...taught about the danger of strangers. They learn at an early age that they should not talk to strangers. This practice is known as “Stranger Danger.” This fear of strangers has stemmed into parents wanting to have more control over their children, and trying to avoid having bad things happen to them. Naturally, no parent wants to see harm come to their children. As a result of being overprotected, children are becoming more and more sheltered. Children are often reliant on their parents until a much older age than what used to be considered the norm. In this paper, I will examine how “Stranger Danger” and its effects on childrens’ independence can be researched. I will examine the methods of research available. By examining the available types of research, I will further explore the types that best pertain to finding the answers to my question of whether or not “Stranger Danger” has caused us to shelter our children too much. Research Methods Existing Sources The first method of research is the use of existing sources. Many sources of information exist. The internet is a very useful tool in finding information that pertains to this theory. When using Google to search for the term “Stranger Danger,” one is presented with a wide array of choices. I chose to look for credible websites that could provide relevant information. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children issued a press release stating their view on “Stranger Danger”. Nancy McBride,...

...The PSA persuasive project Maddi and I chose to do was about stranger awareness taught in the Jumpstart community. Although there were a few issues that we experienced, we were prepared for them and overcame them. Starting this project, it took a couple days to figure out a topic that we were willing to put all this time into. I came up with the idea of centering our attention around children. Shortly after, we found the topic about stranger awareness. This was concerning that children should not be taught “Stranger Danger” instead, they should be alert of strangers. This means they should not be afraid to talk to someone if they are in need of help. Our next step for our project was figuring out how we were going to get our message across to the...

...violence and fear and I feel much better prepared when it comes to recognizing dangerous situations. My favorite part of the book was the warning signs to know when a stranger is a potential threat. This was fascinating to me because I’ve been told since I was just a little boy to beware of strangers. But with all these warnings about strangers I had never been told how to recognize when a stranger was being genuinely helpful and friendly, or trying to harm me in any way. I found some of the warning signs intriguing such as a method called Forced Teaming. Stranger’s use forced teaming to create a sense of trust. They team themselves together with their victim by saying “we” and making it seem like they’re closer than they really are to their victims by pairing them together. Other warning signs were fairly obvious such as Discounting The Word No. This means that the stranger won’t leave when you ask him to. However, something I did learn by reading about this was that if you let the stranger get away with discounting the word no just once you have given them control. They feel as if you are weak and can be easily convinced. The proper thing to do is to stick to your No, don’t negotiate. Be stern and show you’re in control and not them. I feel like out of all the things I read, this will stick with me the most. Strangers often converse with me and this information about saying no and sticking to it has the potential to save me from an extremely dangerous situation The most interesting...

...Social Media and Online Predators Although there are many benefits of using social media, there are also many dangers. One of those dangers is the vast number of sexual predators that lurk in the midst of the cyber-world. The internet is not such a friendly environment when it comes to online sexual predators. As more and more individuals gain access to social media networking sites, the easier it becomes for online predators to victimize them. According to Richard M. Guo, “an online sexual predator is someone who uses the internet to sexually exploit vulnerable individuals, typically under-aged youths” (“Stranger Danger and the Online Social Network”). Online predators use many ways to lurk in young individuals. One of those ways are by impersonating someone. For example, the predator would pose as a younger teenager to appeal to other young teenagers. Then they would follow up by striking up conversations with those young teenagers in hopes of building up a certain trust level which would lead to easy access for the predator to attack the young teen. Having access to victimize the individual can lead to many outcomes. Those outcomes includes date rape, kidnapping, and sex trafficking. The way the predator would go about committing one of those outcomes is by asking the teen to meet up somewhere as a friendly invite. In the end their intention would be to harm the teen. The predator can also the threaten or blackmail the teen into doing what they say to do....

...READING CLOSELY AND THINKING CRITICALLY The positive effects of posting on a social network is that you can stay in touch with your friends and it can also be a way to express yourself. It was a serious mistake because due to his poor choice of words the post indicated that he was threatening the police guard. Few adjust the settings because they feel like Facebook has enough privacy and some are also unaware of the setting options. For the case in paragraph 1 I believe the officials did the right thing. The student was statement about the police officer that might have no even been true. This put the officer in danger and was the wrong way to approach his problem. He should have talked to the school officials instead of posting on social...

...Parent” (2008) suggests that parents should monitor their children closely online. Coben supports his suggestion by listing the many dangers on the internet. Coben suggests that parents should install spyware on their child’s internet in order to keep them safe. The author writes in an informal tone for parents. Indeed, parents should monitor children closely online by using spyware because they can see if their child is in danger and they can help prevent their child getting in danger. Parents should monitor their children online because they can see if their child is in any kind of danger. For example, Coben states in his article “The Undercover Parent”, “One friend of mine, using spyware to monitor his college bound, straight-A daughter, found out that not only was she using drugs but she was sleeping with her dealer…. He decided to come clean, to let her know how he had found out, to speak with her about the dangers inherent in her behavior” (Coben, Paragraph 13). The example shows how a father used spyware to find out if his daughter was in danger, which she was in, the father then had a conversation with his daughter to tell her that the things she was doing online was very dangerous. The father prevented his daughter from getting into even more danger on the internet by using spyware. Since the father talked to his daughter, she wasn’t in any danger any more. Furthermore, Ellen Goodman in her article “Big Brother meets Big Mother” states, “but even if kids aren’t wandering in...

...the palm of our hands which makes it harder for parents to monitor their kid’s internet behaviors. Basically whatever you do is connected to the Internet, from talking on the phone, video chatting and texting. But most people do not realize that there are consequences, which relates to all of the above if not taken certain measures and precautions that would lessen the risk of such threats that might arise while using Internet. Don’t get me wrong, the Internet is a wonderful tool that benefits everyone but others who are the rotten apples in the bunch use it to take advantage of the innocent users online. In this paper, I will argue on why it is important to have certain knowledge and guidelines to follow to protect us from predators and dangers of the Social Networks. I remember being a kid and my parents would complain that I stayed too...

...not around. You hear so many cases of children being abducted or assaulted all because they were too trusting of a stranger. The short story, “Little Red Riding Hood”, is a story that a parent would find hard to read. As stated in the lesson the theme of a story is a representation of the idea behind the story. The overall theme of this short story in my opinion is trusting strangers. (Clugston, 2010). Little Red Riding Hood was a little too trusting of the wolf and she found herself paying for a mistake that most children make. You send your child off to a relative’s house not thinking that may be your last time seeing them. I can recall growing up in the early eighties and some of the things we worry about now, we did not have to worry about then. As children we could go to the park, movies and different neighborhoods and not have to worry about something happening to us. By no means am I suggesting that we did not have anything to worry about, however, it seems as if we did not have the same trust issues as children do now. I am too afraid to let my daughter go outside by herself in fearing that she would hurt herself or someone else hurting her. I believe it all comes down to trusting what you have taught your child and that they would follow through on what they are taught. Reading this story as a child we were taught that talking to strangers was dangerous and it had great...

...Over 50% of teenagers nowadays receive online messages from random strangers they have never seen before. In fact, most of those teens that do run into these strangers do not tell an adult about it either. There are many pedophiles and predators online that can be a threat to teens and kids. Harlan Coben believes says that spyware can help parents aid their teens from the dangers of the internet. He thinks that spyware should be used to a certain extend, and it shouldn’t be used to be nosy. I agree with Coben that parents should monitor their kids to help protect them from harm’s way, but they should do it to a certain degree. The advancement of technology in today’s world requires spyware to help a child. In Harlan Coben’s article, “The Undercover Parent”, Coben says, “Trust is one thing, but surrendering parental responsibility to a machine that allows the entire world access to your home borders on negligence,” (Coben, 1). This means that with new tech, there needs to be watchful eyes around. With the pushes of technology in today’s world, many...

...Stability can be defined as someone or something being comfortable or stable within their environment. A stability issue for a child could be an example of an 18 month-year-old child who is enrolled in a daycare. The child attends daycare every day and is comfortable with seeing his or her teachers and friends, but begins to cry when they see an unfamiliar face and begins to runs to one of their teachers. This is what some people call a stranger danger phase. It’s when a child is uncomfortable with seeing or interacting with new people, which can cause the child to have a stability issue. According to Santrock (2013), “Stability is due to heredity and possibly early experiences in which the infant or young child encountered considerable stress when interacting with people.” If a child has stranger danger, then there is a possibility that when the child gets into grade school they will be more likely shy towards everyone....

Didn’t you say you reached us roving on the sea?” (VII, 272-276). Nobody other than Athena knew that the beggar was truly Odysseus. ... no harm is done. Where the defence of Volenti non fit Injuria applies it operates as a complete defence absolving the Defendant of all liability. The defence of Volenti non fit Injuria requires a freely entered and voluntary agreement by the Claimant, in full knowledge of the circumstances, to absolve the Defendant of all legal consequences of their actions. Let’s understand this with the help of a case law , in this case plaintiff was a spectator at motor car race being held at Brookland on a track owned by the defendant company. During the race, there was a collision between two cars, one of which was thrown among spectators, thereby injuring the plaintiff. It was held that the plaintiff impliedly took the risk of such an injury, the danger being inherent in the sport which any spectator could foresee the defendant was not liable. In other predominant case , while the driver was taking the jeep...

...A human has many emotions. Fear is one of the main emotions. It is an instinct of the brain and the nervous system. Fear is meant for self-protection and can be a warning instinct for when the body senses danger. When the body senses danger, it reacts in both mental and physical ways. Fear is usually triggered by something sudden or unexpected. Then come the symptoms; sweating, high blood pressure, and different sensations throughout the body. The reaction from the body is getting prepared to fight or flee from the threat. Other side effects for fear are muscle tension, headaches, nausea, tiredness, fidgeting, trembling, being easily startled, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, running away, forcing on the danger, panicking, (shortness of breath, rapid heart beat,) and fighting to destroy the object of fear, and cold hands. Sweating is the most common way to react to fear, this causing a person’s desire to react to fear is to run. Having a rapid heartbeat is just a person’s heart trying to provide more blood for their body to deal with fear....
