Action
Lights, camera, action! Action is the genre I have chosen. There are many stand-alone action films such as Commando, 48hrs and Con Air. There are even more action film series such as Die Hard, Rambo, James Bond and Underworld. The movie I have chosen to suit this genre is the action RED: Retired and Extremely Dangerous
In 1920’s and 1930’s, action films were often about swashbuckling heroes, involving a damsel in distress and featured a romantic element such as the 1920 silent film The Mark of Zorro. The 1940’s incorporated war and western action films including the 1955 war story The Colditz Story. In 1959, Alfred Hitchcock re-invented the spy-action genre with his film North by Northwest and introduced action-orientated set pieces with the crop duster scene and the finale on Mount Rushmore.
This film, North by Northwest, helped inspire producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman film their own spy-adventure film. James Bond, inspired by Ian Fleming’s novels, took the world by storm and is still used today. James Bond introduced some of the common elements and features of an action film that are still used today.
In the 1970’s, gritty detective stories and urban crime drama’s led to a number of police officer films. Asian martial-arts themed movies also appeared including Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon. Also popularized by the cross of martial arts and cops and robbers, Chuck Norris entered with films like the 1977 Good Guys Wear Black. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas then introduced us to Indiana Jones, continuing with the James Bond inspired hero. In 1982, the first ‘Buddy Cop’ film, 48hrs, came out.
The first Rambo film also appeared in 1982, and when its success was proved, it spawned a sequel in 1985. Die Hard was also introduced in 1987 and the first sequel followed in 1988. This era introduced actors such as Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.
Action film characters are black and white. The audience will automatically know who the hero is and who the villain is, although they sometimes have tendencies of the opposing side, for example the villain is sympathetic or the hero’s choices are questionable. The hero also has limited support. Often, the hero is by themselves against the villain’s henchmen and is unable to stop and rest, like the first Die Hard movie where the hero is an off-duty cop caught up in a hostage-situation. There is also the element of time. Sometimes it can be a bomb ticking down, like in the movie Speed, other times it’s a villain’s deadline.
There are many characteristics that make an action movie suited to the genre. First is the action. The over-use of violence mean a lot of people die and things are blown apart, most commonly aircraft like aeroplanes and helicopters. The second characteristic of an action movie are the fire-arms. There is often an unlimited supply of weapons and vehicles available for the villains, whereas the hero has to use whatever they take from the deceased or what they already have. The third is the women. There are always women involved, either on the good or bad side. The women are usually beautiful and often in their late 20’s or their early 30’s with slim, tanned bodies. They dress sexually, in order to appeal to the male audience as they are the biggest fans. If they are on the bad side, they often try to seduce the hero. If they are on the good side they usually carry big weapons and are ready with witty remarks to deter any man trying to hit on them.
RED is an action film that focus’ on Frank Moses, a former black-ops CIA agent and his attempts to find out who is trying to assassinate him and why. He enlists the help of his customer service agent, his former mentor, a former black-ops agent and conspiracy theorist, an ex-Russian Secret agent and a former wet-work agent (wet-work agent – Russian for spilling of blood). This film changes the set standards for a common action film. First, the main women aren’t sexually appealing. Sarah, the customer service agent, wears jeans and button-up shirts. Victoria, the wet-work agent, commonly wears long, flowing, white dresses and jackets. The heroes also, being retiree’s and older, don’t wear tight t-shirts and skinny jeans but rather suits and t-shirts with jackets. The hero is not by themselves, but rather in a team. This movie’s villain, however, isn’t clear-cut. At first, one assumes that it is CIA agent William Cooper, but he is really a pawn, whereas the real villains are Cynthia Wilkes and Alexander Dunning. There are numerous gun fights and a few fist fights as well as several explosions. In this movie, different to most others, the hero doesn’t have to steal from the dead; he has his own shed full of fire-arms and bombs. The older team defeat the younger team, not by gun power but rather by small events that seem insignificant but overall, change the outcome altogether. However, while the features aren’t what most action films put into their movies, it still uses the common features and elements of a good action film.
A good action movie has clear-cut characters, so time is not wasted in trying to determine who is good and who is evil. It also has beautiful women, an over-use of explosions and violence and lots of fire-arms. I chose to watch RED because of the change in the standard storyline pattern. Usually, the woman are sexually-appealing, the male is young and still in the police force and are by themselves. Despite all that, it still suits the genre. Action movies are still being made with the main hero being reinvented with different values, attitudes and beliefs. People don’t mind that the film settings, actors and storylines change because the action hero holds the same ideals as them. This hero is real enough in their own imaginations that the action and events become believable and they can then imagine themselves in their shoes. So, in conclusion, lights, camera, ACTION!

Strong Again Rhetorical Analysis

...Bennett Professor Jack Wood COMM3300 7/11/2024 Genre Criticism: Barack Obama Introduction Many politicians have come up with a slew of slogans for their campaigns. Slogans like “All the way with L.B.J.” for Lyndon B. Johnson’s campaign, “This time vote like your whole world depended on it” for Richard Nixon’s campaign, and “Stronger together” for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. These are all examples of a rhetorical artifact that fits within a political-slogan-type genre. For my second paper, I will be analyzing Barack Obama’s slogan from his 2008 campaign. His slogan is as follows: “Change We Can Believe In” (Obama 2008). I believe this slogan follows the proper guidelines and structure of the many political slogans that have come before...

Media Genre

...First written assignment on Genre Hot Fuzz- In the trailer for ‘Hut Fuzz’ there are a lot of genre signifies to signify it’s an action film such as explosions, guns, people screaming in terror, and car chases, these conventions all suggest it is an action film, however there are also scenes such as when one of the police officer falls through a fence, and when they have to find a swan, these all connote it is also a comedy. This links to Rick Altman’s theory, the semantics of Hot Fuzz of the guns, explosions suggest it’s an action however the syntactic such as the dialogue of the characters portray a comedy. Although, the props of the film and a few scenes suggest it’s an action film, the lay out of the trailer, signify it’s a parody of an action film which is part of Steve Neale’s theory of the cycle. Robert Stam might support the idea that this film overlaps genre boundaries creating this film a hybrid genre. This could have been done to create a wider target audience but not too big as everyone would not feel engaged enough. Therefore it would get more publicity as people who enjoy action and people who enjoy comedy would go to see it. I think both of these genres have remained popular as with comedy you can use different jokes, different ways to make people laugh, ensuring people to feel like its constantly new material to keep them laughing and engaged in the comedy genre. The action genre has also stayed popular as its repetition and keeps them on edge of what stunt...

Explore the Genre Conventions in the Two Main Texts You Have Studied so Far.

...Explore the genre conventions in the two main texts you have studied so far. I will be writing about the two texts that I am studying (The Avengers Assemble and Sightseers). The first text, Sightseers, has the hybrid genre of black comedy, comedy, crime and thriller, whilst also touching on horror at points (the murders). The Avengers Assemble has a hybrid genre of sci-fi, action and fantasy. I will be looking at the parts of these movies that are typical of the genres that they are categorised in. The first text I will explore is Sightseers. In black comedies and crime, the iconography and location is often rural countryside; so Sightseers is challenging the conventions of the crime genre – often held in places associated more with ‘gangsters’, e.g. council estates, rougher areas (perhaps more populated) as opposed to the peaceful nature of the countryside. The choice of a caravan park adds a feeling of tranquillity and isn't an immediate location that springs to mind when it comes to thinking about the crime genre - so Ben Wheatley, the director, who has directed black comedies in the past, will have wanted to challenge the conventions of these movies. The comedy aspect is explored within quite a few scenes, the jokey comments that Tina is making to her mum at the beginning of the movie (where she repeats 'mum' several times, which is becomes quite humorous). The sort of humour used does challenge the conventions of a comedy as there are no out and out jokes, but some of...

Alfredson Conventions

...Tomas Alfredson’s critically acclaimed ‘let the right one in’ (based on a novel of the same name by author John Ajvide Lindqvist) is an arthouse, low budget horror-thriller set in Blackeberg (a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden) in the early 1980’s. This essay will investigate the themes of the horror genre focusing on narrative codes and conventions including Claude Lévi-Strauss’ binary oppositions and Roland Barthes’ action and enigma codes, concluding with whether ‘Let the right one in’ is a typical representation of these theories. ‘Let the right one in’ falls mainly into the category of horror, in someways staying quite typical to its genre. For example it features typical narrative elements of the horror genre including murder and survival as well as style conventions such as low-key lighting and an ominous score. However, ‘Let the right one in’ also subverts these conventions by challenging various narrative elements. Alfredson was unconcerned with vampire conventions associated with the horror genre and scaled down many...

...Classification Essay When one thinks of videogames one might think of Pacman, or Digdug, or maybe that little paddle ball game on the Atari console. There were no genres of videogames back then, back then it was just videogames as there weren’t many of them out there. But nowadays videogames are more complex. The graphics have been enhanced greatly; there are many storylines, and consoles and ways to play said consoles. They even have motion activated gaming on a console called the Nintendo Wii. But no matter what console one is playing there will usually be a genre associated with the game being played. There are five major categories in which one should categorize his or her videogames, and some of them have sub categories. These genres include Action games, Adventure games, Roleplaying games, simulation games, and Strategy games. If one were to look at these genres that person would notice that there are many sub categories, as well as a list of games to go along with these categories so it is important to look at each genre as being more diverse instead of being specific to only one game. The first and probably the broadest category is action. An action game requires quick reflexes, accuracy and timing to overcome obstacles. There are few sub categories such as fighting games, platform games, and FPS (first person shooter) games. Fighting games are those in which two opponents face off in an arena (usually with melee based weapons) and face off till one of the...

Super Heroes

...Are we waving goodbye to the superheroes? We all know them, and we all love them. But the era of the superhero movies are maybe coming to an end. Why is that? And will we no longer be looking at buff men and women dressed in slim tights and colourful capes? A dominating and very unique genre of movies saw it’s first light of the day back in the 00’s. It all started with the Batman-movie who was published in 2002 and became a massive success. If we look at the cold facts we can see, that in the list of best selling movies are The Avengers from 2012 and The Dark Night from 2008 present. This is an independent genre, although it’s got a lot in common with the action-genre. In both genres, we have an outstanding hero who saves the day and is unbeatable. But in the action-genre we have heroes like Harry Callahan and John McClane, who comes home at the and of the day and still remains the same hero. Unlike Spiderman and Batman who comes home in the end of the day and becomes a whole other person when they take their masks of. Often, when they get home, the superheroes turn into the opposite of a superhero- someone that you would never expect to save the world. And someone you could identify yourself with. And that is one of the most important parts in a superhero movie, because the hero stays anonymous and that creates an exiting story and a different view on the heroes. These superheroes are also different, because they take care of business by them selves. They do...

One Genre Fits All?

...One genre fits all? Whether you prefer a romance, an action or a thriller, Science Fiction seems to fit it all in but still have its own unique identity. Is this why it appeals to so many? As Reported By ReJohnson. Looking around at movie advertisements shown on billboards, bus stands and television, it’s hard to miss the growing popularity of science fiction movies and books in modern society. Though still not as popular as genres such as Action and romance, many people have found an interest and love for science fiction. Over the past decade, there have been over 300 Science Fiction movies released. Statistics show that 5 in every 10 movies released in today’s society is science fiction. Many of them hitting the top ten list and have been nominated or have won major awards (e.g. Avatar which won 3 Oscars, the Golden Globe etc.). So why does it appeal to modern day audiences? It seems that in modern society, no matter how you look at it, Science fiction is a genre that can appeal to each individuals taste making it appealing to almost anyone. Though it is mainly based around an imagined future and scientific and technological advances, directors and producers have created a scale as to how ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ the science fiction movie is. While Hard Science Fiction focuses mostly on the speculation of the future as seen in the award- winning Matrix, Soft science Fiction focuses more on the entertainment of the audience and allowing them to escape from reality as seen in the...

...to the statements included in the previous chapter. Several sources and references are used by the researchers in gathering more information and for the further integration of the proposition of this study. According to "JAPANESE ANIMATION PAGE (THEATRICAL & TV)", Anime Fandom was originated in Los Angeles in 1997. There are five types of anime, the Shonen, Shoujo, Seinen, Josei and Kodomomuke. They are not genres; rather they are labels which focus on a specific target demographic/intended audience. The first type, Shonen typically aimed to young boys under the age of fifteen. A lot of these anime have a young male hero and are commonly focused on action, adventure and fighting. Second is Seinen which are intended to young men between the ages of 15-24. This type of anime tends to be of a more violent and/or psychological in nature, though there are Seinen comedies as well. The third is Shojou anime. It is the female counterpart to Shonen which tends to focus on romance and idealized interpersonal relationships, but does not necessarily mean it doesn’t have action or adventure. The fourth is the Josei which is a variety male leads. Generally, these works tend to contain more realistic interpersonal relationships and can cover darker subjects like rape and infidelity. Lastly, Kodomomuke are anime directed to children. These works...

Music Essay Questions

...Essay Questions #1 1 Describe the three basic types of music heard in the original scores during the silent film era and cite specific examples from The Birth of a Nation. * There are three basic types of music that can be heard in the original scores during the silent film era. These 3 type are known as adaptations, arrangements, and newly composed music or originals. Adaptations of Classical Works usually involve large action and dramatic scenes. They typically involve the borrowing of part or all of a song for the use in a film score. For example, in The Birth of a Nation, adaptations were used when an arrangement by Mozart was used for the Lincoln assassination as well as the end of the movie. Since this composition is one of seriousness and intensity, it was used to give the scenes a sense of tension and violence. Arrangements can be defined as remakes of previously composed work. In these works, a composer will borrow only the melody of a classic song and recreate it to make an entirely new sound. In The Birth of a Nation, many well-known melodies are used to emotionally connect to the audience. Tunes such as “Maryland, My Maryland” and “Dixie” are put into the film to create a lighter less dramatic feeling. New and original compositions, are defined as just that. A song with melody in which the composer writes without the help of other tunes. These are typically written specifically for the film itself. Griffith uses this type of music to create a recreate themes...

Genre Reflective Essay

...Genre Reflective Essay It is not so surprising that every time I heard the word “genre”, I always thought about the most common genres we see in movies, library sections, or on the back of some of my favorite books; not realizing there is so much more to it than that. Genre; class or category, form or a technique, classification or grouping with limitations; there is so much to say about genre, whether it is about a book, movie, or music. The word genre, a French word from 1770, especially used for “independent style” (genre). There are many important aspects of genre; it addresses the relationship between the author and the reader, the director and the viewer, the composer and the listener. It draws a path between them, the path that makes us visualize the pleasure we get, or the path that gives us ideas about what to expect. And even going deeper, there are sub-genres, super-genres, and indeed what is technique, style, mode, formula or thematic grouping to one may be treated as a genre by another (Bordwell 147). We make decisions based on genre, whether we realize it every time we make these decisions or not. I believe in some cases, we are made to believe in a certain way based on our past experiences. For example, listening to a classical music in the evening while it’s raining outside, or reading a novel on a Sunday morning; watching a black-and-white movie and assume it is likely to be a romantic movie, or it is likely to be an action movie if Jason Statham is the main...

...Adorno (Audience Theory) Passive Consumption, Hypodermic Model (Frankfurt School): "A strong argument suggests that audiences may be passively affected by the sexist, violent representations in GTAV as it is a more realist text than other shoot em' up action adventure games. Young audiences ultimately may begin to view women differently and think that the aspirational violence is acceptable as a means to an end". Andy Medhurst (Representation Theory) Stereotyping is Shorthand for Identification: "One way that texts like Waterloo Road and Skins for example allow for audience identification is through stereotyping and giving characters an extreme representation". Angela McRobbie (Gender Theory) Post Feminist Icon Theory: "Lara Croft, Lady Gaga and Madonna for example could be identified as post feminist icons as they exhibit the stereotypical characteristics of both the male and female strength, courage, control and logic but also are willing to be sexualized for the male gaze. This control element of their own representation is crucial in understanding the theory". Baudrillard Hyper Reality: "Some texts are difficult to distinguish in terms of the representation of reality from a simulation of reality e.g. Big Brother. The boundaries are blurred as codes and conventions create a set of signifiers which we understand but in fact the representation is a copy of a copy". Kung Fu Movies

...arts. Kung Fu has its origins in China, which before being modernized, was popularly known as Wuxia (Greene, 2014). This film genre is an important creation of Hong Kong Cinema.
