...speaker” (661-664). In the first video clip of Drunken History: Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks, there is a use of pathos strategy. By using a non-threating “tired Rosa Parks” they drew sympathy from the people to persuade them for a boycott which in turn could ultimately change the law (2:30-2:36). Sympathy like stated in Reading the world: Ideas that matter is “when we see victims of injustice, economic hardship, crime, war, or disaster, we sympathize and want to help” (662). Therefore, by it being an un-theatrical Rosa Parks and not Claudette Colvin, some outspoken...

...A Fool's Walkthrough Enlightened Bullshit ~ A bizarre exercise in arithmetic by an illiterate Revision 5 (The second to be published) (For the few souls that follow the development - go to the bottom red caption of “current revision board” it’s where all the new stuff is logged if you don’t want to go through it all again) Intro Yes this is an intentional attempt of creating a profound appearance only to sucker you into old BS yet again. Frankly there’s little else going on lately that hasn’t to do with that. If I were to have a disclaimer it would probably be larger than what I have to say. • • In short this material is the log of my transition from reality to actuality. I’ve rounded it up to be a fine bullshit dissolver as well - considering we are swamped in BS as it is, what I’m getting at is quite the rare commodity. Would that I could, flip the script and get you a hot seat on some fascinating new experience limited only by imagination, but alas we are here making sense of the good old bullshit that is clogging our everyday lives. Whatever you deem to be relevant is directly tied into it. Every topic or endeavour you can think of is covered with a thick armoured wall of bullshit and the few exceptions just affirm the rule. You can pretend it doesn’t exist or write it off as a topic you dislike and subsequently avoid. However you and i (yes not capital letter) and everyone intimately know the benefits of lying and extreme senselessness. However it seems the detrimental...

...the world. For this reason I was very excited to see that we as a class would have the opportunity to speak with a set of actual international students who know how business is done internationally, specifically in Germany. Of all of the interesting information I learned from the Q and A session, I believe that the most valuable would be Germany’s directness, the value of honesty, and the fact that it can often be much harder to break the ice with Germans. The first tip that I would try to convey to a student interested in doing business in Germany would be that the German people are very direct. The MBA students gave an example of an interaction between a student and a professor. If a student were to be asked a question in class that they didn’t know in America, he said that the student would likely try to “bullshit” his way out of it (Bruggemann, Spindler). This differs vastly in Germany due to their directness. Rather than try to talk themselves out of the question, they would be direct with their professor and admit that they did not know the answer. This type of distinction would be extremely helpful to an American traveling to Germany. Secondly, it is important to note that Germans value honesty. “Germans do not like surprises. Sudden changes in business transactions, even if they may improve the outcome, are unwelcome” (“Business Etiquette”). Honesty goes hand in hand with directness as noted previously. Business is a very serious issue in Germany and...

...So, this is what led me to the little rant below... Most of the aforementioned garbage comes in the form of plastic, and no, not a single blob of plastic. There are roughly 2 trillion pieces of plastic in just this one area (this doesn't account for the rest of the plastic in the ocean). So, some of you might be asking why the garbage forms into patches as the one mentioned above. The answer is simple: Gyres Ocean Gyres Source--License: Public Domain The gyres are the circles made by the arrows. The arrows represent ocean currents driven by the Coriolis Effect. The Coriolis Effect deflects winds and currents clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere. But how do gyres cause the patches? When we (shitty humans) improperly dispose of waste, it tends to end up in the ocean. Once it is in the ocean in...

...writing of this journal is indeed insignificant or pathetic, but I’ve decided after all this time to begin writing something meaningful. Of course, the whole objective of this self-reflection is to simply reinforce my own feelings regarding some of the experiences in this past. Most importantly, there will not be any editing for spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes, for I want this journal to be a continuously flowing train of thoughts, or stream of consciousness as they call it in IB English, not some SAT writing or contents full of bullshit. This journal, although written on the day of Christmas, serves no particularly meaningful celebration of a particular event, and is simply inspired by a moment of epiphany upon reading the novel “The Wars” by Timothy Findley. Like I’ve said before, it is but a truthful reflection and self discovery that serve to preserve a state of experience or emotions in my infinitivally miniscule cycle of life that seemed nonetheless to be quite meaningless. Truth be told, I could probably continue writing like this for hours, if not days. (Days was an exaggeration by the way, for I will probably be playing a round of league of legends before then, and did I say I just lost a ranked game this morning too?...) But it’s quite strange, normally I’d be angry at the fact that I’ve lost a game that dropped my elo by 37, but really, does it even matter at all? To some extent, I have to agree that I was feeling exceptionally existential this morning. Although...

...or to take down the competition a couple of notches. With advances in software development came lawsuits between developers for patents on processes of code, some are legitimate but many are so generalist that anyone with skill attempting to develop in the same language cannot avoid violating the patent. If the product resulting from this is highly successful then it is likely that the company with the patent, of which they sometimes own thousands of patents, will sue over the rights for awards sometimes in the millions of dollars. Many of these lawsuits are held in Eastern Texas because of the favorable outcome likely to the patent holder. On top of the cost to the successful developer there is also the public reputation loss to take into account. Would you buy a product if you believed that that product was stolen intellectual property? Thus in one blow large companies take aim as much for the other companies reputation with bad press as it does for money. Sometimes the company holding the patent did not even develop the product that he patent is covering. One such battle is currently being fought. Oracle is suing Google for patent violations that they acquired by purchasing Sun. Prior to this recent purchase Oracle had very little to do with Java, the programming language that the patent violation are for. While this is not what is commonly known as patent trolling, where a small company sues a large company primarily for revenue using a frivolous patent, it is what I believe...

...I am just so disappointed with SOME of the reactions I've read regarding baekhyun & taeyeon's relationship. Everyone who thinks that these idols deliberately hurt them should GROW THE FUCK UP. Yes, you have the right to feel heartbroken over what transpired. Yes, you also have the right to share what you feel on every fucking social media platform there is; but you have no freaking right to dictate as to whether their choices are wrong or right. These two people are normal human beings who deserve to date anyone they want. They have the right to use their OWN sns accounts for whatever purpose they want. Feeling sad or disappointed is okay but cursing their relationship and their choices is not. Why are people being so fucking possessive? Spare me the bullshit story that you "invested everything on them" or that "they need to respect you out of everything you've done for them". All I'm hearing is that you think you deserve to curse at them and tell them that what they're doing is wrong because your money puts food on their table. You know what, my mother works for a real estate company that sells millions of property to people every year. She has the obligation to please her customers with regards to the houses she sells them and their money allows us to live in comfort, but if they feel offended by her personal life choices (i.e. Whatever she posts on her facebook account or who she decides to date) then she doesn't have any obligation to apologize or cater to the desires of...

...Community Project Teri Patterson Springfield College: Puerto Rico Analysis & Perspectives November 4, 2012 Introduction This paper will explore a proposed community project for the city of Hartford, CT. The project will be developed in coordination with the Connecticut Department of Correction and a community provider. The projects main goal is to provide a safe living environment for Latino gang members in the community once they discharge from prison. Agencies The major agency being targeted for this community project is the Connecticut Department of Correction. The CT DOC’s mission statement is as follows. “The Department of Correction shall protect the public, protect staff, and provide safe, secure, and humane supervision of offenders with opportunities that support restitution, rehabilitation and successful community reintegration.” The project is focused on the successful reintegration of offenders to the community. There was a recent report in the Hartford Courant that stated that 80% of adult males in the state of CT have been recidivists between 2005 and 2010. This number is staggering and every effort should be taken by both the department and community agencies to help this number to decrease. This project will focus on providing an opportunity for inmates in DOC who have been identified as having an affiliation with a primarily Latin gang such as the Latin Kings or Los Solidos. The inmates chosen for the program will have...

...Derek, trying to reform himself and save his brother after living a life consumed by violence and bigotry. The story unfolds through the eyes of Danny Vineyard (Edward Furlong), who idolizes his older brother Derek (Edward Norton). Raging for revenge over the murder of their firefighter father, Derek ends up finding himself transformed by a philosophy of hate. His incendiary actions ultimately lead to a murder and a prison sentence for himself. Racism, prevalent throughout the world and of course, the film American History X, affects the way one thinks about others. A key element of this film, other than racism of course, is that the activist Majorities can never be trusted. A lot of ruthless scenes of violence were included in the film, which for some may have increased its effectualness and made it appear more real. Manipulation is also key in American History X where the main characters in this film are young, bright, and filled with potential, yet they still somehow manage to be recruited into the neo-nazi/skinhead movement. The message is that any person, no matter how normal, can quickly cross the line from being civil into being consumed by racial fanaticism, violence and hatred. The scene with Derek's father at the dinner table, as described in Danny's essay, is an important part to the film. Derek and Danny are now shown to have been normal boys, the complete opposite of the skinheads they become later on. They are having dinner and Derek is telling his dad...

...Can you believe this is issue number 4? Again another ‘edible report.’ This one I’m digging into ‘cannabis infused medicinal chocolate.’ Yummy! As it should be. Word is not everyone gets it right. Good news, for the company Dixie Elixirs (and Edibles) sure has. Matter of fact I didn’t taste anything but well-made chocolate. Oh, and peppermint. Good for the tummy, which rhythms with ‘yummy, and something every medical marijuana licensed person, who are certainly not dummies, would be interested in. At least I was. Right off the bat, I knew that this edible was stronger than what I had previously done. I looked real forward to trying it out, but at the same time wanted to keep safe. Fact is, the THC level found in this delicious dark chocolate...

...I have lived with my grandmother for nine years and I have always seen her as my friend as well as my family, so talking to her comes easy for me. However, my speech differs from when I talk to her than when I speak to friends. I noticed this one day when I caught myself speaking differently while I was talking to my grandmother. I realized that I was a part of two language communities, one being my grandmother and myself which is more formal and respectful, and the other being my friends and myself which is intimate and carefree. Between my grandmother and I there is a 47 year difference which is a huge generation gap. Usually that causes communication issues however, I find it easy because I respect her enough to use her generations’ language. I use proper grammar, no slang, and absolutely no curse words which causes a formal and respectful. In “Speech Communities”, Paul Roberts has a section called “The Class as a Speech Communities” where he discusses how the younger generation polishes up their language to talk to the older generation. One example Paul Roberts uses is changing ain’t to am not, which I relate to because I do it all the time. When I use ain’t around my grandmother two things could happen, one being I get the “Ain’t is not a word” speech, or I get called an improper younger lady. So I...

...and then the Supreme Court rules that your legislation is legal than great things can come form a president’s time in office. A large portion of President Obama’s time as a leader of the nation has been spent opposing views of the republican controlled congress. Harry Truman had much of that same difficulty during his tenure. It is hard to look at the past and see the truth but after Truman’s Honey Moon phase of his relationship with congress he had difficulties dealing with the republicans there just like Obama. Truman was quoted as saying “Republicans in Washington have a habit of becoming curiously deaf to the voice of the people” in referring to Republican leaders in Washington (McCullough, p. 661). Obama would most likely agree to this. After a take over of the majority in 2011 Obama has not had significant legislation pass through congress like he did during the first part of his presidency. The Affordable Health Care Act would not have passed if it was being voted on past...

...One does not need a God to be a good person ITT Technical Institute EN 1420 Jennifer Cordelier July 30, 2013 One does not need a god to be a good person Throughout time the question of “does God exist?” has always been around. In the dark ages one would be cast out for doubting the all great and powerful. The religious community maintains that, “God and organized religion serve as a moral compass for society”(Buckley 2008). On the other hand atheists (someone who does not believe there is a God) maintain the belief that one does not need a God for guidance or fear of persecution to maintain a moral lifestyle. Religion is blasted into the face of all Americans daily with holidays such as Christmas and Easter. One may choose not to participate in these holidays but most people do regardless of faith. The pledge of allegiance is recited in schools without any question of what religion or denomination someone is. People can raise their children the way they like thanks to the first amendment and religion in the home is not necessary to the beneficial upbringing of a child. You do not need a God to be a good person. There are many Religions in the world with many different Gods. The Hindu believe in karma, the belief that what you do to others will come back to you. That is a great start but that is only because if you are generally a bad person (religious or not) you will have consequences to your actions. Therefore Karma states and action of doing wrong will bring you...

...locations that aren’t to be that climate, such as Antarctica and the melting glaciers, or snow in the desert, it can harm the animals that live there and will harm our planet. I think that some people disagree because they don’t want to face the facts that our planet is changing drastically due to our actions, such as pollution to the air, land, and water. In the article 5 Scientific Reasons That Global Warming Isn’t Happening, by John Hawkins, he argues that global warming is mainly due to scientific reasons, not mankind. He says that there hasn’t been any global warming since 1997, and that the temperature of the planet has essentially been flat for 17 years. Following this statement, he says that the planet was cooling from 1940-1975, meaning that a 17 year pause is necessary to follow that. Hawkins believes that there are no scientific reasoning that global warming is caused by man. He says that over 31,000 scientists have signed on to a petition saying that humans aren’t causing global warming. He also says that Artic ice is up 50% since 2012, meaning that the Artic area has more ice, rather than it all melting away because of global warming. He states that predictions of global warming have already been proven wrong. He believes that global warming is a scientific issue, not a manmade issue. He adds that Al Gore said that if global warming were true, then all Artic ice would be gone by now, and James Hansen predicted that New York would be way under water if global warming...
