Quality of a Business Leader

Walt Disney was an innovator and a visionary. But he was also one of the most successful business leaders of his time. Here are eight principles that made Walt Disney one of the greatest icons of the 20th century: 1. Make people happy: Walt was always striving to make people happy. During the fall of 1918, Disney attempted to enlist for military service. Rejected because he was only 16 years of age, Walt joined the Red Cross and was sent overseas, where he spent a year driving an ambulance and chauffeuring Red Cross officials. His ambulance was covered from stem to stern -- not with stock camouflage, but with drawings and cartoons. He keeps that morale with his whole life. 2. Provide a promise, not a product: The legend goes that Walt Disney was sitting on a bench watching his daughters ride a carousel when he came up with the concept for Disney World. He noticed amusement parks and state fairs were always littered and poorly organized, and the employees were generally rude and resentful.
His wife once asked, “Why do you want to build an amusement park? They’re so dirty.” To which Walt replied, “That’s the point. Mine won’t be.” From day one, Disney has focused on “the experience” as a key component to increasing the value of its parks. 3. Always exceed customers’ expectations: One of the reasons the Disney tradition stands the test of time is that Walt Disney was more critical of his creations than anyone else could ever possibly be. He was a relentless perfectionist with a keen eye for detail, often forcing projects to go over budget and past deadline because he wasn’t satisfied with the finished product. 4. Pursue your passion, and the money will follow: Walt Disney went bankrupt more than once, leveraging everything he had in terms of assets in order to build his studio, his films and his dreams. The more profit one project yielded, the bigger

Eastern Business Leadership

...lives. When one looks to the East, we find the ideas of Confucianism and Taoism present in so many aspects of our daily and business lives. Though the current government of China (PRC) would like to consider itself not Confucian, its people still practice many of the ways taught by the great masters. The question arises, "can the ideas and ideals taught by Confucius and Tao, be relevant to the business practices of the West?" I believe this not to be a black or white answer but somewhere in between. It is essential for today’s business leader to understand this gray area where East meets West, especially in regards to leadership. While Western influences in leadership such as Plato, Shakespeare, Machiavelli, and others, have depicted the leader as having certain qualities, only some of these hold true in the Eastern concepts of leadership. What are the core leadership values as put forth by Confucius and Taoism? Foremost is morality. Confucius tells us: “He who rules by moral force (te) is like the pole-star, which remains in its place while all the lesser stars do homage to it.” (Waley, Confucius 88) Likewise, his feelings on governance were clear, "…govern them by moral force, keep order among them by ritual and they will keep their self respect and come to you of their own accord.” (Waley, Confucius 88) Here we find a leader, not only moral, but also respecting ritual and tradition in all aspects. Tradition was most important for Confucius. When...

...implementation. To achieve this, managers must undertake the following functions organizing, planning, staffing, directing, and controlling. Leadership is just one important component of the directing function. A manager cannot just be a leader, he also needs formal authority to be effective. "For any quality initiative to take hold, senior management must be involved and act as a role model. This involvement cannot be delegated." In some circumstances, leadership is not required. For example, self motivated groups may not require a single leader and may find leaders dominating. The fact that a leader is not always required proves that leadership is just an asset and is not essential. Managers and leaders have differences in perspectives, thus the way they see things. Managers think incrementally, whilst leaders think radically. "Managers do things right, while leaders do the right thing.". This means that managers do things by the book and follow company policy, while leaders follow their own intuition, which may in turn be of more benefit to the company. A leader is more emotional than a manager. "Men are governed by their emotions rather than their intelligence". This quotation illustrates why teams choose to follow leaders. Initiative in Business

...Business and Leadership I woke up one day, listening to the people around me thinking that I have reached a level in my career that was my full potential and sad to say many around me thought that was acceptable; except me. The desire to expand my abilities as a manager and leader in the business world has motivated me to create a plan and take my own initiative and drive my team to be consistent in reaching the company goals, initiative on writing company processes and last but not least how, to bring a team together. Initiative is defined as, “The initiative to drive and achieve results” and i have made this definition a staple in my life. According to Kristie 2010, the list of quality that many company wants to train their leaders, “are not consistent--they contain all sorts of different characteristics.” (p.61). Companies have the urge to perform well however, they don’t spend the time needed in training leaders, helping leaders to reach the set goals to achieve a proficient level. Every goal has to be achieved and without initiative, the business will go nowhere. Even athletes have a lot of initiative to win the game and server as a example for me to always show initiative as a leader.” (Shukla, 2009). As indicated in Leadership 2006, “for business an executive, remaining calm in a crisis or situation is a key… However, executives often panic as though it is”. From this we can appreciate the right training, experience, and skill will make you a better leader Over...

...social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.” An effective leader will accomplish goals, not necessarily by performing an act, but through influencing others to do so. A leader’s words and actions should always match, as leading with actions, instead of words, is crucial to success. To be a successful leader, I am of the belief that he or she should possess certain qualities. Some of the qualities I believe a leader should possess are: flexibility, accountability, patience, creativity, humility, self-discipline, good listening and coaching skills, perseverance and courage. I also believe a good leader will be an equally good follower. The willingness to be led is one of the more important qualities I feel a leader should possess. As a leader, it is imperative that he or she is humble and able to learn from its followers. A leader and its followers should be a team of working parts that are effectively communicating and learning from each other. Having effective two-way communication skills, being able to listen and present ideas, reduces potential barriers amongst the team. An effective leader should ensure that his or her followers are being groomed to eventually be effective leaders themselves. I use my instincts as my approach to understanding leadership. When determining if a person is a leader, I look for several qualities. If a person is leading by example, has the ability to encourage its followers to work effectively...

Leadership

...Successful leadership – how would you know? Boardrooms and business school classrooms are equally preoccupied with leadership, and success is often assumed to be about profit or Total Shareholder Return. It’s neither. For leaders wanting to measure their own success, for those who appoint leaders to know what they are aiming at and for outsiders assessing the quality of leadership, Andrew Likierman shows how to do it. Thinking W as Julius Caesar a successful leader? What about Ghenghis Khan? Simon Bolivar? Or Napoleon? Because we tend to think of these as military leaders, the answers look pretty straightforward. Each achieved major military successes. But then Napoleon was ultimately defeated – does that make him a failure? After all, he won a lot of battles before Waterloo, and his sweeping political and legal reforms have been the basis of French administrative life for nearly 200 years. Now let’s move to the politicians. How do you feel about describing Bill Clinton as a successful leader? George W. Bush? Tony Blair? Vladimir Putin? This is altogether more difficult ground. Some of you will have already decided; those of you who have not made up your minds could argue that it is too early to say. The historic verdict on Bush and Blair will probably depend on what happens to Iraq over the next 20 years. Those better informed about Russia than I am can make up their own minds about Putin. Moving next to business territory, with a few exceptions – say Bill Gates, Herb Kelleher...
