QUESTION 3 History and objectives “Don’t give me money give me a future” This is a LHC foundation Trust, it was formed in 2002 in memory of the late Graham Cochrane’s father, Lawrence Henry Cochrane. Graham was inspired by his father’s life and the values he instilled in his family. Thanks to the values and Christian principles that his father had instilled in his family, Graham established this Trust to give something back to the community in which he lived. The I Care Campaign started as an Awareness campaign, with the advertisements on radio and in the press, warning the public that giving money to street children is not a solution and in fact contributes to the problem. “The worst thing you can do is to give a street child money, but the next worse thing you can do is nothing!” Graham Cochrane. Rather than giving money directly to street children, the public were encouraged to make a monthly contribution via a debit order to I Care, so that funding could be responsibly directed to those children in need. Each donor received a disc to display on the driver’s side of the front windscreen of their vehicle, to indicate their support to children on the street, through I Care. The Outreach teams informed street children about the significance of the vehicle discs. Motorists with I Care discs are supporting street children through the organisation. In response to the huge need and with wonderful public and corporate support this organisation started to adopt a holistic approach to the problem. Initial areas of support included outreach to children on the streets, educational support, financial and food support for existing shelters (housing), and skills development programmes, specifically the Development Sailing Programme, undertaken through the Royal Natal Yacht Club. I Care continues to move forward and now supports projects in six operational areas, working to fulfil Graham’s dream of alleviating the plight of street children. I Care is a non-profit organisation devoted to finding meaningful and sustainable solutions to the challenge of street children in South Africa and a ministry that promotes a Christian ethos. I care is community based and engage directly with children on the streets. I care believes that hundreds of children find themselves in the streets driven from home by poverty and abuse only to became trapped on the streets in a life of drugs ,sexual exploitation ,begging and crime. These children are the most innocent victims of society, sadly we often ignore or offer them money, which does not help them to get off the street. I care believes that they deserve a future. Their aim is to provide these kids rehabilitation, housing, education, aftercare and work skills. They also have an awareness program which educates the public that giving street children money is not a solution and the outreach program which initiates the process of rebuilding and restoring.

QUESTION 4 The nature of volunteer work I am part of the education and aftercare team. As part of a team I deal with children who are about twelve to sixteen years of age. As part of education team I do bible study and also engage in life skills programs with the children. As I care is a Christian organisation they believe that the foundations of life is the bible, so in order for the children to be transformed they need the bible. In bible study I discuss certain topics about God and faith. How they relate with God and how they relate their own situations with God. I have to make it very interesting and brief, this is because most of them have a short attention span. Sometimes we go outside or I demonstrate to them by using pictures. As part of life skills programs I discuss with them self-image and sex. We all engage in these topics, and I like getting personal with them sharing my own experiences in life. We use different methods every day. Most importantly self-image is about getting to know themselves better and we help each other understand our own identity. And the problems they are facing as teenagers. Sex education I educate them about sexual intercourse, gender based violence, sexual abuse and what God says about sex. Also how they can protect themselves against sexual abuse. Furthermore they share with me the experiences as street kids and from their former homes too. In terms of aftercare I just look after them, make sure they do not run back to the streets. With the team we just provide food, great chats and make them feel welcomed.

Introduction Schizophrenia, or mental illnesses in general isn't something new. It isn't a new age ideal which popped up out of nowhere. Even in the time of the Egyptians, there were reported cases of mental illnesses, but back then, they did not have the knowledge that we do today, so as Yuhas (2013) states, they simply deemed that those who displayed the symptoms of mental illnesses, such as those who had issues with concentration, those who were delirious or those with dwindling attention spans as simply suffering from emotional distress. It's not just the Egyptians, though. As Nizamie and Goyal (2010) point out, the ancient Indian text known as the Atharva-Veda also speak of mental illnesses, but to them back then, they were simply divine afflictions and curses sent from the gods who were angry at those who suffered. They also go on to elaborate on the Atharva-Veda, revealing that in the ancient text, there were detailed descriptions of conditions which sound similar to both bipolar disorders and schizophrenia, with many...
