“‘What the hell is water?’”(Wallace 480). The obvious reality is we do not see what we are used to living in. The fact is our perception and path we choose in life becomes our reality. Expanding horizons in all forms of knowledge is beneficial, yet today’s traditional education system funnels money towards STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and mathematics) programs. As a result, humanities based subjects lose money which means less opportunity of growth in art and other creative outlets at a younger age. Now, for the young adult choosing a career path, there are two broad based options- STEM or Humanities. Even though many believe STEM provides innovation and job growth, a degree in humanities promotes insight to the minds of a person through …show more content…
What do you say to the child who excels in art and history, but is horrible at math and science? Today the response is: good luck kid. To crush the dreams of a child is to stunt growth in creativity. Career options could be: consulting, nonprofit work, history and restoration, teaching, proposal manager, content strategist, communications director and many more. Each of these careers provides the soul to analyze an issue and solve it. People already established in a career can benefit too. In “Why I teach Plato to Plumbers” by Scott Samuelson, he talks about the different career paths of the people he has taught throughout multiple college courses. The majority of Samuelson’s students have fallen in love with different studies of philosophy that they otherwise would not have known(474). The individual could be a nurse, business investor or farmer and each pupil has fanned the same spark for free thought. Free thought meaning any and all theories a philosopher may give as insight to life. Humanities is a form of knowledge is for the consumption of all at any time. The only bias is the one society makes. Lastly, it does not matter what or who an individual is, anyone can learn and become better educated on humanity as a whole because of the field of …show more content…
Free thought is about innovation and growth. Humanities teaches the individual to find a problem and sort out if the solution is actually a full resolution. For example, a teacher will give a lecture in class and will eventually test the students on what they learned. Unfortunately, there is more than one way to test knowledge. For example, Brody Howard examined assessments in higher education and believes, “The wrong sorts of evaluation tools focus solely on the instrumental value and ignore the intrinsic value, threatening the future of the humanities in higher education”. The disconnect happens when humanities is analyzed through the scope of a STEM lens which has a different perspective on how society and individuals should function. Humanities builds the individual and gives them a base to use for STEM and analyze the data it produces for new technological advancements. The iPhone a primarily recent advancement, could not have been found without finding the gap in how humans connect. Steve Jobs, a college dropout, studied physics along with poetry and literature, I believe there would be no phone that is as user friendly as iPhone if it were not for the humanities based classes he took. Furthermore, just another person's life can be a form of a lesson that STEM can not explain.
