...After reading Sherman Alexie's "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" I feel very shocked. I really can't remember what I was doing when I was young. Maybe I was watching TV, playing with my friends, having a afternoon nap and so on. At the same age, he started to reading foreign language books and comic books , this phenomenon will never happen in my life. Maybe he was smart and arrogant, but without the atmoshere of his family and his pervenance spirit ,he won't became such a successful people. His father like reading books and brought them from the pawnshops and secondhand and the books were so many that were stacked in crazy piles in the bathroom, bedroom and living room. He use every moments to read books such as lunch time, in the car when his family traveled, in shopping malls and so on. He also have a goodness heart and must be very patriotic. Because he always worried about the future of the Indian children and visit schools and teach creative writing to them. what;s more, although the children refuse and resist him, he never give up to save their lives. I don' t really like the Indian thinking. They hate the smart Indian people and expected to be stupid. Like what he said in the book the Indian children were monosyllabic in front of the non-Indian teachers, but after come home they were talking about complicated stories and jokes at the dinner table. How could they do this ? To be smart is everyone want and they just want to be stupid. In comic book panel...

...Thommy Jacquet Jr English 101 2/8/12 Joy in Relationship and Family Joy is an emotion by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of processing what one desires: from the American Webster dictionary. Is life really about the 'money', the 'cash', who has the biggest gold chain or who drives the shiniest or fastest car, who sells the most albums or who has the most respect? Today happiness is viewed in many different ways. Everyone defines happiness according to their personal perspectives. Each individual describes their inner feelings in a way that can't be compared with another. Joy originally and logically means the inner state of well-being or a pleasurable or satisfying experience. It enables people to profit from their highest: thoughts, wisdom, intelligence, common sense, emotions, health, and spiritual values in life. Also joy can be anything a person finds success or good fortune in. For example, if a person enjoys reading books for fun, for their spare time so that is saying that the person finds happiness behind reading books or if a person enjoys spending time with their family so that is saying that person finds happiness being with their family. Most of the joy that we experience comes from the feeling of love. So many people look to their relationships, especially marriage to give them the joy that they cannot find on their own. Love is not enough to provide joy, then there must be many frustrated lovers in the world. The belief that love...

...“The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” How does this Sherman Alexie essay compare to the Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X essays we read earlier in the semester? What implications does Alexie invoke with his use of the Superman imagery? In comparing the three essays, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, to “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass and “Learning to Read” by Malcolm X, one immediately recognizes that all three authors place high importance on the value of reading and writing. When one has the ability to read and write, one has the ability to achieve many goals. One also has the ability to make a difference in the lives of others and society. In “Learning to Read” by Frederick...

...Joy is a 2015 American semi-biographical dramafilm, written and directed by David O. Russell and starring Jennifer Lawrence as Joy (loosely based onJoy Mangano), a self-made millionaire who created her own business empire. Mangano was a divorced mother with three children in the early 1990s when she invented the Miracle Mop and became an overnight success, after which she patented many other products, often selling on the Home Shopping Network and QVC. Joy received a wide theatrical release on December 25, 2015, and is distributed by 20th Century Fox. In 1989, Joy Mangano is a divorced mother of three, working as a booking clerk for Eastern Airlines. ...I am sitting in church, it's raining cats and dogs outside - fat ones! so I can't go home for now. Instead of seeing the glass as half empty, let's see it as half full because now I have a chance to finally write my first blog post. I'll share a few tips from my heart on being and staying happy in Jesus. * "Are any among you in trouble? They should pray..." - James 5:13 Pray; my joy begins and ends in God and I can confidently say that the joy of the Lord is truly my strength. You cannot be happy while you insist on carrying your own burdens. The Bible says that we cast our cares on the Lord. Now the way to do this is by prayer. I do not expect to be happy while my God is angry at me. So be it burdens of sin -by the way disobedience to God will snuff the joy out of you cause joy is from the Holy Spirit and He can get grieved by us when we do wrong!-, worry, anxiety, depression, name it! I will lay it at His feet and His cross and take on His yoke. I realized that if I truly want to be happy all the days of my life, then I should seek diligently to be full of all that God is. * ------------------------------------------------- "...Are any among you happy? They should sing praises." ------------------------------------------------- James 5:13 Be grateful; My heart "glows" when I appreciate someone. And it does so when am appreciated as well. Being grateful helps you appreciate and be content with what you have. A sincere thank you to God and people around you will go...

...Never Too Old for Disney Magic. I’m five years old again, waking up to the Florida air that is unique from the rest of the world. My parents dress my toddler brothers with their hats and sunscreen and then help me put on my beloved Minnie shirt and Mickey ears. I bounce throughout the room, waiting to sprint downstairs and meet Cinderella, Aurora, and Tinkerbell. Skipping, I look out the balcony of our hotel room in Orlando. My eyes shimmer, pixie dust among rosy cheeks. Cinderella’s Castle. Flash-forward eleven years, and the same bright eyes stare at the castle. There is no feeling like strolling down Main Street USA, with the buttery popcorn and ice cream wafts flooding in from all sides. Looking around, kids run back and forth with...

...'Cause everyone listens when I start to sing I'm so grateful and proud All I want is to sing it out loud So I say Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing Thanks for all the joy they're bringing Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty? What would life be? Without a song or a dance what are we? So I say thank you for the music For giving it to me Mother says I was a dancer before I could walk She says I began to sing long before I could talk And I've often wondered, how did it all start? Well, whoever it was, I'm a fan So I say Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing Thanks for all the joy they're bringing Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty? What would life be? ...mother bore me in the southern wild, And I am black, but oh my soul is white! White as an angel is the English child, But I am black, as if bereaved of light. My mother taught me underneath a tree, And, sitting down before the heat of day, She took me on her lap and kissed me, And, pointed to the east, began to say: ‘‘Look on the rising sun: there God does live, And gives His light, and gives His heat away, And flowers and trees and beasts and men receive Comfort in morning, joy in the noonday. ‘‘And we are put on earth a little space, That we may learn to bear the beams of love And these black bodies and this sunburnt face Is but a cloud, and like a shady grove. ‘‘For when our souls have learn’d the heat to bear, The cloud will vanish, we shall hear His voice, Saying, ’Come out from the grove, my love and care And round my golden tent like lambs rejoice’,’’ Thus did my mother say, and kissed me; And thus I say to little English boy. When I from black and he from white cloud free, And round the tent of God like lambs we joy I’ll shade him from the heat till he can bear To lean in joy upon our Father’s knee; And then I’ll stand and stroke his silver hair, And be like him, and he will then love me. THE CHIMNEY SWEEPER A little black thing in the snow, Crying ‘‘weep! weep!’’ in notes of woe! ‘‘Where are thy father and mother? Say!’’— ‘‘They are both gone up to the church to pray. ‘‘Because I was happy upon the heath, And smiled among the winter’s snow, They clothed me in the clothes...

...Introduction: Describe an example of someone you know who is witnessing to the “Joy of the Gospel” As I considered who, to me, witnesses to the Joy of the Gospel, I could see aspects of this joy in many people that I know and associate with. This realization fills me with hope and a sense of well-being. Choosing a single person was somewhat daunting but the answer seems clear to me: my wife Louise. Louise begins each day encountering Jesus through reading, prayer, and meditation. This joy fills her day and all that she does. Her work at the Huntsville Catholic Social Services office provides ample opportunity for her to share this joy to those who frequently come to the office without any joy; people who come to the office suffering the inequities present in our society. She greets each as a child of God, regardless of how that greet her. She welcomes opportunities to go above and beyond in serving others. Those who work with her describe her as the heart of the office. They are seeing the heart of Jesus shining through her; they are seeing goodness spreading from her. Chapter One: The Church’s Missionary Transformation Describe an opportunity you believe exists for your parish to share more fully “The Joy of the...

...ʘ In the Pacific Ocean there is an island composed by two mountains. It is as if someone had placed together two big handfuls of earth and stones in the heart of the sea. The bigger one is called Sadness and the smaller one Joy. ʘ Mythology tells us that many centuries ago Joy was larger and higher than Sadness, but, due to an earthquake, part of it fell in the sea, shaping the mountain the way we find it today. No one knows if that is really the truth. ʘ ʘ The fact is that where those two geological accidents meet live a girl named Aletheia and her grandmother. Aletheia and her grandma are like the mountains: two persons who are always together. ʘ Today the girl is shorter and smaller than her grandmother; but some day, nobody knows when, Aletheia will wake and she will be taller than her grandma. Aletheia is going to grow up and I think that when this day comes, they will still be together, just like the mountains of the island. One day this girl asked: “Grandma, who made the world?”. To what her grandmother replied, “God”. - “All of it?”. - “Yes, all of it”. - “By himself?”. - “Yes”. ʘ Aletheia left the room with that conversation on her mind. She was not convinced. She thought about this for a few days. In order to digest her thoughts she went for a walk through the island. Alone she thought. Aloud she though and she began to share her thoughts with whatever crossed her way: leaves, trees, stones, ants, crickets, etc. Had God created the...
