In this essay, a definition of incidents that require special circumstances to be adopted with regards to pre-hospital care will be given. This will include information on what a major incident is and what can be done about them. A comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the command and control structure will be demonstrated. This will include the roles within the command structure, why they are there and how they change to suit the incident. The command framework will also be outlined. The role of differing agencies will be appraised, evaluated and synthesised within different incidents. This will outline how agencies work together, how and when different roles take priority over others and their willingness and requiredness to work together. …show more content…
A significant issue that can arise with the occurrence of a major incident is the pressure that will be put on the healthcare providers that are responding to it. Major incidents can involve such a number of casualties that healthcare facilities will become overloaded with patients and therefore will be left unable to cope with the influx of patients (McKee, et al., 2007). NHS Emergency Planning Guidance 2005 (Department of Health, 2005) states that when this happens, the normal funding capacity of the facilities should be, up to doubled, to cope with the amount of people attending the facility. However, it should be recognised that, with the increase in numbers beyond the usual capacity of the healthcare facility. This reason this is important is because, with a proper structure in place, a chain of command can be established where the most well-trained operative can take a more senior role and all parties involved can work towards a common goal as a team. This minimises risk and optimises the decision-making process.
NHS ambulance services adopt a three-tier command structure comprising of a strategic (gold) commander, a tactical (silver) commander and an operational (bronze) commander. This system can be abbreviated to GSB. This is a system in which there is a cascade of command, meaning one has specific authority over another. When this system is implemented, an individual’s day to day rank within an organisation holds no relevance to where they stand in the command structure.
