I'm pursuing a career involved with education, whether that be special education or school psychology, because I admire the active and positive role education has played in my entire life. Special Education is particularly intriguing to me since my brother has autism: he is highly functional, but him overcoming seemingly inevitable challenges inspire my interest in helping underdogs beat the odds.
In order to facilitate students in beating any odds, I would need to be an effective

Personal Statement: My Love For Special Education

...I always remember people asking me “what do you want to be when you grow up” and I always said the same thing. A teacher. Then I found my love for special education children, and from there I haven’t stopped loving them. I believe I found my passion thanks to my grandmother, she has worked with special education children for a number of years. I started volunteering at special olympics with her when I was about 11 years old and automatically had a connection with these children. I still try and volunteer with these kids as much as I can and participate in Circle of Friends here at AHS. As my grandma always says “it takes a special heart to work with special people, and you are that special person.” From then on I have found my love and passion...

My Special Education Philosophy

...SPECIAL EDUCATION - PHILOSOPHY My Special Education Philosophy S. Bruce Butrym Grand Canyon University: SPE 529N January 26TH, 2012 My Special Education Philosophy Philosophy…Webster defines that thought as, “a discipline comprising as a core logic, aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology.” With all due respect to Mr. Webster, combining the aforementioned subjects within a philosophical statement for one’s purpose in life may be the correct approach for ivy leagued institutions, but for an individual striving to reach high school age students within the Autistic Spectrum, in a TMD self-contained classroom; leaning ever so closely to a PMD format, a more down to earth approach would seem more appropriate. As such, after reviewing each of the core areas of philosophy, the subject of Metaphysics drew my attention. Defined in layman terms… Metaphysics allows me to, for one, to consider all I interact with within the schools four walls as “real beings”; and secondly, to consider those “real beings” as “genuine constituents” of the world that can hopefully can add additional strength to the makeup of that world. A major component to the development of my philosophy was to take advantage of the opportunity to interview a number of staff from my local high school; to review what these seasoned staff members had developed...

Special Needs Children

...Thompson Literature Review Special needs individuals are not different from everyone they just need a little extra help along their way. This population has to have mediation because there are many who cannot speak for themselves. They need the help from a neutral person so that they can discuss complications that they may be dealing with without judgment. Advocacy is a necessity too because that individual needs a person to stand by their side and help them fight for what is right. In todays society people only care about themselves. This hinders those that have special needs because they also need people to think about how a person with special needs can do the same task. Just because an individual has a special does not mean that they cannot do what everyone else can. Advocacy would come in at this point because they are there to be on that individuals’ side and help them. The Special Education Advocacy is located in New England. They state on their web page "I implore you to see with a child's eyes, to hear with a child's ears, and to listen with a child's heart" (Special Education Advocacy, 2009). This is a very powerful statement and draws individuals in because they want that personal experience that they are offering. For the mediation services that they offer it is stated that they have “unbiased mediation for families experiencing conflict due to family special needs responsibilities, resolution of guardianship agreements...

Personal Philosophical Statement

...Personal Philosophy of Special Education Grand Canyon University SPE-529N: Special Education Foundation and Frameworks Philosophy of Special Education I believe that as a special educator, I would like to create a classroom with quality content. As an educator, one should be considerate of the learner’s needs. If there is a teacher who only utilizes one teaching method, I believe that the teacher should not continue to educate children. I believe that no two students are the same. Like a seashell, no two students are alike. All children possess different gifts or learning styles, and I believe that all students are adept of learning anything that they put their minds to. I believe that the parent should be a major part of the students’ learning process. Learning is an adventure in which the teacher, child, and parent should take part of. I will create a structured environment for my students to succeed. Teachers should provide productive and structured environment in order for a student to experience academic success. If the students are not within a structured environment, they will not be able to succeed in learning. I believe that the classroom shall have classroom rules that would be effective throughout the whole year. The career of being a special education teacher is a lifelong process in which you learn new strategies, philosophies, and gain experience from students and parents. Because of this, I feel that I will always have an open mind and heart...

Resarch Proposal

...Statement of the Problem Teacher attrition has been a critical concern for the field of education for many years. An even more significant trend has been the teacher attrition rate of special educators. Over the years it has been a growing concern about the number of teachers who leave the classrooms in the high school that I work and in the school district in general. It is on this premise that I seek to find out the relationships of teacher retention and attrition in a collaborative classroom in five schools in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. Good – but no mention of special education? Introduction According to Boe, Bobbit and Cook (1993), teacher attrition is another term used for teacher turnover, which are changes in teacher status from year to year. Teacher turnover may include teachers leaving the profession, or teachers who change schools. Over the years, there have been issues concerning attrition and retention of teachers in the Chatham County district. Students with disabilities are at a disadvantage with the type of education they receive from teachers who are not qualified special education teachers, as well as general education teachers who are not coached or prepared to meet the individual needs of special education students. In the Savannah Chatham County School District, thousands of teachers have left the teaching profession for varying reasons. Some teachers leave because they have done many years of teaching and have reached the age...

Professionalism of Accounting

...decline and unethical posture of public accountants unveiled a decline in moral reasoning and ethical standards of public accountants (Dellaportas, 2006; Esmond-Kiger, 2004). Over the last few years, the accounting profession has been beaten up badly in the media, somewhat justifiably. The forces at work were numerous and complex and a variety of phenomena created the entire profession had its reputation tarnished. Some forces were not new: delivering services that acted to impair independence; becoming too cozy with clients, active participation in finding ways to circumvent accounting standards, and even simple greed. Legal Disabilities Law

...HISTORY OF SPECIAL EDUCATION LAW According to National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), an IEP, or Individualized Education Program, is “a written statement for each individual with a disability that is developed, reviewed, and revised in accordance with Title 42 U.S.C. Section 1414(d).” (NAEP Glossary) Each source I studied stressed the concept of “individualized” plans because each program is tailored to specifically meet the needs of that particular student through a series of assessments, meetings and medical diagnoses. Recognizing that the content of the IEP is legally binding, it’s important to ensure that what is included in the IEP safeguards the needs of the student and that the student needs are being met? So after Further research I discovered a site that put the definition of an IEP in easily understandable terms: [An IEP] is a legally binding document that spells out exactly what special education services your child will receive and why. So by doing the IEP not only would It will include the students classification, placement, services such as a one-on-one aide and therapies, academic and behavioral goals, a behavior plan if needed, percentage of time in regular education, and progress reports from teachers and therapists. What is and we see that these plans contain information about the child’s classification, such as autism, deaf-blindness, orthopedic impairment or mental retardation for example, which requires the special support while...

Philosophy of Beliefs

All experiences in schooling from the beginning will have positive and or negative impacts on the student that they will always carry with them. My role as their teacher is to make sure to the best of my ability that I will create a positive, supportive learning environment for all student’s in my classroom. One of the goals of education is to educate the student to become a functional participant in society. Education should also to provide the students with personal fulfillment of knowledge within their interests . A student is supported not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. I believe that my role as an educator is to support the diversity of all students by tailoring an education specific to the individual needs of the student. Every student in a diverse classroom has needs to be met on varying levels. One of my roles as a teacher is to identify a student’s specific needs and goals. Children at all levels need to be challenged, supported and validated. I will strive to build a solid support system for each student. To best support students, I will encorporate the parents and community into my classroom. I believe that education will benefit children the most when there is a healthy collaboration between the teacher, parents, and community. When there is open...

Special Needs Characteristics of Children with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders That Affect Inclusion in Regular Education

...of this report is to critique the research paper entitled “Special Needs Characteristics of Children with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders That Affect Inclusion in Regular Education”, by Stoutjesdik, Scholte, & Swaab (2012). The aim of the research paper is to determine the special needs characteristics of children with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) that predict the placement of these children in restrictive school settings. The researchers point out that children with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) are often placed in the most restrictive educational settings, despite various countries’ aim to place all children in the least restrictive settings possible, based on the Salamanca Statement (1994). This is due to the fact that EBDs are considered the most challenging disabilities to be catered for in regular education settings. The researchers argue that there are differences in the characteristics between children with EBD that are educated in special education schools and those educated in inclusive education schools. It is argued that these differences play a significant role in the decision as to where a child with EBD is placed and the study seeks to answer two research questions: determination of the differences in characteristics between children with EBD placed in the two different settings, and determination of the the difference that contribute most to placement in restrictive education settings. The researchers mention previous studies that have...
