...“The Difference Between Winning and Succeeding” The idea of winning and succeeding is described differently by different people from different walks of life. In his Ted Talk, “The Difference Between Winning and Succeeding”, John Wooden makes the statement that a person can win every game of every season and not succeed due to marginal ideals placed upon a team by the school district. John Wooden challenges the idea of a person realizing that perfect grades or ideals do not exist to everyone and do not apply to everyone. He challenges the idea that God created every person in a different way with a different ability to learn and grow. Wooden earns the right to be heard through his techniques used in his talking and through the rhetorical analysis...

...KUMEYAAY PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA by Your Name (boldface) ANTH 100: Non-Western Cultures and the Western Tradition Instructor: Dr. Steven R. James Nov. 10, 2014 INTRODUCTION In my quest to study the life of the ancient California inhabitants, I visited the San Diego Museum of Man which is an anthropological museum situated in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. The museum was established in the year 1915 as a result of the Panama-California Exposition where several exhibits were displayed with ‘The Story of Man through Ages’ being the first. At the culmination of the exposition, San Diego Museum Association sought to retain the available collection and start a permanent museum. As a result, the collection was named Museum of Man in 1942 and later in 1978 as the California Museum of Man. Besides housing the history of the Kumeyaay people, who are the subject of this research paper, the history of other Native Americans from the South of California can also be studied in this place. The museum has a population of over 100000 ethnographic items, 25000 images, and a large library of books and journals. MUSEUM EXHIBIT 1) Artifact Display On the second floor of the museum, a wide variety of the historic sources can be found. Among the displayed artifacts there are models of the early man, reconstructions of the bones of hominids, cave paintings, coffins of mummies from ancient Egypt, stone carvings, and remains of the Egyptian mummy known as Lemon Grove. The culture of the people of China...

...the discovery study, released on Monday by the journal Antiquity. In the study, the international archaeology team reports digging beneath existing brick structures at the shrine, which is visited yearly by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. PHOTOGRAPH BY IRA BLOCK, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Archaeologists Robin Coningham (at left) and Kosh Prasad Acharya direct excavations within the Maya Devi Temple. The excavations showed that older wooden structures lay beneath the walls of the later brick Buddhist shrine. The layout of that more recent shrine duplicates the layout of the earlier wooden structures, pointing to a continuity of Buddhist worship at the site, Coningham says. "The big debate has been about when the Buddha lived and now we have a shrine structure pointing to the sixth century B.C.," Coningham says. The team used two kinds of scientific dating to find the age of the early shrine. Outside scholars applauded the discovery but cautioned against too hastily accepting the site as the oldest discovered Buddhist shrine without more analysis. "Archaeologists love claiming that they have found the earliest or the oldest of something," says archaeologist Ruth Young of the United Kingdom's University of Leicester in an email message. The Buddha's Birthplace Buddhism is one of the...

...Kyle Pignatiello Dr. Titlebaum HSS 358 4 December 2013 Coaches Perspective: Preparing a Team for Success In a world full of coaching changes, conference realignments, and program violations, there are many reasons why a team can be good one year but have a problem sustaining that success in the long term. Maintaining success in college football is difficult because there are many factors that could affect a team. New coaches get hired and existing ones get fired. With each coaching change, there is a chance for change in leadership, which in return could make a program worse or in some cases better. Also, college kids have to deal with their classes and have other off-field distractions to handle. This goes along with the demands that football puts on them. This makes one think whether it is even possible to have sustained success, and if so, such then leads to the question of what is needed to have continued success in college football? To start, one can look at successful programs that have had the most wins. When discussing wins and losses in recent years, what comes to mind is the Southeastern Conference and Alabama Crimson Tide in particular. The SEC has won the last seven national championships, and Alabama has won three of the last four. But, one asks “Is winning football games the only thing that should determine success?” What about the academics and the team’s graduation rate? Those should both be vital parts of “success.” Sadly, coaches are judged and evaluated...

...Philippines is the Top 1 among the coconut producing countries. For coconut is abundant in our country, it is popular for its culinary purposes, commercial, industrial, and household uses, and medical applications. Coconut shells with husks are used to buff wooden floors, making it clean and shiny (free from dusts). Here in the Philippines, it is known as “bunot”. The husk and shells can be used for fuel and are a source of charcoal. Coconut shells/husks are usually left around and are considered wastes besides making them into husks. To get benefits from them, by a primitive process, they can be produced to charcoal which can be an alternative fuel especially for cooking. B. Statement of the Problem The study aims to produce charcoal using coconut (Cocos nucifera) fibers. Specifically, it seeks to find answers for the following questions: 1. How much charcoal can be produced from the coconut fibers? 2. How long is the coal ember of the Coconut Fibers Charcoal? 3. Is there a significant difference between the Coconut Fibers Charcoal and the commercially made charcoal in terms of the duration of coal ember and cost analysis? C. Significance of the Study Charcoal is already being used by people nowadays for...

...soil encourages ‘strong capillary action,’ Stephenson said, which draws the salty water to the surface and into the porous sandstone foundations of the monuments. The dry desert heat then causes the water in the stones to evaporate, leaving behind ‘salt crystals that cause the sandstone to split, flake, and crack,’ Stephenson said” (Cohen, 2002). There are some solutions that may be able to help solve this problem. These include the installation of wells, replacing foundation stones with less porous material, and creating a water barrier by injecting chemical sealant between structures and the soil. Unfortunately these solutions do not come cheap and can potentially damage the monument (Cohen, 2002). The complex is visited by thousands of people each year. “In 2008, the SCA organized a major conservation effort carried out by an all-Egyptian team” (Hawass, 2009). Tackling the project were appointed archaeologists, architects, and restorers. To be able to find the threatening forces of the environment a soil mechanic Dr. Hassan Fahmy was hired to be a part of the team. Understanding the monument is a crucial part to the restoration of this project, and that it is where the expertise of an archaeologist becomes beneficial to restoring the pyramid. “The most important component on the outside of the pyramid was identifying and correcting areas of structural weakness where stones have fallen or weathered away or been removed today” (Hawass, 2009). Hollows and overhangs were left from...

...the Cultural Divide Through Fictional Analysis Throughout human history, peoples have invaded one another, both through taking land and permeating each other’s traditions with their cultures. With the development of colonialism and world wars in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this became more and more common- but was met with backlash from native people and those whose lives were drastically changed. In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe illustrates the tensions between European colonizers and Nigerian indigenous people by following the story of Okonkwo, a strong man in the Umuofian tribe . Julie Otsuka allows the reader to follow the story of a Japanese boy being displaced in an internment camp during the second World War in her piece “When the Emperor Was Divine”. Okonkwo’s violent reaction to European culture and the boy’s silent yearning for his...

...at approximately 5:13 a.m., a super powerful earthquake that lasted for about 45 to 60 seconds struck San Francisco, California. The earthquake that hit the town was so strong, that people all along the West Coast of the U.S felt it; the areas along the coast included Oregon to Los Angeles, California and east into the state of Nevada. Unfortunately, since the earthquake was an 8.3 on the Richter scale more than 3,000 people were killed, while 225,000 people were left homeless. Thousands of people were left homeless after the earthquake disrupted about 12,000 square miles of land. It has been said that one of the reasons why the 1906 earthquake caused so much damage, was that parts of San Francisco were built on land that was once the seabed of the San Francisco Bay. Thus, a majority of the land in San Francisco should have never been built on, since the building does not have the proper ground support. Reference #2: Date Accessed: 3/18/2015 Richard, Hansen Barton., and Gladys C. Hansen. 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Charleston: South Carolina, 2013. Print. In the 1906 earthquake, the buildings that were damaged the most had wooden structures that were built on alluvial soil or landfill. In addition, because the buildings had weak foundations, those killed in the earthquake were in wooden structures, not brick. Surprisingly, the buildings that were well built with brick, stood up very well to this disastrous earthquake; many buildings of which are actually still standing...
