...Students identified, defined the functions, and labeled the cell organelles for animal and plant cells their interactive notebooks. Next, students worked with their shoulder partner to read a cell city analogy (See Student Work Sample #1). Students answered an exit ticket on this section and took a formative quiz on the structure and functions of cell organelles. Transporting materials across the cell membrane to allow nutrients to enter and wastes to leave was the next topic. Students began by drawing a cell membrane in their notebooks labeling the lipid bilayer. A demonstration of hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties helped illustrate the arrangements of the phospholipids in the bilayer. Next a demonstration using balloons that contained different scents where the students guessed the scent introduced passive transport or diffusion. This led to a discussion on other types of passive transport (osmosis) and active transport. Cell environments and tonicity was introduced next to show how cells maintain balance. Students used a foldable for their notebook looking at the three different types of tonicity (hypertonic, isotonic or hypotonic) and how water will move across the cell (osmosis) to maintain equilibrium. A practice worksheet was given with sample problems of cells in different environments and students determined the type of tonicity and the direction of water movement.
