Executive Summary:
Apple Inc, is an American multinational organization which deals in manufacturing, designing and marketing computers, computer software and different consumer electronics. The company has been listed in NASDAQ exchange under ‘AAPL’ ticker symbol. The company is headed by Mr. Bill Campbell. The present CEO of Apple Inc. is Mr. Steve Jobs, who has a strong focus on innovation.
The company works strongly on innovation and technology, so as to have a competitive edge in the market, with a strong focus on innovation, the company is able to makes differentiated products which makes Apple Inc. one of the most successful company.
Company overview:
‘Apple Inc, is one of the biggest manufacturer of personal PC’s , mobile communication devices and portable music and video players. The Company’s products and services include the Mac line of desktop and portable computers, iPhone, the iPod line of portable digital music and video players, Apple TV, Xserve, a portfolio of consumer and professional software applications, the Mac OS X operating system, third-party digital content and applications through the iTunes Store, and a variety of accessory, service and support offerings. The Company sells its products worldwide through its online stores, its retail stores, its direct sales force, and third-party wholesalers, retailers, and value-added resellers. In addition, the Company sells a variety of third-party Mac, iPhone and iPod compatible products, including application software, printers, storage devices, speakers, headphones, and various other accessories and peripherals through its online and retail stores. The Company sells to consumer, small and mid-sized business (“SMB”), education, enterprise, government, and creative markets.’(Apple, Annual report, 2010).

Competitor Analysis:
Apple Inc. works under high competitive environment, some of the major competitors of Apple Inc. in personal computer segment are Dell, Compaq, Toshiba and Sony. Many companies are coming up with innovative digital music players or consumer electronics who are giving tough competition to Apple Inc, main being Sony, creative, iriver, nokia, sony etc. Apple Inc. owns 10.6% of market share of personal computer segment in the US market. Dell has 23.1% market share whereas HP has 24.3% market share. Acer and Toshiba are placed at fifth place in the personal computer segment.
Financial performance:
Presently, the shares of the company are traded at $320.29 as on 14th December’ 2010. The company has been able to increase the value of its share prices in last six years. The financial health has also improved in last few years. the company’s 52 week high share price is 299.0 and lowest has been 185.55.
The revenues of the firm has increased by 74.56% in last two years and an increase of 135.6% in net income of the company. In last three years the company has improved its financial performance and has been able to get placed in top 500 fortune company of the world.

Strengths:
* Strong management: Apple is a brand known to the world, with its strong management capabilities, the firm has been successful in making its place globally. The company has formulated the strategies which revolve around commitment, innovation, focus and technology. Thus the company’s strong management capabilities is one of the strength of the company * Innovation: Apple being a technological company is focused on innovation. * Brand recognition and image: Apple’ logo is recognized worldwide. With its strong brand image and innovation it perceives strong value * Diversity in the product range: Apple has successfully diversified its product portfolio from PC’s to music system to iphones. Wide range of differentiated products are available in the market. * Strong control over supply chain: The supply chain of the company works on strict disciplinary chain. As company believes that ready availability of the products to consumers is one of the most important aspects for success. Thus, the company pursues strong supply chain so as to have fast and ready availability of its products in the market. * Strong and loyal customers: The company focuses on building loyalty of customers. Through differentiated products, innovation and style the company builds loyal customers. The company focuses on gives added value to its customers to build a strong base. The company also associates different athletes with its brand so as to build a connection with its customers. * Strong Innovation: Innovation is one of the building blocks of the company on which the company moves. The company innovates in designing its products through different technologies. * Strong Financial Position: The Company has been successful in attaining a place in Forbes 500 magazine in America as well as globally. The company follows strict control over its debts. The company’s profits are increasing yearly despite of the economic crisis, which shows the strong financial and business strategy that the company follows. The company focuses on performance by improving its profitability. * High sales of Ipad and other products of Apple - The Company sold 8.4 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 61 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.41 million iPods during the quarter (3rd quarter, 2010), representing an eight percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company began selling iPads during the quarter, with total sales of 3.27 million.(Third quarter result, Apple investor)
Weakness:
* Price: High prices of products of Apple Inc. * Specific interface: Apple only operates on Mac * Defects in Apple Nano: Apple Nano was reported as having a faulty screen * Weak relation with Microsoft and intel * Market Share: Despite of the innovative products, Apple is not able to gain much market share. * Slow turnaround n high priced products of Apple Inc.
Opportunities:
* Globalization: The Company today is operating in more different countries, having its products marketed worldwide in different stores. * With the increasing globalization and technological advancement, customers prefer shopping online – Globalization and the changing preferences of people have opened the scope of online shopping, with the increase in demand of online shopping Amazon.com and E-bay have made a distinguished space in E-commerce. Apple should utilize this opportunity so as to increase its customer base. * Expansion of E-commerce globally – Apple should focus on expanding its E-commerce base to Canada, China and other countries where it is operating. Online shopping is being demanded worldwide. Consumers prefer to buy products online. Expansion of ecommerce to other markets will help in expanding the customer base and profitability of the company. * Growth and increasing demand of Laptops –With the increasing globalization, technological development, people are becoming technological savvy. Today, consumers are moving towards laptops because of its convenience, and flexibility. * Expansion of product line: Apple Inc, should try to increase its product line in computer and music and media market.
Threats:
* Economic or subprime crisis around the world has affected the business – With the economic meltdown, the income of customers have decreased considerably will has lead to decrease in demand of products. * Increase in the price of providing technological solutions (e-commerce) – With the advancement and increase in the use of ecommerce, the prices of ecommerce are touching the sky. * Increasing competition from the competitors * Challenges in the global trade and different trade policies and duties levied on export and import of products. There are several duties and taxes which are levied on the products of Apple, which increases the price of the products. * Increase in the Price of Raw materials – With the hike in oil prices and inflation has led to increase in price of raw materials. With the increase in the price of raw material the price of production and product tends to increase which may result in reduction of the demand of the products. * Fluctuation in foreign currency and transactions – As Apple operates globally, the fluctuation in currency can affect the profitability and the price of the products of Apple.
Conclusion:
Apple Inc. is one of the most important technological driven company which has a strong focus on innovation. Below are listed few recommendations which will help in increasing the market share of the company, * The Company should have a focused investment on Research and development as that plays a very important role in the growth and development of the company. It will help in gaining competitive edge. * The company should focus on the design of its products. * The company should focus on building a strong value chain so as cater to the market promptly. * SPACE Matrix: Despite of the differentiated products and the rapid growth of the market, the company still sets back in the market share. So, the company should focus on aggressive strategy so as to increase its market share. * Apple should focus on strong mergers and acquisitions vertically as well as horizontally, so as to increase in market share and growth. * Apple should also launch different products at low price, so as to attract more customers. * Continuous innovation and development of its products must be followed by Apple Inc.
Expansion of E-commerce globally – Apple should focus on expanding its E-commerce base to Canada, China and other countries where it is operating. Online shopping is being demanded worldwide. Consumers prefer to buy products online. Expansion of ecommerce to other markets will help in expanding the customer base and profitability of the company.
