... Rationale of the Study A mosquito coil is mosquito-repelling incense, usually shaped into a spiral, and typically made from a dried paste of pyrethrum powder. The coil is usually held at the center of the spiral, suspending it in the air, or wedged by two pieces of fireproof nettings to allow continuous smoldering. Burning usually begins at the outer end of the spiral and progresses slowly toward the center of the spiral, producing a mosquito-repellent smoke. A typical mosquito coil can measure around 15 cm in diameter and lasts around 8 hours. Mosquito coils are widely used in Asia, Africa, and South America. Southeast Asian countries, specifically Philippines are eventually tackling problems about diseases carried by the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are the tiny insects far more nefarious than snakes or any other creature encountered in the wild. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 20,000 people die per year due to snakebite, but malaria - delivered by mosquitoes -kills more than fifty times that number of people annually. Add other mosquito-borne illnesses to the threat and suddenly humans appear to be losing the battle. (World Health Organization 2006) But with the mosquito coils, mosquito bites are now less problem in our sleep time during at night, it contributes also to the prevention campaign of diseases carried by mosquitoes. In the Philippines there are different manufacturers of quality mosquito coils, and one of them is the Greencoil...

...period (time from infection to illness) can be 2-12 days, but is usually 3-7 days. "Silent" CHIKV infections (infections without illness) do occur; but how commonly this happens is not yet known. Acute chikungunya fever typically lasts a few days to a couple of weeks, but some patients have prolonged fatigue lasting several weeks. Additionally, some patients have reported incapacitating joint pain, or arthritis which may last for weeks or months. No deaths, neuro-invasive cases, or hemorrhagic cases related to CHIKV infection have been conclusively documented in the scientific literature. CHIKV infection (whether clinical or silent) is thought to confer life-long immunity. Spread of Chikungunya CHIKV is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person infected with CHIKV. Monkeys, and possibly other wild animals, may also serve as reservoirs of the virus. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to other humans when they bite. Aedes aegypti (the yellow fever...

...made from only nucleic acid and protein, are very dangerous and in some cases can even be lethal. This essay will be focusing on two different viruses (Zika Virus and Lassa Virus), and will prove that an outbreak of Zika Virus would be more dangerous to public health in Queensland than an outbreak of Lassa Virus. This will be discussed through four different criteria: the mode of transmission, the treatment, symptoms and the mortality rate. TRANSMISSION: One way to reveal whether an outbreak of a specific virus would be dangerous to public health, would be to understand how that virus is transmitted from one person to another. Zika virus is mainly transmitted by the Aedes mosquitos....

...Zika is spread mostly by infected Aedes species mosquito, these mosquitoes come out during anytime of the day, it can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus, Zika symptoms include fevers, rashes, joint pain, muscle pain, headaches, and red eyes. Zika can cause gullain-Barre syndrome which is a sickmenss in the nervous system in which a person's own immune system harms the nerve cells which causes your body be very weak, and can also cause paralysis. For many years the mosquito-transmitted Zika virus was mainly seen in Africa and Asia, that caused flu illness and rashes on many people. Zika virus can be spread by yellow fever mosquitoes, and Asian tiger mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or medicine for Zika, and it...

...Modern society human populations at risk of disease pandemics Sandra Mankarios 42460441 Word count: 2033 The qualities in which humans in modern day society live have increased the potential risks of the transmission of pathogens and their vectors. These risks have become limitless compared to the past; the damage created now will greatly effect future generations where the damage may even be irreversible (Washer 2006). Many factors in everyday modern life contribute to the rapid spread of pathogens and their vectors, which include the advances in modern transport via the air, land and sea, the increase in population size and density, global change and climate change. These features of today assist in the introduction of new diseases and also the re-emergence of old diseases including influenza, HIV/AIDS, dengue fever, malaria, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Cholera and many others (Tatem et al. 2006). MODERN ADVANCES IN TRANSPORTATION In the past, populated establishments were isolated due to lack of efficient transport. Now in today’s modern society, the constant advances in resources and the requirement for travel has seen the travelling of individuals dramatically increased over the years. Transport systems via land, air and sea continue to develop allowing swifter mobility of passengers and goods across vast distances within shorter periods of time. Although this is exemplary of an advancing society full of promising travel and freight options, this...

...At War with the Paparazzi Benjamin Biwer 4320316 JOUR3745 (Section 001) “I can’t go to war with paparazzi” (Craig). This statement, made by Daniel Craig, unintentionally (and unknowingly) references the power struggle between celebrity spin machines and the paparazzi. In his piece, “On the Function of the United States Paparazzi: Mosquito Swarm or Watchdogs of Celebrity Image, Control, and Power”, Andrew Mendelson analyzes the function of paparazzi and the role these popular culture fixtures have on society and celebrity. Specifically, Mendelson examines the “war” between highly controlled celebrity images and candid, raw offerings provided by the paparazzi. While an argument can, and should, be made regarding privacy issues, pictures obtained by paparazzi provide a necessary checks-and-balances system to the cunning world of celebrity and entertainment (Mendelson). To this end, Mendelson’s argument that journalists (i.e. the paparazzi) should “look more deeply” into celebrities and popular culture events is completely valid. This paper will provide arguments that support Mendelson’s view of the paparazzi – first, by exploring the issues presented by celebrity-controlled personas; and second, by reinforcing the need for fact checking, as exists in political and professional realms. Mendelson provides a thought-provoking piece that challenges conventional wisdom on the paparazzi (i.e. privacy and boundary issues). The most poignant of his arguments describes the tactics the...

...damages in the pet’s organs, and is very popular in the United States. This disease can be transmitted only by a mosquito bite and is not contagious to another pet’s, not even humans. However, they can get it if they are bitten by an infected mosquito. This condition can be treated with different types of medications, but the most important is to get the knowledge about how this dangerous disease is developing and how it can affect our pet’s health. Also can destroy the dog or cat immunologic system causing the death of this same, so learning about this dangerous disease many people can get the requirements, knowledge, and practice on how to prevent and treat this illness. Heartworm Disease Canine and Feline Heartworm Disease is caused by the Filarioid Nematode Dirofilaria Immitis. The parasite can be found in warm climates worldwide and is widespread through the United States. This disease can be fatal for pets and can be develop quickly causing different symptoms that easily can be confused with any other diseases. This disease can be contracted by a mosquito bite, affect Dogs and Cats, and can be treated and prevented. First, the life cycle of Dirofilaria Immitis begins when a female mosquito bites an infected animal ingesting microfilariae (Larvae) circulating in the bloodstream. Microfilariae develop within the mosquito, and then this mosquito bites an uninfected dog or cat. The rate of development dependent on the ambient temperature the animal lives...

Effective up to 20 washes, depending on local conditions, the fendozin-rich net would kill mosquitoes and other bugs within 20 minutes after they come in contact with it, said officials. The nets are already available across the country and cost TK 650~700 [US$ 8-9] a piece. The nets meet the requirements of the World Health Organization and are "extremely safe" for humans and other mammals, said Saria Sadique, managing director of BASF Bangladesh. The country's first Long Lasting Impregnated Net [LLIN] plant, which has been set up in the industrial park, cost TK 124 million and has created jobs for 800 people. The plant owned and operated by Grameen Fabrics and Fashions will manufacture the nets under the brand name Interceptor. BASF Grameen Limited will market the product. In near future, this magic mosquito net will also be exported to a number of countries in the world. The plant can now produce up to 3,000 nets a day and its capacity would enhance in days to come...

...The question of whether global warming will have a negative impact on human health is a serious issue that will affect every living thing on the planet earth. Some believe that global warming is a serious issue that must be addressed now or the planet will have dire consequences. On the other hand, Critics believe that global warming is a normality of the earth’s atmosphere. This paper will answer the questions: who, what, why, when, and how global warming will or will not have a negative impact on human health. The research must start by describing global warming and why some scientist and researchers believe that it will have a negative impact on human health. In direct quotation of Bloice and Hallinan, 2005: The temperature of the earth’s atmosphere is influenced by the balance between the high energy ultraviolet radiation absorbed from the sun and the amount of heat radiated back into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, water, methane, and other “greenhouse gases” are the key elements that regulate the earth’s temperature. Greenhouse gases are similar to the glass in a greenhouse- they allow light to enter and warm the interior but trap radiation, which heats the inside. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere cause a buildup of heat that raises the temperature on the earth’s surface, a process called the greenhouse effect. Why do people believe that global warming will have a negative impact on human health? 1) Disease 2) Heat related deaths 3) Increases storm...

...1.1. Background Information Aedes mosquitoes are the vectors that cause the mosquito-borne disease such as Dengue fever (DF) and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF). The cases of dengue are keeping increasing from time to time and this has made it become a serious international concern. Initially, in the 1950’s only 5 countries documented dengue but up until now the dengue cases were reported in more than 100 countries (Guha –Sapi & Schimmer, 2005). Dengue can be transferred when the mosquitoes infected with one of the four dengue virus serotypes known as DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4 (WHO, 2014). There is no vaccine or any exact medication to treat dengue. In Malaysia, dengue fever cases are not something bizarre. Selangor is one of the states that had reported with high...

...not native to, similar to a pioneer. Invasive species can affect the ecosystem that they are occupying in various ways. These effects can be different depending on the specie, but they all may cause damage to the ecosystem. For example, when a blackberry bush invades a habitat, it takes space in the ground under trees and plants and takes their water. An invasive eel, however, would have different impacts on the environment compared to a blackberry bush, because it plays a different role in the environment. An invasive eel would devour the fish and make the food web unstable. Also, invasive species will often push out native species from their habitats (Toll para 3). There are thousands of different invasive species, such as the Asian tiger mosquito, which is invading the Washington area, cheat grass, which is replacing the fabled sage brush in Nevada, the Asian longhorn beetle, which is attacking maple trees in New York, and the Asian swamp eel that is invading the Everglades in Florida and may start eating up many small fish. Invasive species are everywhere, and are endangering wildlife. Invasive species cause a loss in biodiversity in the habitats they invade. When these species attack habitats, they are altering the ecosystem in the habitat, and many times this causes a decline in the native species’s populations. For example, buffel grass is invading the Sonoran Desert, which will alter the ecosystems in that desert habitat. The buffel grass invasion has a chance to “doom...

...1. Define food chain and food web A food chain only follows just one path as animals find food. eg: A hawk eats a snake, which has eaten a frog, which has eaten a grasshopper, which has eaten grass. A food web shows the many different paths plants and animals are connected. eg: A hawk might also eat a mouse, a squirrel, a frog or some other animal. 2. Digestion is the complex process of turning the food you eat into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth and cell repair needed to survive. The digestion process also involves creating waste to be eliminated. The digestive tract (or gastrointestinal tract) is a long twisting tube that starts at the mouth and ends at the anus. It is made up of a series of muscles that coordinate the movement of food and other cells that produce enzymes and hormones to aid in the breakdown of food. Along the way are three other organs that are needed for digestion: the liver, gallbladder...
