A: Narrative/Descriptive Writing
Parasailing (Vignette)
Narrative and descriptive writing is the writing style I enjoy the most. The vignette I wrote about is a story that happened to me when I was younger and this kind of writing allows me to relive this memory on paper. I find this kind of writing easier to write and easy to relate to because it’s all about me. It is harder for me to write and relate to a book that we read in class since it isn’t about my personal life. This kind of writing style helps me reflect on the something I learned because I have seen how much I have grown this school year based off of what I wrote about and my writing style. This kind of writing style allows me to describe …show more content…
An example of where my annotations showed critical thinking was in the book Dandelion Wine by Ryan Bradbury when Francine was yelling for Lavinia and said, “Hold me, Lavinia, hold me, I’m cold, oh, I’ve never been so cold in all my life!”(161). When I annotated this quote, I asked myself, why is Francine yelling at Lavinia and why is Francine keep repeating herself. I thought about what the author might have wanted the reader to infer and I figured out that the word cold was Francine’s way of saying she was scared. I inferred this because during this time in the book, they were in the ravine and Francine was yelling so I concluded, that Francine wanted Lavinia to hold her tight because the ravine was a very scarey place to …show more content…
This routine includes trying whatever is assigned even if it is difficult for me. If I got stuck on something, I would ask for the help I needed. I always benefit from getting suggestions from teachers because it makes me and my work improve. (Word Count: 222)

Question #2:
Within class, I feel that my engagement is good. Although I may not always participate at times that I should, I try to my hardest to join in on the discussions going on. During group work, I always say what my opinions are and help out to the best of my ability. Usually, the group that I work with splits up the work evenly so we all do the same amount of work.
Throughout this year I feel that my verbal, writing, and listen contributions have improved greatly. The one that has improved the most would be my verbal presentation because it has increased from always having to talk in front of the class and giving a few presentations. My writing and listen contributions have also improved this year, which will help me in the rest of my high school classes!
Next year, I plan on improving my participation and contribution to the class. With this improvement, I feel that I will do better on inclass activities because I can understand what is going on within the class. (Word Count:

...Luke Martino Writing 102 12/9/15 Writing 102 Portfolio Throughout this semester of Writing 102, I have been assigned to write four essays that have stressed the course competencies of subject matter knowledge, writing process knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, genre knowledge, discourse community knowledge, and meta-cognition. Through the process of drafting, editing, and revising three out of the four papers, I think I have been effectively able to absorb three of those course competencies; subject matter knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, and writing process knowledge. The first paper I was assigned to write for Writing 102 was a literacy narrative. For this paper, I was told to write about a past experience that helped influence my current writing and reading qualities. The core competencies that were involved in this essay were writing process knowledge and subject matter knowledge. I used writing process knowledge when I was told to generate ideas for my essay. I began by thinking of five possible ideas and from there I created a brainstorming web out of the two topics I thought would be the most interesting. Shortly after starting, I realized I could only build an effective brainstorming web from one idea. I decided to use the first time I forgot my lines in a play as my main idea for the essay. After I completed the brainstorming web and finished taking notes on what I remembered from the incident I started to follow the writing process that consisted of prewriting...

Dfa Case Analysis

...Case Analysis: Dimensional Fund Advisors 1. Describe the philosophy of DFA. What sort of market behavior are they counting on? * DFA believes in three principles: 1. The Efficient Market Theory. That is, the stock market is efficient and no one has the ability to consistently pick stocks that will beat the market. Over any given period, some lucky investors will outperform the market while others will underperform. DFA felt that the market price of any firm’s stock incorporated all public information and therefore did not do any fundamental analysis on the firm in question. 2. The value of sound academic research. For example, DFA’s founders believed that small-stock investing could yield high returns to investors. They formulated this belief on the Ph.D. dissertation research of Rolf Banz of the University of Chicago, which showed that small stocks had consistently outperformed large stocks between 1926 and the late 1970s. 3. The ability of skilled traders to contribute to a fund’s profits even when the investment is inherently passive. DFA’s investment fund had a semi-active strategy between those of actively managed funds and those of pure index funds. * DFA counts on market behavior that reflects the following concepts: 1. The Beta is Dead. Stocks with high-beta do not have consistently higher returns than low-beta stocks. That is, greater risk does not guarantee greater reward. 2. The Size Effect (Small Minus Big). Based on the research...
