...Whether you have already decided to pursue an online degree or you are still trying to decide if it is the right option for you, paying for college might be one of your biggest concerns. If that is the case, you might be interested to know Pell Grants are available for online students. Pell Grants are used by many students each year to pay for their school. Unlike student loans, the money does not need to be repaid. If you are considering applying for a Pell Grant, there are three things you need to know. Must Be an Undergraduate While those working on graduate degrees and other higher level degrees can qualify for loans and scholarships, you only qualify for a Federal Pell Grant if you are working on either an Associates or Bachelors degree....

...These underrepresented groups are disproportionately Hispanic at about 48.5% and African-American, at about 45% (National Post-Secondary Aid Study [NPSAS] 2012 and National Center for Education Statistics [NCES] 2010). According to The Pell Institute, first-generation students most often have less academic preparation, are much less likely to receive financial support from parents, less likely to attend four year institutions, and are more likely to have multiple obligations outside of college such as family and work causing them to attend college part time. Besides these causes of lower retention rates; the largest factor lower students’ chances of persisting in college is the financial barrier as one-half of first-generation college students are from low-income families compared to only one-third of non-first-generation students (Horn & Nunez,...

Democracy adopted its present name during the elections and presidency of Andrew Jackson in the 1830s. Around the 1840s and 1850s, the party was in fight over having slavery to the western territories. Southern Democrats demanded to protect slavery in all the territories while many Northern Democrats tried to keep them out of their territories. The party split over the slavery issue in 1860 at the presidential convention in Charleston, South Carolina. B. Thesis: Democracy is important since it lets everyone to have the chance to a say or a voice in the government. With democracy, everyone is treated fairly and equal. ...the themes of these programs and see how many times that theme has been repeated in the various initiatives. If the them has been repeated a great deal, and the numbers suggest progress, then an objective truth can be reached. Some of the major themes across these diversity initiatives and frameworks are the recruitment of students of color, allocating proper financial resources, training for a more culturally sensitive student body, retaining students of color, recruiting faculty of color, expanding the ethnic studies requirement and training for students of color to deal with racism. All of these themes are repeated more than ten times in a diversity forum in 2012, and clearly show where the focus of the university should be. The importance of giving diverse students the proper resources and and preparation to succeed in college is easy to see. What is most striking is the theme of making a more culturally sensitive student body, which shows that diversity issues are not simply applicable to students or faculty of...

...factors to help better our society, why is it when we need to make cuts to help keep Texas running. This decision doesn’t make sense to the common person so why is it congress to agree so easily on these cuts. Texas is currently looking at a 27 billion short fall for the next two years, which means a 9.6 billion cut to public schools and 375,000 loosed jobs. What kind of an impact are these cuts going to have on the future of our children and society? If Texas is in the budget crisis it’s in now, how will it proceed to get any better if education is the first to be impacted? One of the first programs looking at cuts in education is the Pre-K program in Public schools. When one thinks of Pre-K, what one may consider is what kind of importance is this program provides for our children. When one thinks of what consist in the day of preschooler; typically one thinks of coloring and playing and maybe even snack. Really in reality the children in these programs are learning a lot from one another and their teachers. Most of the children in these types of programs are Hispanic (99%) and economically disadvantaged (86%), taking away or cutting the program could affect these children with being ready for public school. Being that majority of the children are Hispanic, English is either a second language or not spoken at all in the home. Pre- K program is helping provide easier transition into the public school systems for these types of children. Improper readiness for school could...

...Joel Barker's pithy saying, "Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world!" distinguishes an entrepreneur from others. An entrepreneur acts to bring visions to reality. I have longed to be one and have learnt from my reading that modern entrepreneurs have all worked to use technology for the betterment of our lives. Therefore, I decided long ago to study engineering and did not miss any opportunities to learn how the machines in our everyday life worked. In my school days, I used to listen to audio cassettes on a tape recorder. When I learnt the difference between mono and stereo recording, I thought of converting two mono recorded audio cassettes into a single stereo cassette, recorded in mono mode using the cassette's LEFT and RIGHT channels as a separate channels, to be heard in sequence, not together. To my delight, the idea worked and resulted in compacting two cassettes into a single mono cassette. With good scores in the science subjects, I could choose the engineering stream to take up for Bachelors. I chose Electronics & Telecommunication, because of its wide, interdisciplinary span and the ever increasing use of electronics in every branch of modern science, from Astrophysics to Medicine. It is a field rich with opportunities for an entrepreneur. The curriculum of University of Pune introduced me to the basics of several subjects, such as Digital Signal Processing, Integrated Circuit...

...such a low standard, Obama is setting students up for failure. For example, Emily Jensen, a teacher at Ahtanum Elementary School in Yakima, emphasized in an e-mail interview that: In WSU’s teaching program, my professors stressed the importance of producing high-quality work, because it would be a direct reflection of my work ethic as a teacher. In the end, I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and had a job months later. However, if my professors had told me I could get a good teaching job with a 2.5 GPA, I would have done the bare minimum and wouldn’t have benefited from the program” (Jensen). The essence of Jensen’s experience is that expectations influence success. With the exception of a select few, most students work hard enough to pass their classes—but not much more. Because of this, I think America’s College Promise GPA minimum should be raised to a 3.0. Some may argue that this is a bad idea, because students who perform poorly would lose funding and have to pay for their tuition until their grades improve. Some students—mainly those in the middle-class who are not financially supported by parents and those with families—cannot afford college tuition and may drop out before graduation. However, many YVCC students qualify for financial aid, Pell Grants, and scholarships that cover partial- or full-tuition costs. In reality, the rigor of higher education is not a fit for everyone. In a way, it is for the better for that reality to hit students while earning free community college,...

...College Students Working: The Choice Nexus A Review of Research Literature on College Students and Work by Tina Tuttle, with Jeff McKinney & Melanie Rago I PA S T O P I C B R I E F S College enrollments have continued on an upward climb for decades, as more and more people recognize the value of a college education, especially the tangible value of the diploma in the marketplace. The past few decades have witnessed growing diversity in higher education, but with that diversity we also see dramatic changes in how students are funding their college educations. Adult degree seekers, firstgeneration students, students of color, and students from low-income backgrounds have become a mainstay in the growing mix in college today. This new mix challenges the persistent image of the of the “traditional,” direct-from-high school, white, middle-class college student on a residential campus, who may work part time, is dependent on parents, and graduates within four years. In fact this picture represents less than 27% of college students today (Choy 2002). Today’s college students face a complex set of dilemmas about whether to attend college, where to attend, how to pay, how much to work, how many jobs to take, how to pay credit card bills and car payments, how to juggle family and children, and how to balance these competing priorities while in school. The amount of time students spend working has been of increasing concern for the educators that serve them and, in some instances...

...The United States federal deficit is continually contracting or expanding depending on how expenses paid match up to incoming revenues. A government policy which implements either expansionary or contractionary policies greatly influences the size of the deficit as well as any surpluses gained. Because deficits and surpluses are such an integral part of our economy, the way they affect almost every sector of our lives can be far reaching and long lasting. In this paper we will evaluate some general side effects of having either a surplus or a deficit and how they affect specific areas of our lives. Taxpayers If the economy is in a recession, taxpayers have a budget with minimal amount of money to spend on goods or services. The tax rates change because of the number of employed individuals working in a year. If the economy is going through an inflation period, the government has options for those extra funds. One option, if the government has run budget deficits in the past, is to use surplus funds to retire the debt accumulated from those deficits, as Mankiw discusses in his book (Hall, 2012.) Another option is for some of the money to be given back to the taxpayers for boosting the economy with purchases of merchandise for households. A third option for the government would be to direct the surplus funds toward other spending, such as improved infrastructure, new domestic programs or additional defense spending (Hall, 2012.) Future Social Security and Medicare Users Taxpayer...
