...English-I 10 November 2016 The Active Procrastination Procrastinating is better than spending time stressing out one’s self. The world has long regarded procrastination as a self-handicapping and dysfunctional behaviour but if we look into the books of history, procrastination was not considered a bad thing. The Greeks and Romans considered it as a noble thing and the rulers/Kings were expected to sit around and literally do nothing till something needed their attention. The idea of procrastination being a bad thing developed in the Puritanical era and is still considered the same. In the present study, the authors proposed that not all procrastination behaviours either are harmful or lead to negative...

Hence, the relevant conceptual, theoretical, and empirical work is reviewed, drawing upon correlational, experimental, and qualitative findings. A meta-analysis of procrastination’s possible causes and effects, based on 691 correlations, reveals that neuroticism, rebelliousness, and sensation seeking show only a weak connection. Strong and consistent predictors of procrastination were task aversiveness, task delay, selfefficacy, and impulsiveness, as well as conscientiousness and its facets of self-control, distractibility, organization, and achievement motivation. These effects prove consistent with temporal motivation theory, an integrative hybrid of expectancy theory and hyperbolic discounting. Continued research into procrastination should not be delayed, especially because its prevalence appears to be growing. Keywords: procrastination, irrational delay, pathological decision making, meta-analysis Procrastination is extremely prevalent. Although virtually all of us have at least dallied with dallying, some have made it a way of life. Estimates indicate that 80%–95% of college students engage in procrastination (Ellis & Knaus, 1977; O’Brien, 2002), approximately 75% consider...

...Overcoming Personal Procrastination Overcoming Personal Procrastination Abstract This paper will identify a personal problem of procrastination, where I will find solutions to help correct this problem, evaluate the information I have gathered, and explain how I will use the information to implement correction to my personal procrastination. Overcoming Personal Procrastination In my life I think I have always procrastinated. I remember since childhood in elementary school and middle school finishing projects the last day or late into the night before the project was due. Through this class, I have learned that it is partially due to my intense perfectionism. I get nervous and sometimes anxious of the impending project. It also has to do with the uncomfortable feeling of the unknown. When I do not know what I am going to do for a project, or I haven’t read what is expected, I push it off. I tend to always hit my deadlines, but do so in a hurry which does not help me to actually learn what I am working for. I don’t always procrastinate, but I undeniably do it frequently. I definitely always mean the best- as I want to be the best. Unfortunately, procrastination does not do me any justice. In order to overcome my procrastination I will need to do more than recognize it. Of course, though, it is a very important first step to fixing the problem. Besides understanding procrastination and how it develops, I need to do more research on understanding it and find...

...Nearly all people are guilty of a little procrastination. Everyone has at one point or another found him or herself putting off something he or she would rather not do. There’s always a later time to accomplish these tasks, but with so much going on in daily lives, finding that later time may be more difficult than one would think. With time not being guaranteed, procrastination brings many risks. People who wait until the last minute to finish things that have been put off increase the likeliness of their being rushed and put under extra stress. Why do people procrastinate? There are many reasons. Some people may just not have enough time to get everything done in one day, while others may put off tasks in the pursuit of more enjoyable distractions. Many people may procrastinate because they think there will be plenty of time to get tasks accomplished at a later point. No matter what the reason for procrastination, putting off tasks often causes more problems than just completing them when one had the chance. Whether washing dishes or finishing a research project, procrastination can make tasks even more difficult to complete. There are many tasks that lack the allure of watching television or hanging out. Few people enjoy doing dishes and will put off this task, but by doing so these people are only creating a bigger mess for themselves. The effort required to clean these dishes is now increased as more dishes are added to the pile and food hardens on the...

...Study Habits and Its Effect on Students Academic Achievement A Research Paper Presented to The Faculty of the English Department College of Business Adventist University of the Philippines Silang, Cavite In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Course Communication Arts 2 Raddison Brian Dorado March 8, 2016 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Research has concluded that it’s not how smart students are but how motivated they are and how they study that determines their growth in academic achievement (Society for Research in Child Development, 2012.) According to Kou Murayama (2012), while intelligence as assessed by IQ tests is important in the early stages of developing mathematical competence, motivation and study habits play a more important role in student’s subsequent growth. A student who does not have good study habits cannot do well in class recitation, daily quizzes, and actual pupil demonstration since he/she did not study and review the lessons learned. Good study habits are the tools to success (Losare, 2009). Losare (2009) also stated that nowadays, many children are engaged in computer games, cutting classes, watching television, excessive playing, and, worst of all, are involved in vices such as illegal drugs, gambling, and crimes. Others also use their intelligence in foolishness and bad deeds. They should be able to balance and manage their time wisely. A recent survey showed that nearly 40% of parents say high school is stressful for...

...Procrastination: A PUPian Student Must Overcome By: Elloso, Princess L. Yan, Rochelle C. Chapter I : Problem and Background A. Background of the study When you look for the meaning of “procrastination” in the dictionary, it says that “it is an act of putting something off until later”. Obviously it is same for the Filipino term “Mañana Habit” means “mamaya na lang”. This habit is something we have learned from the Spaniards. And as we can see, most of the students do this habit. How it works? First of all, you need to do something NOW, but then you decide to do it later. As a result of the delay, you end up not doing it. Now, you tell yourself or somebody that you will do it TOMORROW. And tomorrow comes, the same cycle happens. Procrastination is finding the most difficult way of doing something. It’s jumping from one idea to another. Instead of starting your work, you procrastinate. You’re looking out the window, you’re staring at your neighbour, you’re watching television and you’re wasting your time instead that you have finish your work. In Psychology, there is this thing called “Present Bias”. It means being unable to grasp what you want. A change over time, what you want now isn’t the same thing you will want later. Procrastination is all about choosing WANT over SHOULD because you don’t have a plan for those times when you expect to be tempted. You must be depth at thinking about thinking because there will always be a war on your brain. B. Statement...

A few students use procrastination as an active, strategic behavior (Chu & Choi, 2005; Corkin, Yu, & Lindt, 2011; Steel, 2007); however, the present study uses the most common definition of the term procrastination to refer to the passive, needless delay of work on any academic task. In Zimmerman’s model, procrastination falls in the performance control phase, and has been described as the quintessential failure of self-regulation (Steel, 2007). In general, the academic procrastination behavior is a problem for a number of college or university students. A student procrastinates with regard to starting an assignment, and is unable to devote enough time to complete...

...The Procrastination Problem By Susan J. Letham Procrastinators delay until the day after tomorrow what they know they should have done the day before yesterday. What does procrastination look like? We all put off working on unpleasant or tedious tasks from time to time. Washing the car, taking out garbage, cleaning windows, or making stressful phone calls are no one's idea of a fun way to spend time. But where most of us do this only occasionally, procrastinators do it most of the time, and that's where the problems start. Procrastination is a stress factor Procrastination is a behavior that leads to stress, because it makes plans and wishes fail at what should be the point of fulfillment: theater tickets and vacation packages sell out before procrastinators get around to calling. Planes take off, deadlines pass, jobs go to other applicants--the ones who got their resumes in on time. Procrastination has negative effects The Procrastination Research Group at Carleton University in Canada did an online survey. They received 2,700 responses to the question, "To what extent is procrastination having a negative impact on your happiness?" Almost one person in two (46%) said "quite a bit" or "very much," and around one person in five (18%) reported an "extreme negative effect." Procrastination threatens happiness Though procrastination is often trivialized, procrastinators suffer when their careers crash or when they otherwise fail to reach their potential. Long term and wide...

...Research Strategy To Find A Solution For Procrastination Dakota Swanson GEN/200 20th September 2010 Research Strategy To Find A Solution For Procrastination “Procrastination is the Thief of Time; Year after year it steals, till all are fled” (Young, 1742, Night Thoughts I. 18). A more detailed definition, “Procrastination, the habit of putting tasks off to the last possible minute, can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life. Side effects include missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, stress, overwhelm, resentment, and guilt. The behavior pattern of procrastination can be triggered in many different ways, so you won't always procrastinate for the same reason. Sometimes you'll procrastinate because you're overwhelmed with too much on your plate, and procrastination gives you an escape. Other times you'll feel tired and lazy, and you just can't get going” (Pavlina, 2001, Overcoming Procrastination by Steve Pavlina). Procrastination like any other problem can be controlled if not solved. There are various ways in which one can begin the curative process. It is common knowledge that the first step to recovery is admittance of the problem, and then making that conscious effort to remedy that setback. To make that step, you must identify the root causes of your procrastination, how often do you procrastinate, what tasks you procrastinate more for whether is if for job related tasks or personal engagements, and the consequences. How it affects...

...Research Strategy Paper GEN200 Research Strategy Paper This research strategy paper is about a problem for me in my day to day life and how I would like to come up with a strategy to solve the issue. I will briefly discuss my problem that I’m having in my day-to-day life. Identifying what kinds of information I can use to help in solving this issue and where I can get this information from. I will be going over the process that I will use to evaluate the information that I have gathered. The types of things I will consider as I evaluate the information. Last, I will explain how to use the information I have gathered to resolve the problem or issue at hand. The problem or issue that I am having in my day-to-day life is procrastination. I don’t know why, but for some reason it’s hard for me to get started on any task. I found myself getting very distracted at times and usually wind up avoiding the situation. I think I work better under pressure so I tend to put things off until the last-minute hoping that the time crunch will push me to get the task done. When I know I have to get something done I usually think I have plenty of time and start to blow things off. An example of this is a trip that I have been planning to San Diego in order for me to obtain a birth certificate. My birth certificate is needed in order for me to apply for jobs and other needed benefits. If I did this by mail the process would be more complicated in which it...

...Alicia Henderson CRN: 9020781966 Research Paper The problem that I am going to attempt to solve is procrastination. I have a horrible problem with procrastination, most of the time I am not too bad with it, but there are times when I just don’t want to do something and I will keep putting it off till I am forced to have to do it. I wish I would just get it done and not have to worry about it. So I want to discover ways to manage my time effectively and hopefully stave off the ability to procrastinate. The information that I will gather will be about time management skills, how to keep a schedule and how to say no. I will research using Google to find how other people manage their time, and what steps they take to keep to a schedule. I will also research how to best manage a busy schedule and make sure that everything that needs to get done is getting done and how to recognize when I am procrastinating and the steps I can take to avoid those traps. I will look at articles, e-books and forums for information and tips. For my selected problem it is not necessary to have scientific methods to help solve it, I almost think it best to learn from others with the same concerns and the steps they took to solve it. So I think the forums are probably my best bet. I will also look for polite ways to tell people that I am not available. Especially since this is one of the major factors for my procrastination. I tend to say yes, just because what I really need...

...Personal responsability Personal responsibility means carrying out your own purpose, making that one promise to yourself and following through with it so that your life in all areas can be complete without complications. While attending school possessing this quality is very important to succeed in school. Personal responsibility is taking responsibility for your own actions and knowing what is right or wrong for yourself. Personal responsibility is necessary for college success because it creates a back-bone for what your about to accomplish. Class-time, studying, class mates, and teachers all need some sort of special attention, a time for just that one thing and to do you would need a promise; a promise to yourself to be and do the best that you can. First and foremost is to figure out you weaknesses what have you learned from past experiences. We all learn from our experiences which then takes you to different places in life and that starts from the taking responsibility for your own actions. We have to set goals and rules and promises to make all things work, but we also need to know what is most important than the other. With this the responsibility of it all comes into play. Playing something over again in your head, re-evaluating the situation to come to a conclusion of why and how you can do better. ...ticket for Broadway show. We do not start our Christmas shopping until Christmas Eve… Procrastination is a curse to modern people. Every body knows that it is a hindrance on the way toward success. But we still deliberately postpone our job in spite of knowing this fact. Why is the evilness of procrastination so powerful? Is there anything under the curse? What on earth makes us procrastinate? People tend to avoid the job they dislike. For most of us, a lack of motivation plays a major role in keeping us away from focusing on our tasks. When we are assigned with something that are not interesting to us, we cultivate a listless attitude towards them. We are reluctant to even think about them. Even when we start our job, we constantly get distracted, especially ones that do not take lots of commitment on their part. Checking what’s up on Facebook group or our email perfectly satisfy this purpose. We assume we won’t waste much time on those unrelated things but actually we do. By clicking a link on Facebook page, we are attracted to thousands other links on it. By entering the e-mail box, even if there’s nothing new, we can’t help but start deleting the past spams. Why? We are simply avoiding something that we are not motivated to do. On the other hand, we procrastinators fear making mistakes. We worship perfectionism and it directly leads to procrastination. Oftentimes, procrastination is a sign of fear of making mistakes. We sometimes have extremely high or unrealistic expectations...
