A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a highly qualified health professional, recognized as an expert in foods and nutrition. We as RDs have the instruments to succeed in this growing field. Working as foodservice managers was and still is common among dietitians, but in today’s work force there are many management opportunities for dietitians to practice in.1 In this paper, I will discuss several topics that relate to management skills in the dietetics profession. These topics will include current and future opportunities for dietitians in management, challenges for dietitians in management positions, career satisfaction of dietitians in management and how it can be enhanced, and how my own personal aspirations fit within these themes. These skills are important and matter a great deal especially when assuming the role of a manager. According to Gould and Canter, a manager must have a vast array of abilities such as strategic thinking, sound decision making for risky decisions, carrying out quality improvement, and finding innovative ways for cost containing measures.2,4 In order to make major changes within the dietetic profession an RD must not be afraid to assume major responsibilities in order to meet the needs of an organization. It is no doubt very important for an RD to assume risks, to learn from those risks, and to use that as a means to better themselves.4 Simply having management skills is not enough; an RD must be dedicated to their profession and be willing to accept the high levels of responsibility in order to reap the …show more content…
This is commonly very appealing to a lot of RDs; however, simply having more money does not always translate to career satisfaction. When a pole of 1,307 dietetic managers was taken on the topic of job satisfaction, the results were as follows: RDs filling the role of district managers were the most satisfied and those filling the roles of clinical nutrition managers were the least satisfied. The same pole also found that the RDs who received a higher salary were more likely to feel satisfied with their current job positions compared to those who were paid less but filling the same roles.5 Because of this disparity in wages, some of the lesser-paid RDs might become dissatisfied with their positions and leave the management role or the profession all together.
