Blending in diction, metaphors, and other literary devices, the author details the narrator’s inevitable downfall and his eventual epiphany, which triggers a new outlook and deeper understanding of himself, society, nature, and thus the cultivation of a new character. Through gradual change of perspective, Boyle illustrates the narrator’s change from being rebellious and destructive to being appreciative of peace and convention. In the beginning of the story, the narrator depicts himself and his companions, Digby and Jeff, as rebellious teenagers who seek destruction in their lives just to look cool. “…gin in one hand and a roach clip in the other”, they took drugs and drank alcohol, listened to loud music, wrecked others’ properties, watched people make out by the lake, and “didn’t give a shit about anything” as they drove recklessly. Many novels that are read in college English courses point out the injustices, evolution, or the hypocrisy of the capitalist society –like some of the novels in this course. On the contrary, Nicholson Baker's novel seems to suggest that the post-modern world actually inspires reflection and contemplation. Instead of exposing a world of negativity, The Mezzanine, completely defies the common perception of the hyper-productive, desensitized post-modern society. The symbol of the escalator allows Baker to illustrate his take on the industrious, consumptive postmodern world. His short story “The Elephant Vanishes” and fictional novel “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle” are prime examples of why this label has been placed on Murakami’s work. Both stories revolve around a central theme that since World War II the Japanese have lost a clear sense of self. Murakami reveals this central theme by overlaying a number of supporting themes, including the split between reality and imagination, and the overbearing effect of the past on the present. The central theme is furthered through vivid symbolism, the mundane activities of everyday life, and frequent references to western culture. Both stories beg the question: Do we have our own free will to act individually in this life, or are our actions predetermined by the mass of history that comes before us? ...Diasporic Cross-Currents in Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost and Anita Rau Badami’s The Hero’s Walk HEIKE HÄRTING N HIS REVIEW of Anil’s Ghost, Todd Hoffmann describes Michael Ondaatje’s novel as a “mystery of identity” (449). Similarly, Aritha van Herk identifies “fear, unpredictability, secrecy, [and] loss” (44) as the central features of the novel and its female protagonist. Anil’s Ghost, van Herk argues, presents its readers with a “motiveless world” of terror in which “no identity is reliable, no theory waterproof” (45). Ondaatje’s novel tells the story of Anil Tessera, a Sri Lankan expatriate and forensic anthropologist working for a UN-affiliated human rights organization. Haunted by a strong sense of personal and cultural dislocation, Anil takes up an assignment in Sri Lanka, where she teams up with a local archeologist, Sarath Diyasena, to uncover evidence of the Sri Lankan government’s violations of human rights during the country’s period of acute civil war. Yet, by the end of the novel, Anil has lost the evidence that could have indicted the government and is forced to leave the country, carrying with her a feeling of guilt for her unwitting complicity in Sarath’s death.
