...thousand years the widespread belief was that the earth was stationary and at the center of the universe. Since that time, through a series of discoveries it has been proved that the earth not stationary and it is not at the center of the universe. The Ptolemaic system was developed early in the first century by Claudius Ptolemy who believed like most Greek Scholars in the geocentric view that the earth was stationary and at the center of the universe. Over one thousand years later, Nicolas Copernicus, a mathematician and astronomer believed in the heliocentric theory that it was not the earth, but the sun that was the center of the universe. His book, “On the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres” laid the groundwork for future observations and discoveries and his work became known as the Copernican model. Galileo’s observations through the use of a telescope he built, was able to provide the evidence needed to support the heliocentric theory. In 1572 Tyler Brahe discovered a new star and after sixteen months it disappeared from site. This discovery conflicted with earlier views that the stars were fixed. (Space Discovery website, n.d.) Based on his observations and measurements of our solar system, Brahe proposed a model that fell in between the Ptolemaic and Copernican models. (The Obervations of Tycho Brahe, n.d.) His discoveries and writings were central to the advancement in understanding of our solar system. Johannes Kepler discovered that the planets orbit around...

...Introduction The term ‘online’ is the state of being connected to a network of computers or other devices. This term is often used to refer to someone who is currently connected to the internet. Information system is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, processing, and communicating information. Individuals, corporations, and businesses alike all rely on information systems to manage their operations, compete in the marketplace, supply services, and balance daily lives. As an example, corporations rely on information systems to process financial accounts, manage human resources, provide basic services, study, shop, and bank. An information system (IS) is defined by the free dictionary as a set of inter-related components working together to collect, retrieve, process, store, and distribute information in order to facilitate the planning, control, coordination, analysis, and decision making in companies and other organizations. The World Wide Web (WWW) has become the largest sources of information. However, its content cannot be manipulated in a general way because of two main issues: (1) Finding relevant information is a difficult task and (2) the web is unstructured. Search engines such as Altavista, Google, Lycos, and many others offer some form of structure and comfort to users, however, their query facilities are often limited and come in the form of HTML pages. ...The Hindenburg Disaster Eng110 Abstract This paper talks about the German zeppelin, The Hindenburg. In this paper I discuss the theories behind the cause of the tragic event that took place. I discuss whether it was the paint or the gas inside that was the main cause. I provide my opinion on the reason it happened. I also give examples from websites and a popular television series on the discovery and science channels. I discuss how they try to figure out why this actually happened. The Hindenburg Disaster May 6th 1937 is a day that went down in history. This is the day that the German zeppelin, which is an air or in the case of The Hindenburg a gas filled ship. (Wise Geek, n.d.)These ships were named after their creator Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The Hindenburg exploded killing many people. It took less than thirty seconds. While the exact cause is unknown there have been many theories. The most popular theories include that it was the hydrogen in the bladder of the balloon and that the skin of the ship was painted with a mixture of chemicals that is used in the making of a mixture known as thermite. Recently I was watching a television show called Mythbusters on the Discovery channel. They said on their website (Discovery Channel, n.d.) that a retired NASA scientist conducted test and proved that is was the paint not the gas that caused the zeppelin to go down. Well the Mythbusters conducted their own test to test such claims. The Hindenburg was a German made zeppelin...

...Inventions and Discoveries Paper Ryan Fagen University of Phoenix HIS 458 January 30, 2013 Stephanie Fink De Backer Inventions and Discoveries Paper The invention of the telescope and the microscope has led to many great discoveries that have been of great significance to us, the human race. First we will take a look at the telescope and provide some significant examples. Second we will look at the discoveries that came from the invention of the microscope and the impact they both had on our development as humans and our place in the universe. In addition to providing examples of significant discoveries, I will offer my opinion as to why these discoveries challenged traditions and changed society as a whole. The National Geographic Society (1996) website, since the first telescope was invented, there has been much advancement in the design and the types of telescopes used. Besides the early refracting telescope used by Galileo or the more modern reflecting telescope used by Hubble, the telescope has changed the way look at the cosmos and what we know of the universe. Telescopes are classified by the task performed. Some names given to the different types of telescopes are astrograph, comet seeker, graphic telescope infrared telescope, solar telescope, space telescope, or zenith telescope The invention of the telescope in the 17th century has brought forth many significant discoveries but none more significant then that of the Earth, Moon and other planets orbit around...

...controversial topic over the past few decades, especially in the United States. Before the 1970s, the word “fetology” had not even come into existence. As knowledge of this subject expanded, the development of the Ultrasound led to many discoveries about the human fetus. Unfortunately, another fruit of the Ultrasound’s discovery was that of abortion. Statistics show that “39% of deaths in the United States are due to abortion”, making it the number one reason of deaths in the country ("ABORTION: The Number One Cause Of American Deaths.") Additionally, the total average of worldwide cases of abortion adds up to “115,000”. Yet the rate of abortions in America is about “3,700 per day”, which puts the percentage of abortions in the U.S. at only 3% ("Abortion Statistics." Abortion Statistics) This is certainly not only a crime in America, but a worldwide epidemic. Countless precious and unborn lives have been lost in this relentless act of inhumanity, and it seems that their “silent scream” has yet to be heard ("Silent Scream.") Of course there have been organizations, websites, and campaigns to raise awareness about this robbery of innocent life. Pro-life institutions such as the American Life League advocate the protection of unborn lives through adoption and donations for the cause of anti-abortion. Various websites, abort73.com for example, promote the concept of “Birth Before Death” (Facts About Abortion: State Abortion Laws (U.S.)) These efforts on behalf of the anti-abortion...

...Greece. In the fifth century BC, Leucippus and his student Democritus suggested that there were small indivisible particles, which he called atoms – from the Greek atomos meaning ‘uncuttable’. This idea of atoms has been built on by many other scientists over hundreds of years. These scientists have drawn conclusions from a variety of different experiments. Some conclusions have been arrived at when scientists were researching other questions, and some ideas have been proven by designing a specific experiment. A model of the structure of the atom is still evolving today. Particle physicists are working at particle accelerators like CERN, on newly discovered quarks. In this task you will be researching one of the models to have been developed over the years to describe the structure of an atom. Task Your task is to produce a report into one of the different models of the atom that has been developed by scientists since 1890. Your research should be done online, using the web links provided below as well as any other credible sources you feel would be useful. Your report will be a written report and should include images and, where appropriate, diagrams of the experiments conducted. Your report should include: * Information about the key scientists who developed this model of the atom * A description of what they believed the atom looked like when they began their work * The key experiments that they did and what they found out from them * The conclusions...

...study medicine in 1583. He was fascinated with many subjects, particularly mathematics and physics. During his studies at Pisa he was exposed to the Aristotelian view. In 1585, due to financial difficulties Galileo left the university before earning his degree. Galileo continued to study mathematics, supporting himself with minor teaching positions. He began a two-decade study on objects in motion and published The Little Balance in 1586. This work earned him some fame and gained him a teaching position at the .his fabled experiments with falling objects and produced his manuscript Du Motu (On Motion), this was a departure from Aristotelian views about motion and falling objects and thus left him isolated among his colleagues and in 1592 his contract with the University of Pisa was not renewed. Galileo quickly found a new position teaching geometry mechanics and astronomy at the University of Padua. In 1604, controversial findings begin to surface as Galileo published The Operations of the Geometrical and Military Compass. This work revealed Galileo’s skiills with experiments and practical technological applications and he also constructed a hydrostatic balance for measuring small object. Due to these developments Galileo received additional income and more recognition and during the same year, he refined his theories on motion and falling objects, he also developed the universal law of acceleration, which all objects in the universe obeyed....
