify a real problem and find solutions. At firstI started thinking about general things like save the planet type stuff. Dr. Gibbney instructed us to get into groups and brainstorm about our problems. I had always considered my criminal history as a taboo subject at school. I was afraid of being jujed. As I started to brainstorm with my partners, Amber and Harry, I began to feel more confident about sharing a real and personal problem because they began to share real problems with me. After sharing the truth about my past with my small group I gained the courage to share my real problem with the entire cllass. When Dr. Gibbney asked for examples on the real problem we would write about I shouted, “Overcoming my criminal history” and he wrote it on the board. I chose shared the story of my arrest with the rest of my class it was read out loud and shown on the class projector screen. I embraced my past in order to share a lesson with my fellow students. I was now ready to attack my problem, head on and without
