Tic tic tic... the chairlift can be the most suspenseful thing in the whole day. Riding a snowboard is like getting ready to ride a cheetah. The adrenaline of flying down an icy mountain at 35 mph is one of my favorite things; the whistling noise of zooming through the air, and jumping off these 10 foot jumps on a snowboard. Snowboarding is a blast.

Argumentative Essay: Snowboarding In Powder

...Snowboarding in Powder Why I Chose My Topic The snow was coming down wistfully, covering the freshly groomed trails. The snow blankets the side of the mountain making for an amazing powder day. Snowboarding has been a hobby of mine since seventh grade. On the mountain is a place where I feel free, especially on a powder day. Every day after the mountain closes, they groom the trails for the next day. Sometimes it snows overnight and this creates a powder day because the accumulating snow goes over the groomed trails. I've ridden powder two times since I have been snowboarding, and both times happened to be in Winter Park, Colorado. What I Already Know Not many people in my family snowboard, just my uncle Mike and my step mom’s sister Jamie....

X Games

...ESPN X Games: Commercialized Extreme Sports for the Masses SMGT 798 Allison Renard A Paper Presented to the faculty of Lasell College in Partial Fulfillment of the requirement of the Degree Master of Science in Management. ABSTRACT For years, extreme sports had little to nothing in common with each other except for high risk, and an appeal to women and men from the ages of 12 to 34. Entertainment Sports Programming Network (ESPN), realizing this age group was a prime viewing audience, brought together several extreme sports and created yet another commercialized sporting spectacle. Since 1995, this television network has produced the Summer X Games. After these summer productions proved to be successful television and live spectator events, ESPN expanded into the winter extreme sports. The Winter X Games have been produced since 1997. This paper, which commences with the rise of extreme sports, is an historical and sociological analysis of the creation and growth of the ESPN X Games. While these commercialized adventure and extreme sporting events have had some obvious growing pains, both the Summer and Winter X Games have grown into events, which annually attract thousands of spectators and viewers while offering fame and a few dollars to their participants. INTRODUCTION One need only take a quick glance at the daily news to discover that society in general is still in a state of constant change (Leonard, 1993). In the United States, this is especially true...

Liminality

...Liminality and Communitas as new sources of Social Capital in Business Relationship Dynamics Dr Annmarie Ryan, Department of Management and Marketing, Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick, Ireland. Competitive Paper Abstract In this paper I develop a framework for the study of business relationships through the lens of liminality. This is achieved by discussing the work of Turner in relation to rites and rituals and their role in society. Those dimensions of the concept of liminality and communitas that are important for this study therefore include: that it involves interaction outside everyday lived experience; that liminality is constructed and is neither self-evident or naturally occurring; involves the transformation re-discovery and re-appropriation of every day spaces, through separation, or divestiture process, and subsequently (re)incorporated into the everyday through processes of investiture and importantly, incorporates a shared experience that can impact on relations between those who share the experience beyond the event itself. The concept of liminality is offered as a way to enable researchers to understand the interactions between managers in relationships in a new way. The focus of this paper is therefore threefold: 1/ to expand upon the concept of creating, holding and intensifying liminal space and 2/consideration of the effect of this on the organisation and 3/ reflection on this on-going entering into and leaving of liminal space...
