Animals: Young adult male Sprague Dawley rats (Harlan Laboratories, Madison, WI, USA), were used for these experiments. The rats weighed between 250 to 300 g at the start of the experiments. Rats were individually housed in ventilated polycarbonate Animal Care System Cages in a temperature and humidity controlled room on a 12:12 light:dark cycle with ad libitum food and water access, unless otherwise noted. All protocols and procedures were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at Georgia State University and conformed to the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

Each chamber had a metal bar floor, with two retractable levers with a round white stimulus light above each. In the middle of the levers is the food receptacle which delivers a 20mg sucrose pellet (Bio-Serv, Frenchtown, NJ) with presses on the active lever. The first group contained 10 rats, but due to technical issues, the SHU9119 was inactive and did not work in this group of rats. This was assessed by the failure of SHU9119 to increase 24-hour home cage food intake in these rats. The second group of rats started with 9 rats, and one rat had to be euthanized prior to the end of the study. A third group was added to strengthen the statistical power for this experiment. The third group of rats started with 6 rats and no rats were euthanized before the end of this study. Due to experimenter error, the 100 pmol/side dose was not tested in this group of rats. Recalling that pregnancy maintenance is dependent upon progesterone produced from the corpus luteum (CL), and because the CL requires a different cascade of hormones for each stage of gestation, the aforementioned findings are logical (Narotsky et al., 2000).
