“A cowboy lives in a world apart and has since the first herdsman climbed astride a horse, waved his hat and let out a yell, and chased down a stray”( McDowell 5). The cowboy was an American folk hero that many have portrayed like a modern knight, driven to conquer the wilderness and rescue people from evil. The film industry glamorized the cowboy’s life so much that they became known and loved in every community with a theater. The most significant qualities of the cowboy to the American people was their clothing, their real purpose, and abrupt demise.` In the decades after the Civil War and long before there were fenced ranches, ranchers would use the full open ranges of the western United States grasslands to allow their cattle to graze. Whether it was a herd of cows, horses, or goats, there was a propensity for these grazers to wander off into the wilderness. Therefore, a need arose creating an occupation whose title became known as the ‘cowboy’. The job description of this new found career was quite merely to herd cattle and prevent the animals from wandering astray or being devoured by predators. During the 19th century, 20 million cows were thrust into the infamous cattle drive headed to railheads and more extensive ranges to be sold for meat in order to help feed an expanding …show more content…
Many abandoned the profession altogether and became farmers due to this new world snatching the land for other uses other than herding cattle; primarily for expanding towns to meet an ever expanding population. More importantly, the expansion of the railroads, combined with the barbed-wire fencing of rangeland, effectuated cattle drives as unnecessary and

Reaction Paper - Nonfiction

...Reaction Paper - Nonfiction ENG/125 - Literature in Society Reaction Paper - Nonfiction In class this week our discussion was about nonfiction and some differences from fiction. Google dictionary (n.d.) states “nonfiction is prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography and history.” For our assignment this week we were asked to select two of the five nonfiction texts from our week four readings. After thoughtful consideration, I have chosen to write my reaction paper about “On Going Home,” by Joan Didion and “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone?” by Andrew Lam. In any form of writing the reader can find various literary elements such as plot, character, setting, theme, and point of view. Also when a writer writes they have a purpose in mind. The writers purpose might be to inform, persuade, or entertain their readers. The writer may also want to describe something to the reader. In both “On Going Home,” by Joan Didion and “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone?” by Andrew Lam I consider the theme to be the main element of both essays. In “On Going Home”, Didion’s theme is that of belonging and family. In Didion’s text, she makes use of three of the four main purposes of writing. Didion’s very first sentence is informing the reader as to why she is going home. The sentence reads “I am home for my daughter’s first birthday.” (Barnet, Burto, & Cain, 2014, 20111, 2007, 2005, 2003, p. 636) Didion...

Religious and Ethnic Diversity

...Religious and Ethnic Diversity Paper Ryan K Wehrsig, University of Phoenix I have chosen to write the religious part of this paper on the Roman Catholic religion. The Roman Catholic religion differs from other religions in many ways. The Church teaches that it is the one true Church divinely founded by Jesus Christ. They differ from a Christen religion even though they worship the same God. They have unique beliefs, practices, and traditions that set them apart from other Christians. Over the course of the centuries there has been many quarrels and hostilities between Catholics/Christians and Muslims. In the 1500’s the Roman Catholic Church did not tolerate any deviance from its teachings because they did not want to show a sign of weakness. The Roman Catholic religion has contributed a lot to the American culture. About 24 percent of Americans identify themselves as Catholic, making Catholicism the largest Christian denomination in America. One of the biggest religions we have here in our Country. Catholics faced a lot of discrimination and prejudice when they were first being introduced into the United States. Some states even tried to banning Catholicism. Even though the first amendment of the constitution granted freedom of religion a lot of Americans did not accept Catholic newcomers. From my research I have learned a lot about the catholic religion. It helped me to get to understand it a little more in the sense of now I know that they are part of the Christian religion...

...Family Cultural Research Paper Ashley Ziemann WITC New Richmond Family Cultural Research Paper In Switzerland, there were very wealthy land owners. They were known as the Wipfli family. I did not realize that they were from royalty, I had always just known them as the Wipfli’s. They lived in the Wipfli castle containing 30 rooms, which was wsurrounded by a wall and a moat, which is still owned and occupied by present members of the family. Inside the castle at each of the four corners of the castle, there was a large dungeon. All the walls were covered by murals. There was a circular marble stairway that wound its way up in the middle of the building. On the stairs were the Stations of the Cross. The castle is noted for its one-half mile tunnel which leads from the castle, under the river and comes out to the next village where there was a lake. The purpose of the tunnel was to provide an escape during World War 2. It also has a summer house way up in the mountains where the family lived during long hot summers. My cousin, Kathi, has a painting of the summer house over her dining room fireplace. One of the original family’s sons fell in love with Josephine Van Albert, of the family of Prince Albert (on the tobacco can). They married against her families objections which was possible because the Wipfli’s were wealthier than the Van Albert’s, and they moved from England to Switzerland. Charlotte’s father promptly disowned her, thereby cutting her off all claim our family...

The facts of the movie Tombstone are all just fictional because on real life all those facts are not the same as how they truly happened. The reason why the fact on the movie are all just fictional is because the history over the shooting on the ok corral says a lot difference facts. Especially that it is a movie they always try to change the things up a little bit so it can be interesting. Although there are some events in the movie that are factual. One of the event that is factual is that Ike Clanton was really unarmed. (http://www.historynet.com/ok-corral-a-gunfight-shrouded-in-mystery.htm). Another event that was factual was when Virgil Earp raised is hand and told the cowboys to raised their hand and to give him their arms.( http://www.historynet.com/ok-corral-a-gunfight-shrouded-in-mystery.htm). Another factual event is when frank told Holliday “I got you now” (http://www.historynet.com/ok-corral-a-gunfight-shrouded-in-mystery.htm). The other event that is factual is that in the movie shows that Wyatt Earp was the one who shoot the first. (http://www.bignosekates.info/history3.html). The event that I’m going to be contrasting is the ones that were not factual. The event that was not factual was that Billy Clanton was the first one to take his gun out. The Effects of Industrialization

...Assignment 1.2: Research Paper THE EFFECTS OF INDUSTRIALIZATION AFTER THE CIVIL WAR Renee Whaley History 105: Contemporary U.S History Professor Michael Dixon February 7, 2016 The Effects of Industrialization after the Civil War Introduction This paper will focus on the industrialization period that followed the civil war and the effects it had on the society, economy, and politics. This paper will also touch on three different groups affected by this period known as the industrial age. Finally, this paper will look at the daily life of an average working American and how it was affected by the industrial age. Society, Economics, and Politics The Industrial Age (better known as the Industrial Revolution) had an affect on nearly every aspect of the American life. This included its society, its economy, and its politics. From the north down on through the south and eventually to the west, society changed through the Industrial Revolution. The north saw more of an ideal lifestyle. Factories and a surplus of jobs created more opportunities for people and as a result, many began to move towards the north in search for a better lifestyle. As population grew, housing became a problem. Companies would build housing close to factories so its employees could walk to work but poor building codes saw companies taking advantage of this. Plumbing became obsolete, the water system became polluted, and diseases would often sweep through the tenements. In the south, the...

Argumentative Essay: Is Cheerleading A Sport?

...In today’s world many people see cheerleading as a squad of girls just prancing around with pom-poms and getting rowdy for a typical football team or a basketball game.  Another way people portray cheerleaders is the visual of the The Top Cats, Charger Girls and The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.  This is where the hairspray, make up and cleavage rules the field rather than the hardworking athletes many cheerleaders fight with their blood, sweat in tears, to be. There are two very different types of cheerleading. I will explain to few different aspects of the activity. In my opinion leads these are the most important reasons that prove why cheerleading should be considered a sport.  In this sport there is an outrageous level of athleticism. Cheerleading has many similarities that of other...
