...Personal Narrative- Track Competition The moment of truth was upon me. The official times, this includes whom qualified for finals, for the 400m relay had been posted. My eyes scanned the page for the bold letters that spell ANDERSON. As I ran my finger across the page to where the times were posted, my ears began to shut out all outside noises, leaving me alone with the thump of my heart and the inhale and exhale of my lungs. Both began to increase in speed as my eyes narrowed in on the time. My sophomore year had begun and I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to do track this year. Last year I played football in the fall and soccer in the spring. Not really enjoying it, the decision was made to play " real futbol" (soccer) in the fall, leaving the spring sports season open. My friend kept telling me how fun track was, so I decided to give it a try. As the first meet neared, things were going well. I made it onto the 4x100 team making me the third fastest kid on the team. The other members of the relay were Jason Schmidt, Jeremy Willard and Rodney Schmidt. Jason and Jeremy were both the top dogs and Rodney and I were second from the bottom of the barrel. The 400 relay was my best event. We placed in every meet and even took home some medals as the season progressed. As the track year rounded for the home stretch, we had only three more meets to compete in: the Tiger Invitational, regionals, and state. As the Tiger rolled around, there arose a question...

...Failing to Success It was tryout day. My heart was beating fast and sweat was running down my face as I approached the starting line. Wait. Stay still. Take a big breath. “Get set…RUN!” My adrenaline rush rose as I began to sprint. The sun was thrashing down my back as my feet pierced the burning, concrete track. With every stride I took, my lungs clasped for air. Everything felt the way it should as I was running at the same pace as everyone else. Half a mile through, I began to notice that most of the girls were about fifty meters ahead of me. They all had passed me. My short legs moved as fast as they could on the last two hundred meters left of the 5k but I just couldn’t catch up. As I came closer to my final steps, my legs were so worn out, that they began to wobble like a bridge in an earthquake. I reached the finish line and collapsed to the ground. This was my first year of high school and it was already not going well for me. I had failed to make the cross-country varsity team, which consisted of the top seven girls from a total of fifteen that had tried out. Mr. Nelson, the head cross-country coach, had decided to choose seven girls from those who hadn’t made varsity to run for junior varsity. Since there were eight girls, one would have to leave the team, so he eliminated me for having the slowest time. We all had viciously tried our hardest to earn a spot on the team by running against our teammates, but I just wasn’t good enough. I considered cross-country...

...question: Whether 'tis easier to race And face the harsh pains of a race Or to stay lazy And, by not moving, avoid pain To run, to hit the adrenaline rush- No more – and by running to say I face The early morning preparations for the events That each race day holds ‘Tis a situation I do not wish to face To run, to race- To fall perhaps too hard. Ay there’s the problem, For in running what events may come about When we are hiding from the finish line Must make us stop and think. That’s the idea That makes disaster of running For who really wants to face the 7 a.m. sun The first start, The runners’ obnoxious cheeriness, The disappointment in Gatorade, The team’s early practices, The overly chipper song of the early bird, And the cold looks That other runners send in my direction When they too may run On weekends free from tribulations? What would heed the team’s early call To sprint and jog through the first hours of the day But that the horror of something may be missed while running That unknown events that have occurred which The gossips discuss While we stand in a confused daze Wishing we had chosen a different sport Instead of seeking those futile adrenaline rushes? Thus the chance of missing out does make runners of us all And thus the bliss of running Is tainted by eye opening thoughts of lost news And peaceful moments of calmness and scenery With this regard their paths are cut short And lose the race in favor of the...

...success is clear, but complex because many people define success differently. The poor, the unpopular, and the popular people have their ways of being successful, while the rich have their own ways of being successful as well. People who are successful in life have a strong passion for their work. According to Oxford Dictionary, success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. In Tom Perrotta’s novel Election, the two main characters, Tracy Flick and Paul Warren, illustrate their differences in their motivation and work ethic when running for student body president. Tracy’s disadvantage makes it harder for her to run for student body president against Paul, who is privileged, for success. In order to be successful, Tracy has to be self-motivated. Motivation is defined as the act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something. In the beginning of chapter one, Tracy explains her qualifications when running for president. Her qualifications were listed as, “President of the Junior Class, Treasurer of the SGA, Assistant Editor of The Watchdog, statistician for the basketball team, and star of last year’s musical (Oklahoma!, in case you’re wondering) (Perrotta 8-9). Tracy’s achievements made her qualified to run for student body president as well as portrays her as a great academic student represent of her high school. From what she has achieved, Tracy shows that she is super-involved in school, which builds her motivation to participate in the campaign...

...Essay: Because It Is Running By Time marches on and never stops. Although things may die, it still continues. You can plan you life down to the smallest detail, but suddenly is can be changed by large or small things in life. When life stands still, should we run away from it or let it pass? This dilemma besides our main character, Wil, in Jo Lloyd’s short story “Because It Is Running By” from 2009. After his father lost his battle against cancer, his life has stood still for a while, until he realize that he has the options to change his life. In this essay I will characterize the main character, Will, focus on Jo Lloyd’s style of writing and the significance of the title. Wil is a young boy who lives with his mother. Together they run the “B&B”, which is a bed and breakfast place. He los his father to cancer and after that is their business gone downhill. Wil has given up trying to complete and education – instead he would help the family-business. After his father’s death to cancer, the business has stood still in a long time. It means a lot to Wil that the B&B only should be run on by family members: “He remembered that there has been a conversation. We can’t afford it, he has said. The B&B’s the only thing making money, his mother said. We just need weather, he has said, the veg’ll pick up” (p. 1, ll. 7-9) This shows, that Wil things a lot about the business and he thinks that only the weather, him and his mother could run the B&B back on track...

...and aware of the need for more physical activity, running has become a popular choice to both getting fit and staying fit. “3,103 MILES…AND BEN-GAY ALL THE WAY” was printed in 1981 to promote the use of Ben-Gay pain relieving ointment in running. I was drawn to the ad because of its feel good theme, and also because I am a novice runner myself. The ad is attempting to persuade the reader that Ben-Gay ointment is effective in minimizing the aches and pains associated with long distance running. In a high impact and demanding sport such as running, Ben-Gay will improve your conditioning and endurance. The ad will be evaluated for the use of Logos, Ethos and Pathos. The ad was effective in the provision of reason or logos by the use of the following text “As part of my warm-up routine, Ben-Gay helped me feel better for the long day ahead. And during my warm-down period, Ben-Gay soothed and relieved my tired, aching muscles. Ben-Gay made my whole run easier.” I found the logic of the argument presented in this text to be clear and compelling. I can identify with the ache in your body after a long run and so the idea of a pain relieving ointment is very reasonable. The ad was effective in the provision of credibility or ethos by the use of running icon Stan Cottrell. Mr. Cottrell was quoted directly saying that he used Ben-Gay throughout his long distance run. Mr. Cottrell set a new transcontinental running record after running for 48 days, through 14 states. The ad states that...

...I could not believe my eyes. I tried to close my eyes and opened them again, but the scenery in front did not seem to be changing. I stared in front with my eyes wide opened. There were a lot of trees, flowers and animals that I could not even call their names. Where was I? I remembered a few minutes ago I was having picnic with my friends beside the lake. And there was something in the lake, when I went over, someone pushed me by the back and I dropped into the lake. I looked behind. There was a lake behind me, but not the one we were having our picnic. Maybe I just accidentally traveled to another world? I smiled and shook these silly thoughts out of my head. This could not be possible. I thought maybe I was just reading too much comics to have this thoughts. This could not be real. The last conclusion I gave to myself was that this was only just a dream. I started to wander around wondering if there was anything I could do to go back home. I didn't know how far I had walked but I could not see the lake behind me anymore. The cold breeze kept me awake. When the wind blew, the smell of the fresh air mixed with the smell of the muddy soil and grass. I kept walking until I heard some noises. It was the voice of someone crying, a voice of a little kid. I walked towards the voice and finally I found a little kid sitting under the tree. He was shivering and there was a cut on his knees. Blood was dripping from his knees. I walked towards him. The second he saw me, he suddenly...

...Looking for shelter I arrived at night, when it was raining. The street was empty; there was not a carriage or light in site. Looking for some shelter I jumped down off my pure black horse and tied it up to the nearest tree and then I started to walk towards the black and rusty gate. I heard a thunder storm heading towards me, so I opened the gate in a hurry. As I did I heard a big long creek. I continued to walk down the muddy and wet path and I saw black crows circling the towers roof tops. I got to the old rotten door and knocked; there was no answer. So I pushed the ancient and rotten door and it swung open. I stepped in side. When I stepped in and a horrible stench came roaring down towards me, I called out “hello” and the only response was the echo of my voice. I started to walk towards the dining area, but on the way I heard a loud bang in a near by corridor. It sounded like something had fallen and smashed then I knew I was not alone. The corridor was completely dark so I collected some dry wood form a near by staircase that had collapsed for a torch, I used what I learnt on the farm to light it. I started to creep towards the corridor with my torch the in my hand, the entrance was made of stone and the half open door that was barely hang on to its hinges looked like it was staring right at me, but I pushed on. As I stepped into the corridor a shiver went down my spine, something was telling me that it wasn’t a good Idea. But something else was louring me in....
