Research Methods Assignment
In the field of political and international relations studies, there are two broad types of research methods, which include and combine various research methods, based on its designs and core principles, and they are quantitative and qualitative research methods. Also, there is the third one, called experimental research method, which does not fit into qualitative and quantitative methods, but rather constitutes separate research design, although it might be based on qualitative and quantitative methods’ tools and theories.
Quantitative research methods include many particular techniques and in general could be described as methods, which works with numbers and applies statistical analysis by using various mathematical operations with formulas and computer software. The usage of surveys and various types of databases are examples of quantitative methods. Scientists conduct surveys either in person, or through telephones, mail or internet to collect data concerning people’s opinion and attitudes about particular events in politics and international relations (Box-Steffensmeier, 2008, p. 9-10). Then, gathered information could be analyzed through the coding of data into numbers and application of tools of statistical analysis on them. Surveys allowed scientists to form databases from the collected data that made it possible to share databases with other scientists, especially with the emergence of internet, test theories or do further research in the field. Different historical records and events could also become a part of quantitative research methods, if it would be analyzed and various events would be assigned to different categories, based on their characteristics, that would eventually form a database for further statistical analysis. Militarized Interstate Disputes is a good example of such

Research Method Proposal Assignment

...Research Methods Assignment 1. The research question is whether exposure to sun and listening to familiar music affects a person’s mood. 2. The research hypothesis is that a person who is exposed to the sun and listens to familiar music would be in a better mood than a person not exposed to the sun and listens to unfamiliar music. 3. The population of interest for the research could theoretically include all group ages and their status in life. For the sake of the research, our sample would be students between ages 22-27 from 4 different universities (sample size of at least 60 people to get significant results). 4. We will divide our sample into 4 different groups Sun exposure + familiar music (group 1) | Sun exposure + non-familiar music (group 2) | No son exposure + familiar music (group 3) | No sun exposure + non-familiar music (group 4) | 5. The independent variables in this research are sun exposure and listening to familiar music. The dependent variable is the person’s mood. Sun exposure can be practically defined by determining a certain amount of time from which we can conclude that a person has been exposed to sun (i.e. 30 minutes). The definition for familiar music can be determined by a pilot before we begin our research on a population which is not part of the sample through which we can find out which songs are familiar (and conversely non-familiar). This way we can define practically and operationally which songs are familiar and which...

Research Approaches

...Research Approaches Two research approaches I would consider to use in my research method would be Interviews and Document reviews. Both of these I feel would show excellent results and shine light on my topic. Granted realistically for this assignment conducting Interviews is not possible but ideally I believe interviews would provide the best information and answers. Since I am limited my best bet for this assignment will be the Document studies strategy. First I want to hit on the Interview approach. According to this week’s reading assignment, “Overview of Qualitative Methods and Analytic Techniques. Common Qualitative Methods”, There are two different types of interviews. There is a structured interview, in which a carefully worded questionnaire is administered and an in-depth interview, in which the interviewer does not follow a rigid form. I would choose an In-depth interview and if it was possible I would interview individuals that work at the US Open Source Center. Much like Kimberly Dozier did in her article “Social media a growing part of foreign intelligence”. This method would fit perfectly into my research strategy by allowing me to ask questions I have and receive answers from key individuals in the intelligence community that actually utilize the information online that individuals post and would be able to give me firsthand knowledge on the matter. Now obviously this scenario would be a perfect world where issues of classified information and having access...

Each group must e-mail the names of its members and the chosen theme to Daphne van Kleef before 11th of February. 2. Each group member will be interviewed by another group member. Within each group, students will break into three pairs, and each pair will develop a unique research question (different from the other pairs in the group) related to the chosen research theme. The three pairs make one topic lists which covers all the topics that need to be discussed. Interviews will be conducted based on these topic lists. The result will be six interviews, one for each group member. The transcripts of these interviews should be included in the research reports as appendixes (these will not contribute towards the word count). To keep the interviews...

...Reflections on Individual Assignment 1 This document provides examples of student critiques prepared for individual assignment 1. I have selected examples of satisfactory and unsatisfactory critiques supplemented by some comments. Hopefully this will assist in preparing for the second individual assignment and the final exam. 1. Literature review (objectives and motives) Satisfactory critique Critique: Jones and Solomon (2010) do not explicitly mention the aim of their research, but rather refer to the nature of the research. This is not seen as a weak point as the authors make use of grounded theory in their study. The authors do however identify their motivation of conducting this research quite well by stating: “However, to our knowledge, there has been little research (...)” (pp. 21). Furthermore, the authors link their motives to prior research by stating that there has been a lack of interview-based work in prior research (Ball et al, 2000; Deegan et al, 2006; O’Dwyer and Owen, 2005). I do see this link as a strong point in contrast to the objective of this article. The objective of this article is not clearly formulated. The authors mention: “We address the fundamental question on (...)” (p.21). However, immediately afterwards they state: “In addition, we shed light on several important questions such as (...)” (p.21). These additions are not related to previously identified questions by the authors but to the themes that derived from the interviews in this study. Therefore...

It is a scientific process which aims to prove a theory (Business Dictionary, 2015). Within research there are different types; the main two being quantitative research and qualitative research. In basic terms qualitative is exploratory research and quantitative is a way to quantify an answer (Wyse, 2011). This essay will provide explanations of differences between the two methods. This will be done through a discussion of methodologies for both qualitative and quantitative research. The essay will discuss characteristics of both types of research including examples of types of methods and data collection, and analysis techniques used in each. An example of a research design project will be included to identify the benefits and limitations of one type; the author of this assignment has chosen to demonstrate a quantitative method of research. Qualitative research will be explored first. Bauman and Greenberg (1992) explain how qualitative research is used to find out what people think. It is an effective was to gather opinions and can be used to get people to talk...

The idea of the thesis project emanated from the business news the researcher often reads online in the Nigerian dailies as this spurred him to be interested in knowing why the Nigerian Insurance Sector is incessantly reducing in staff strength year in year out. Though, the he has had a little experience having worked a few months in the industry, but that is not enough to ascertain what the cause could be. Therefore, carrying out a research work on the frequent labour turnover in the Nigerian Insurance Companies and using the Nigerian Insurance Sector as a case study could be a perfect medium to discover what the causes are and how the posed challenges can be managed properly. Hence, professionals that had worked in the industry before and moved to other industries will be interrogated to derive facts and draw conclusions on what the industry can do to ameliorate this scourge of continuous labour turnover which is tantamount to affecting the level of productivity and generally bastardizing the image of the industry. ...Marketing Debate What Is the Best Type of Marketing Research? Many market researchers have their favorite research approaches or techniques, although different researchers often have different preferences. Some researchers maintain that the only way to really learn about consumers or brands is through in-depth, qualitative research. Others contend that the only legitimate and defensible form of marketing research uses quantitative measures. Take a position: The best marketing research is quantitative in nature versus The best marketing research is qualitative in nature. People are complex in their buying habits and purchase decision-making. Consumers do not always have the capacity to understand how they make the decision to purchase a good or service. As a result, good marketing research should dig into the consumers’ hidden motivations and influences. Good qualitative research may undercover hidden purchase agendas, hidden uses for the product, or hidden opportunities for new and undeveloped products. Due to the freedom afforded to both researchers in their probes and consumers in their responses, qualitative research can often be a useful step in exploring consumers’ brand and product perceptions. However, the drawbacks of quantitative research includes selection bias, response bias, and nonresponse. That is why quantitative research will always be criticized for shortcomings and results discounted. Although qualitative research has its own sets of disclaimers, it still closely...

Statistics

...have relied on the collection of data to make decisions that propel the human race into the next era of technical development and business growth. The type of data varies as it can either be quantified or qualitative to meet the needs and purpose of the research. The age old question has always been which of the two is the most preferred methodology, but the real question should be how both mirror the theme of statistics to provide the closest range to the point of accuracy while minimizing the margin of error. As we compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research methods, we will attempt to confirm which one is the better of the two, but how both apply the law of statistics to answer the research question with the highest level of accuracy. Qualitative research provides an in-depth analytical perspective on the data collected. “Unlike the case with quantitative data, both researcher and research sponsor often have more significant involvement in collecting and interpreting qualitative data”. (Schindler 2013, p.166) Qualitative research is more in tune with the emotional and personal data being collected for the study; a collection of person opinions in regards to the research conducted. “Qualitative research gathers information that is not in numerical form.  For example, diary accounts, open-ended questionnaires, unstructured interviews and unstructured observations”. (McLeod, 2008) Qualitative data requires expert...

Res 320 Week 2 Business Research Methods

...Week 2 Individual Assignment RES-320 Business Research Methods Question #2 - Define the distinctions between primary, secondary, and tertiary sources in a secondary search. Primary sources are original pieces of information. It is raw data without any input or hypothesis from outside sources. Secondary sources are interpretations of a primary data source, or anything that is derived from a primary source. Tertiary sources are in turn interpretations of any secondary resources, or any data that is derived from a secondary resource. Question #5 - Some researchers find that their sole sources are secondary data. Why might this be? Name some management questions for which secondary data sources are probably the only ones feasible. There are certain researchers who find secondary data as their sole source of data because; by using secondary data much of the original research has already been completed. Using secondary data is useful in saving time and resources while gathering information. It can also be the only source of information when the only primary information which exists is proprietary information which is not accessible to the public. Historical data can also play a factor if the data being researched is of historical nature, and there is not any original primary data that exists anymore. Question #7 - What problems of secondary data quality must researchers face? How can they deal with them? There can be multiple problems with secondary data quality...

Unit 10 - Describe the Different Types of Market Research - P1

...Describe the different types of market research (P1) In this assignment, I will be producing a report explaining and describing the different types of marketing research. What is market research? Market research is the process of collecting valuable information to help find out if there is a potential market for a new product or service. Market research is carried out in all areas of marketing activities and the information collected concerns customers, markets, responses to existing and planned marketing campaigns and the general business environment. This means that the process needs to be continuous so that trends, opportunities and threats are identified. There are two different types of market research, primary research and secondary research. Primary research Primary research consists of a collection of original primary data. There are advantages and disadvantages of primary research. There are various forms of primary research, which are: Observations Observations are a method of primary research where companies monitor customer behaviour. This can be in the form of a ‘mystery shopper’ in a store. Experimentation Experimentations are a method of primary research where an element of the marketing mix is changed. The results are then analysed. Surveys Face-to-face surveys; postal surveys; telephone surveys and email surveys are all different types of surveys used as methods of carrying out primary research. A face-to-face survey is two-way...
