...I. Analyzing Faces and Heads: Physiognomy and Phrenology To evaluate the outward appearance of the body and to read the mental and moral capacities of the person. Leaders of all 4 of these movements were highly educated. A. Physiognomy and facial observation –from greek, physio = nature, nomen = judge, judgement of human nature. Believed you could judge one’s mental and moral character by looking at one’s face. A ton of phrases today still show the judgement of character based solely on face (high brow, snooty, shifty eyed). 1. Giovanni Battista della Porta, Italy, De Humana Physiognomia (1586) –wrote first book on physiognomy. Porta was in Naples, Italy, a scientist and mathematician. Based his ideas on animal characteristics. In his book, he compared certain human faces to certain animal characteristics, and then associated the characteristics of the animal to the human. 2. Johann Lavater (1741-1801), Germany, Von der Physiognomik (1772) –Popularizes physiognomy, from Zurich, Switzerland, and then moved to Germany. Trained as a pastor. Makes physiognomy a science, through the publication of his work, “essays on physiognomy”. In the book, he laid out 100 physiognomy rules, where a look is associated with a trait. 3. General theory –The belief that mental and moral traits (character) can be determined and judged by one’s outward facial structure (their appearance and expressions). One trained in physiognomy could diagnose character by analyzing the face. 4. Samuel R...

...Excel Functions Every Community Manager Should Know Tips for data manipulation from our Analysts Excel Functions Every Community Manager Should Know Tips for data manipulation from our Analysts Excel can be intimidating Let’s face it, without functions Excel is just a wonderful way to store information. With functions, however, Excel becomes an amazing tool for manipulating and making sense out of large amounts of data. That’s why we love Excel so much. With a few little functions we can take a massive range of data, mine a wealth of information out of it, and turn the data into informed action items. Of course, the thought of trying to string together complex functions in Excel is enough to send anybody into a cold sweat. We couldn’t provide the depth of data or the level of insight offered in our reports without our awesome team of data Analysts who bring it all together. That’s why we asked them to walk us through some of the basic Excel functions they use on a daily basis – so that data ranges are easier to manipulate even if you’re not an Excel wizard. We created this list with community managers in mind, and we broke each function down in a way that’s easy to understand. Our Analysts’ guide to Excel functions So what exactly are Excel functions? Functions show a relation between a set of inputs and a set of outputs, where each input has exactly one output. In Excel, functions take the data from your workbook (the input) and turn them into information (the output)...

There are many flanges ratings such as 300#, 400#, 600#, 900# and 1500#. Flange type, size and rating are selected depending on pipe size, temperature of commodity. 1.3.2Flange facings: the mating surface of flange, nozzle or valve is called the face. ...deal with serious issues, but in a comical way that makes it less controversial. Its use of the sitcom framework allows it to make light of situations and build upon them in the future. It is because of this use of the sitcom formula, that the show has developed a deep fan base that keeps the show alive. Community reflects American culture through its use of stereotypes, sitcom structure, and its development of a cult following. Community’s main cast is very diverse in race, age, and culture. Though the 7 characters are all diverse, they fit into stereotypes sometimes. Troy the black male, was supposed to play sports for Greendale community college, this follows the stereotype of schools getting black athletes to come to their schools. Troy is also portrayed as unintelligent which touches on the stereotype that athletes are not smart. Though Troy follows these stereotypes, Dan Harmon challenges them by making Troy dorky. Troy becomes best friends with Abed, an Indian character that very weird and is only into movies and television. The two have a very strange, childish relationship. They created a best friend hand shake, play pretend in one of the rooms in their apartment, and once created a giant pillow fort throughout the community college. These are not actions that you would expect from a black athlete. They do not fit the stereotype. Dan Harmon is not the only person to do this. Hitchcock challenged popular stereotypes in his movies....

...Abdallah H Saggaf History 102 03/08/2013 MY BOY JACK My boy jack is a very powerful movie that really moved me in a way that no other movie has in a long time. When I found out that this is about Rudyard Kipling’s son was based on a real event, my reaction to the film were even more sharp. When the movie was finished and the credits started rolling, I sat quietly, pondering the fear of war and all the sacrifices that come with it. It is indeed breath taking. The cast of the film is very genuine. David Haig, whose face looked very familiar to me more than his name, really stood out. Not only does he look like the real Rudyard Kipling, but it is said that he spent over 20 years practicing to fit the real Kipling’s story to stage and screen. David plays Kipling role with great arrogance and patriotism. Even though what he was doing was not pleasant, putting his son in a dangerous situation, for most people it was credible. Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe on the other hand is unforgettably good as the boy who enters the fray of WW1 despite being completely incompetent. Even though Jack had very poor eye site, this did not hold back Kipling’s actions to help his son join the army force. His performance as Jack is very real that as some point, I internally screamed NO! when he directs and leads his group to fight. Daniel Radcliffe brings both power and sadness at the same time in his role, especially when he speaks to his father for the last time and takes off. ...

...Topic 1 – Are Stock Prices predictable? Capital Ideas: Chapter 1: Are Stock Prices Predictable? * It is doubtful * Paul Samuelson – economist and Nobel laureate (receiver): even smart people have a hard time getting rich by predicting stock prices. * While some people never try to outguess the market, in the face of admittedly high odds, y to predict stock prices to keep an entire industry humming (noisy). * The demand for the wisdom produced by armies of security analysts, portfolio managers, television pundits (expert), software peddlers (seller), and newspaper columnists shows no sign of waning (decreasing). * The wealthiest people on Wall Street are professionals whose bank accounts have been inflated by a constant flow of investment advisory fee. Index funds, which hold a diversified cross-section of the market and never sell one stock to buy another, account for less than 15 percent of all equity portfolios. * While no one goes as far to say that it is impossible to make good predictions or that all predictions are destined to be wrong, the abundant evidence and the robust (strong) character of the theories that explain the evidence confirm that the task of predicting stock prices is formidable by any measure. * 1900, Louis Bachelier: * Completed his dissertation titled “The Theory of Speculation.” This was the first effort to employ theory, including mathematical techniques, to explain why stock market behaves as it does. * Set...

...viewer will instantly look at the compelling woman settled in the center of the painting; this is because she is the focal point. The definition of a focal point is a certain element of the painting that pulls the attention of the viewer through ways of composition, color, light and shadow, etc. One way in which the woman is the focal point is through composition. The placement of her body and hands makes the viewer look directly at the woman. The pointing of her left hand’s index finger brings the eye up towards her face, as well as the fact that her facial expression has the most detail out of all the characters in the painting. Although composition plays a crucial role in portraying the women as the focal point, the color in the painting is also important. Nattier used a rich shade of blue for the lady’s shawl and added golden hues to her dress to put the spotlight directly on her. Even the pink and yellow flowers on the head piece adds a change of color that brings the viewer’s attention to her face. The combination of both strategically placed composition and bold color choices allows the lady in the portrait to be the main focus of the entire painting. In addition to the composition and color, there are more features that also make Portrait of a Lady as a Vestal Virgin a great work of art. One other aspect that makes the painting so interesting is the depth. When looking at the painting, there is an orange flame behind the women; this brings the eye towards the background...

...Accepting Stereotypes When looking at media today a lot of people may think it has come a long way in terms of its representation of the LGBTQ+ community. However, what many often fail to acknowledge is how they are being represented. Despite the growing acceptance and portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters in television and film, the main depictions we see are still stereotypes, negative images, and comic reliefs; all there for entertainment and/or to gain credit for diversity. Why is it that today, in the age of second generation human rights activists, the majority of people still seem to voluntarily swallow these stereotypes of the LGBTQ+ community? Hollywood has during later years been criticized by its lack of diversity, and focus on white...
