Money, financial institutions, and financial markets have emerged as instruments of payments for the services of factors of production. As markets expand and develop on a national and international level, the importance of money, banking, and other financial markets expands to accommodate innumerable exchanges. This course will allow you to understand the origins and nature of money, as well as the institutions and markets that enable the exchange of goods and services. Moreover, it will help you develop an appreciation for important concepts in economics, from interest rates and central banking to stocks, bonds, and foreign exchange. Prerequisites ECON 2301 and ECON 2302. Textbook The Economics of Money, Banking & Financial Markets, Frederic S. Mishkin, 10th Edition. Pearson. Please note that to make things easier to remember for you, all quizzes are due on Fridays at 11:59 p.m., even during the Thanksgiving week and the last week of classes. However, quizzes will be available at least 5 days in advance and you are allowed to submit anytime during the week. This means that, for example, you can easily submit the Thanksgiving week quiz on Wednesday, Nov 26 so you are free on Thursday and Friday. Also note that in some of the weeks there are two quizzes (which are usually shorter chapters). Finally, week 1 is empty to allow some time for you to buy the book and get you familiar with Blackboard Learn and the class rules. Moreover, you have two weeks to submit quiz 2 just in case you had any delays in ordering the book. Of course, if you already have the book you can easily submit quiz 2 anytime after Sep 1.

Grading Structure There are 17 non-cumulative quizzes, one quiz after each of the chapters. The quizzes are either 12 or 14 points, please see the table above for the points of each of the quizzes. For every correct answer on the quizzes you obtain about 0.45% (100/222) towards your final grade. Hence, the quizzes account for 206 points of your grade (206 questions). The remaining 16 points come from two discussion boards (8 points each). The total number of potential points for the class is 222. No additional credit will be given. The cutoffs for the A-F grading system are given by: 199.80 (90.00%) – 222.00 (100.00%) 177.60 (80.00%) – 199.79 (89.99%) 155.40 (70.00%) – 177.59 (79.99%) 133.20 (60.00%) – 155.39(69.99%) Less than 133.20 (60.00%) Quizzes Because this is an online class, of course you can take the quizzes with anything that can help you (e.g., books, notes, calculator). You must have a valid University excuse in order to take a make-up quiz. You need to schedule your make-up quiz at the time you first know that you will not be taking the quiz. Beginning wrestlers will have a tendency to shuffle through their partner’s legs on their knees, because this is the easiest route. Don’t get into this habit.
