...Teaching Our Kids Personal Responsibility Scott McMillan GEN200 July 30, 2012 Richard Guliuzza Teaching Our Kids Personal Responsibility The web definition of “responsibility” says this: 1. The state or fact of having a duty to deal with something; 2. The state or fact of being accountable or to blame for something. I think the foundation of Personal Responsibility is how well you take care of yourself and others. This is physically and mentally. It all starts with what your parents taught you and the kind of values that were instilled in your home. As new parents we are constantly learning about our kids. One of the things I learned early on when my kids were learning to talk was to watch what I say. I don’t usually swear but I’ve been known to say things like “crap” or “bastard” around the house. I can’t stress enough to watch what you say. Patience is a virtue, but it doesn’t come easy sometimes. I truly believe that kids will follow their parents lead most of the time, especially when it comes to how they handle various situations. We need to be the examples as parents. Our kids look up to us and will take on either the good habits from us or the bad ones. Don’t let them latch on to the bad ones. Of course there are many advantages of teaching kids personal responsibility while they are young. One would be it gives them purpose. Purpose builds confidence, which in turn is the foundation for socializing and making friends as they get older. Start them...

...the story “The Lesson” by Toni Bambara , you first read it and get the basic idea. After analyzing the text I believe that the story is talking not only about poverty but also showing that education is important. It shows the kids in the story that you can make a change in your life. They are not socially equal with the other rich white people but can change that thought the course of their life. The kids teacher, Miss Moore, is a college educated black woman. She always makes the kids do things they do not enjoy and the do not like her much. The true fact of why they do not like her is because she makes them come with her even in summer when school is supposed to be out. She is just trying to teach the kids and takes it as her responsibility to educate the young ones. Her first lesson of the day was teaching was about money. She asks if they knew what it was. They thought she was calling them dumb for asking them what money was but she was really foreshadowing for her lesson she was teaching them that day. In the taxi Miss Moore gives Silvia a $5 bill and wants them to figure out 10% tip for the cab driver. The get to where there going and they are not sure so they give him a dime. They figured they needed it more than the Satterfield 2 taxi driver does. This was one of the first mentioning of these young kids being poor and in poverty. They knew that it cost a lot to buy their family needs and their family did not...

...and teaching other kids about sports. I think sports are a great thing to know about because you can play them with your friends, and they keep you active. Ever since I was a kid, I have loved sports. I have heard people say I used to try to shoot a basketball, when the ball was bigger than me. I currently play 3 sports for school. Those sports are basketball, softball, and track. Another reason I want to be a PE teacher is so I can coach. I figured PE would be the best thing for me to teach, since I love sports. I also love playing with kids, so that won’t be a problem. My mom teaches 9th grade, so I have seen how some kids act at that age, and I don’t think that will be a problem. A high school PE teacher has a lot of different responsibilities and requirements. Some of those responsibilities are planning and delivering lessons, assessing performance where it is needed, and instructing and looking for improvement in students(Firth and Media). Also, they have the possibility of coaching sports and helping with the intramural programs(Firth and Media). I think if you are a PE coach you should have to help coach because you just play with kids the entire day, and you most likely will like sports. A high...

...swim lesson at the Hot Pot is a model for how her parents may come off as cruel, but they also have a genuine care for their children. Although Jeannette sees her Dad’s swimming lessons as cruel, underneath the brutality of the swim lesson Rex has a genuine care for her. Jeannette thinks that Rex’s teaching style about swimming is harsh. After Jeannette sank for the first time Rex pulled her to the side. Rex “picked her up and heaved [her]”(66) back into the middle of the Hot Pot. Jeannette thought this is mean because Rex is just throwing her into the middle of the Hot Pot and expecting her to learn how to swim on her own. Although Jeannette thought that her dad was brutal, she kept reaching out to him for help because she needed him for help. Rex “pulled [his hands] back”(66) when Jeannette reached out...

...and their rules Kids are meant to enjoy their childhood and play around and have fun. Parents only want the best for their children, but it’s their children’s education that always come first. There are always controversies and arguments about which schooling benefits the student’s learning the most. Most kids are put into public schools because it doesn’t require much money unlike homeschooling or private school. Many families struggle with poverty so public schools are the only options left for them. Money isn’t the only problem that people are facing, but whether or not the students are learning going to school. Does the different type of schools really determine how much the students learn? What are the pros and cons of public schools, private schools and homeschooling? What type of school is the ‘right’ school? According to the Institute of Education Sciences, folks reported having state funded school decision, more or less 25 percent went to a picked government funded school, while 67 percent went to their allocated school while the other 9 percent went to a non-public school. When it comes to how much the students are learning, is the school really the most important factor? Parents are the ones who mainly makes the decision in what schools are better for their child. Usually, private schools are mainly for religious purpose. They are quite strict, but I have Ngo 2 read articles in the newspaper that they have a better teaching system compared to public...

...to be washed, and cook the meal, housework make them becomes angry, crumpy and tired. Laura (2012) estimated that parents seem to put too much responsibility on teaching and looking after their kids on the schools. Moms and Dads nowadays are too busy to take a rest and feel pressure on how to balance everything in life. While the busy parents put all their trust on the helps of school, unluckily, some of those schools just formed as the unethical business with the profit on their top of their cores element. Evidence showed on the Global Times (2012) that one kindergarten teacher in China ordered her students to beat up one six-year-old girl in the class to “teach” her how to keep silent in class. The articles detailed the story as the teacher asked the class of 32 students to line up and hit the girl ten times each. Moreover, there is the situation that school manage to keep additional children which is over the standard of students cap per in the classroom (Spencer 2012). The size of class becomes lack of space and conditions for kids to grow and study just because of the profits. The schools ignored the policy and it leads to the fact that with many children under just one or two teachers who can not have capacity to put eyes on every kids. Some parents think that if they spend lots of money to put their children in the expensive kindergarten or private...

...satisfy you as a career and as a passion? Luis had a passion for teaching ever since he was in high school teaching crafts to 10 year old kids. “He decided to go into teaching nine years ago, between his sophomore and junior years in high school”(Integ, pg 64). Luis was raised in the largest city of the state, where he has deep roots with friends and family. For half a year he had felt like a slave as a paralegal in a large law firm, and another half year as a junior executive has only made him realize his desire to become a teacher. Finally after completing his B.A and receiving his teaching credentials, he decided to apply for a part time substitute teaching position until something came up. Soon because of the many retirements and the good impression he had earned with the school where he worked, they offered him a full-time teaching job. However, Sunset National Bank, a place where he applied, is offering him a job over 15 other candidates, “Sunset National Bank has chosen him over 15 other candidates for the trainee position because of his excellent academic background, fine references from his previous jobs, and outstanding interview” (Integ pg, 64) . This opportunity would give him a slighter better paying salary, starting at $38,000 a year. In addition to his pay at the bank, where he’ll be promoted to loan officer, he will be receiving an additional $3,000 raise. Luis is now stuck in a position where teaching is the dream job he has wanted since High School, but he has also...

...a quarter of a lifetime’s worth of debt (Bidwell). Colleges should lower their tuition so kids from lower income families can send their kids to college, it would create more jobs, and they could make a larger profit. If the price of college tuition decreased, kids from lower income families would be able to afford to go to college. The price of tuition has doubled within the past 20 years but the average income per household has only rose about 20% (Lapovsky). Many families choose not to send their kids to college because they cannot afford it. Many kids are smart enough to go but are not able to because of the cost. Some people say that colleges lower their tuition and help out lower income families significantly. Colleges only give out a certain amount of financial aid. If the parents of...

...A Position Against Standardized Testing I am a mother of two elementary school age kids, Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) board member, and actively involved in my children’s education. I have often asked why there is so much emphasis on standardized tests. Growing up, we took standardized tests but there was no real preparation work or stress over the test. We didn’t even know until the week prior that we had testing coming up. Back then teachers taught and engaged their students in learning all subjects because they loved teaching. We learned not only what was minimally acceptable to pass a standardized test, but much more beyond the testing requirements. I am very interested about high stake standardized testing in our public school system because it seems my children’s curriculum is solely based on concepts they need to learn to pass their standardized test. Rather than teaching to our children who are eager to learn how to be higher-level thinkers, we seem to be teaching them to accept a minimal standard and simply learn how to pass a test. Today, I see our children being given pretests and benchmark tests to see how well they will do on the standardized test. I witness teachers under pressure to make sure they get the curriculum in prior to the test and students being drilled repeatedly for the standardized tests. Our children come home stressed and concerned because in some states, these tests can determine if you are from moving to the next grade level,...

...Teach Your Kids Parents in modern day society love to scream about what people can and can't teach their children. After all, children are highly impressionable, and monitoring what one's kids see and hear is a crucial part of being a parent. It is this concern that causes numerous angry parents to show up at every school PTA meeting and yell at that the schools complain that they shouldn't be teaching their children subjects such as sexual education and evolution. While some may find these parents reactions ridiculous and bizarre, it is well with in their parental rights to protest. Although, what many of these parents fail to realize is they are teaching their children many of the the same things they are protesting using fairy tales. Nobody ever stops to think about the true meaning behind fairy tales, after all what harm can come from reading a bed time story, but the truth is that many of these stories have subliminal messages. Cinderella, for example, seems like it's just about a hard working girl who perseveres, though suffering, is payed off by her living happily ever after with a prince, right? One could not be more wrong, Cinderella contains messages which teach kids a sense of entitlement, vanity, and to not stand up for ones self. Children are constantly asking their parents for toys, junk food, and money. Parents should just be able tell their children yes or no when they make such requests, but sadly thats not the case. When a parent tells their kid no quite often...

Although regional differences are not as distinct these days, many issues are currently causing division among the states and people of our country. These issues lead to what our history class describes as “modern sectionalism.” One issue is homeschooling. Benefits of Homeschooling: How It Could Make Kids Smarter, explains how homeschooling is a good thing. The author is saying...

...our nation. There are many questions asked what the times they will be in school is, do they have to wear uniforms, what kind of extra circulators do they have, and how much does it cost. Every parent wants to make the best decision and now that home schooling is an optionand more and more are switching their kids. The behaviors, health, and attitude are better. What more could a parent ask for that is what every parent wants and only the parent acan make thst happen. Know that there is a choice to home school your child it is more ongoing in this country because of the better outcomes with the children. Home schooling has a lot of different benefits not having to worry about time, and it has been said that it makes kids smarter. When your child goes to a school you have to make sure to get them on the bus, then off the bus especially with smaller children. It takes a lot of time and you have to have a plan for what is going to happen every day your child attends school. In most schools there are so many kids it is hard for children to get that individual time, well not for home schooled children they can get all the one on one time needed because their parents are teaching them and there are only a 2 or 3 children instead of 25. This gives your child better encouragement and helps them learn something better making them smarter, then a child that does not get the individual time at a school. Private schooling has been an option in the school system for a long time. It is not...

...The time you spend in school. Instead of having kids sitting in school for hours and hours a day I believe that short sweet and simple school days should take over. There is generally a lot of wasted time during the school day and everyone could receive benefits for shorter days. The teachers would have a lot more time on their hands to grade papers. With all their extra time they can devote more time to their students and any help they may require. The kids would benefit because no one wants to be in school hours on end. Kids would have more free time in their day. They would not need to stress over getting homework done on top of playing sports or any extracurricular activities that promote kids being healthy. They would also benefit because if they start to fall behind in school they can easily stay after class and get the help they need while not worrying about a ride home or missing the bus. Both teachers and kids alike would benefit from the sleep they receive from, not staying up all night trying to get homework done. The overall stress of going to school and having a thousand things running through your head would be eliminated. They both spend more time with family and friends. They have all this free time to get school work done could improve on people being social and stepping away from their cell phones for a change. Today’s school system only focuses on tests to grade how well kids are doing. You see one side of the story with tests. The schools should follow...
