...Part I The founding of Singapore is a journey which is comprised of many ups and downs. Many characters and groups played a part into the creation of this country. There were also events that took place which led to the alteration of other’s decisions. One of the major factors that contributed to the founding of Singapore would undoubtedly be the contributions and efforts put in by Sir Stamford Raffles. “In 1795, at the age of 14, Raffles found employment at the British East India Company (EIC) in Leadenhall Street as a temporary clerk.” As an employee of the EIC, Raffles’ performance was exceptionally good. With his efforts and hard work recognised by his superiors, he was eventually appointed as Assistant Secretary to the newly-established Pinang Presidency in 1805. Being an intelligent and ambitious person with great diplomatic skills, Raffles had a personal desire to expand the British trade empire through the development of the EIC. Therefore, competing with the Dutch to gain the upper hand of the trade in the Eastern Seas was a crucial stepping stone towards his goals. He recognised that gaining control over the Straits of Melaka would be essential to boost their trading activities and the overall reputation of the British Empire as a world-leading trading nation. Hence, he frequently initiated “attempts to counter Dutch influence in Sumatra and expand British presence elsewhere in the Eastern Seas”. However, the well-intentioned Raffles faced opposition from carrying...

...The Customary Malay laws are an important source used in studying the system of governance, the administrative system and the structure of the traditional Malay society. These customary Malay laws also gives an insight into the world view of the traditional Malays. From the proverbs “to pound in the mortar”, “to cook in the pot”, we know that the Malays are particular about the need to do things appropriately. And from “On the land where our feet are planted, above is the sky that we pledge our loyalty to; the place of our abode, is the custom we abide by”, we can deduce that the Malays are a people who can and are adept at adjusting to the situation and to the changes over time. Sir Stamford Raffles was the first person to grasp the importance of studying the customary Malay laws. While he was in Penang, Raffles started to collect copies of the manuscripts of the Malay laws. He rejected the view that the Malays do not have laws. On the contrary, he stated that each and every Malay state had their own laws. In his letter to Lord Minto, he had asked Lord Minto to require that all the Malay state/government furnish their own set of laws (Lady Raffles, 1835:100). In the meantime, he busied himself studying the Malay laws. As a result, a working paper was presented at a convention of the Bengal Royal Asiatic Society. The working paper was titled “on the Malay Nation, with a translation of its Maritime Institutions” and was published in the Asiatic Researches (Volume 12, 1818). ...

...Describe A Place You Have Visited I had waited for 2 years to see the ‘Hall’ and when I arrived in Singapore, I was among the first to see it. In my mind, it gives me lots of different imagination. If you walk along the Padang you will not miss this significant and magnificent building which stands facing the Esplanade. When I look carefully, I had noticed that there were very few buildings built in that design anywhere else in Singapore. When you walked a couple of hundred meters from where Sir Stamford Raffles landed, at the Singapore River, you will able to catch a glance on this historical building. It was surrounded with all the important government buildings of the old Singapore, such as the Supreme Court and Parliament House. It overlooks the historical Padang, the location for many important event to be hold – like the National Day Parades. This historical building had impressed me a lot. It was the seat of the British Government of Singapore and in the earlier times was the centre of government. It had been an important building where the Prime Minister’s office also housed in this building. There were several milestones events had been carried out within this building including the matter of Japanese surrendered to the British in 1946. Moreover, most of the important announcements with regard to the country were made from the building. The physical structure of the building was made up of solid granite and similar like most of the old buildings, is able to withstand...

Economy Situation in WW2: The economy of Singapore had hit a major blow in 1946 as there were shortages of food (especially rice) that led to malnutrition, diseases and rampant crimes and violence. This led well into 1947 as workers went onto a series of strikes causing massive stoppages in public services and transport. By the late 1947, the economy had begun to recover due to the growing demand of rubber and tin around the world. But it took several more years before the economy was back to pre-war levels...

...Norman Papers The Battle Of Hastings The background to the battle was the death of the childless King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, which set up a succession struggle between several claimants to his throne. Harold was crowned king shortly after Edward's death, but faced invasions by William, his own brother Tostig and the Norwegian King Harald Hardrada (Harold III of Norway). Hardrada and Tostig defeated a hastily gathered army of Englishmen at the Battle of Fulford on 20 September 1066, and were in turn defeated by Harold at the Battle of Stamford Bridge five days later. The deaths of Tostig and Hardrada at Stamford left William as Harold's only serious opponent. While Harold and his forces were recovering from Stamford, William landed his invasion forces in the south of England at Pevensey on 28 September 1066 and established a beachhead for his conquest of the kingdom. Harold was forced to march south swiftly, gathering forces as he went. The exact numbers present at the battle are unknown; estimates are around 10,000 for William and about 7,000 for Harold. The composition of the forces is clearer; the English army was composed almost entirely of infantry and had few archers, whereas only about half of the invading force was infantry, the rest split equally between cavalry and archers. Harold appears to have tried to surprise William, but scouts found his army and reported its arrival to William, who marched from Hastings to the battlefield to confront...

The Witan (a council of wise men) had to make the decision, and they had four candidates to choose from Edgar the Atheling, a sickly14 year old boy. Harald Hardrada, King of Norway and a direct descendant of the kings of England. He was related to King Canute, the King of England from 1016-1032. Harald Hardrada attempted to invade England, and once Harold Godwinson heard about this he gathered as many soldiers as he could and set off 187 miles north to where Harald Hardrada was at Stamford bridge. On September 25th 1066 the battle took place, It was a bloody battle and one in which Harold's army (the Saxons) broke through the Viking invaders front line to go on and win the battle. It was such a fierce battle that only twenty four of the three hundred ships, that came to England carry the 8,000 soldiers, returned to Norway. King Harold's celebrations of victory were cut short as news came of the impending Norman invasion and no-one was left along the south coast of England to stop them. The Saxon army raced back south to face the Norman invaders. William laid claim to the English throne after Edward died. ...The Battle Of Hastings The Battle of Hastings was a historic event that occurred on October 14, 1066 during the Norman Conquest of England (Hollister, Stacey, Stacey 126) . The battle was between the Norman-French army that was led by Duke William II of Normandy and the English army under King Harold II because they both believed that they were to succeed King Edward, the late king (Esteves 5-9). The Battle of Hastings is significant because it led to changes in “English law, language, and culture and laid the groundwork for the beginnings of the English feudal system”(Ericson par.1) It was significant because this war ended the Anglo-Saxon period that lasted about 600 years, and really established England is an independent power, under Norman Rule. It was the last time that England was ruled by a foreign power. When King Edward died, William and Harold both had reasons to why they thought they were next in line to take the throne (Esteves 5-9). William, who was the Duke of Normandy, was a cousin of Edward, who was the King of England. Edward died without children in the year of 1066 and supposedly named Harold his heir in the year of 1051(Hollister, Stacey, Stacey 118). The throne was then given to Harold Godwinson, but William claimed that before his death, Edward had promised him that he would be appointed the throne. William considered Harold’s crowning a declaration of war, and planned to fight for the throne that he thought was his. (Hollister, Stacey, Stacey 118,119)...

...Hastings were key in regards to Harold Godwinson, as well as the strength of Williams army. Harold's leadership was tested throughout 1066, but it's safe to say that in the early months of his reign, he did show strong leadership and led his men well. There is further evidence to show that Harold was a good leader at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. This battle begun because Harold Hardrada and Tostig landed with over 8000 Norwegians in the North of England, taking over York and declaring Harold Hardrada as King of England. On hearing of the invasion, Harold Godwinson, quickly gathered what men he could, the majority not being trained soldiers, and marched nearly 200 miles north to face him. The two armies met at Stamford Bridge, hence the name, and commenced into battle, Godwinsons men won the battle killing both Harold Hardrada and Tostig in the process. The Battle of Stamford Bridge shows Harold Godwinsons successful leadership as he managed quickly to gather troops and fight the invading army making it one of the most impressive victories for any Anglo-Saxon King. Harold Godwinsons poor leadership was demonstrated straight after the Battle of Stamford Bridge took place. Harold had heard about the Norman invasion on the south coast, and immediately sent his exhausted troops back marching down south which arrived on October 6th 1066. But this decision to send his troops back down south ended up with only those on...

...In today’s society, we don’t hear cases about monsters scaring children and transforming into heroes. Monsters that turn into heroes come off as rare in the fiction world where most people only see one side of a monster. Two works that suggest monsters becoming heroes are The Cat in the Hat and Monsters Inc. At first, these monsters come about as scary looking but that’s not how these selctions end up; finishing with a twist in the end with monsters showing a care for human children. While written 40 years apart, Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat and Pete Docter’s film Monsters Inc. demonstrate responsible behavior in interactions with children and show the flawed characters who though their journey have monster heroes who interact with human children and then accept responsibility for the messes they have created. The Cat in the Hat and Monsters Inc. portray a child’s adventure as a result of showing up unexpectedly. The Cat enters out of the blue introducing himself to the two children and begins creating chaos around the house because he’s being a careless cat. The Cat unlocks a crate and frees the two identical creatures with blue hair who rally round the Cat...
