...MBA – Management and Strategy E-Business QRT2 Task 1 February 13, 2014 1. Viability of Product or Service: Horsepower Towing is a sole proprietorship business established by Tyler Loveridge in the early 2000’s in Lehi, Utah. Horsepower offers a variety of services including towing, law enforcement, truck maintenance, and trucking. Horsepower started out as a single truck towing service and has steadily grown into various services to the company it is today. Horsepower began expanding its towing capabilities shortly following inception to include contracting out towing for law enforcement. This included, but was not limited to DUIs, accidents, and suspended licenses. In 2010, Horsepower continued its growth and set up a division for long-haul trucking. Because of its now diverse product and service offering, Horsepower can greatly benefit from developing a website and gaining a much stronger online presence. Currently, Horsepower Towing does not have an official website. Most of the contact information can be found online by a general Google search, but no website with offerings, testimonials, or other valuable information exists. Horsepower will see a significant increase in interest throughout the area because not only are they in an industry where technology does not have a strong presence, but also the general population is using technology more and more to find business. Also by going online, Horsepower can become a more recognized brand and have much more...

...defective fuel system design led to the debate of many issues, most centering around the use by Ford of a cost-benefit analysis and the ethics surrounding its decision not to upgrade the fuel system based on this analysis. ISSUE Should a risk/benefit analysis be used in situations where a defect in design or manufacturing could lead to death or seriously bodily harm, such as in the Ford Pinto situation? RULE There are arguments both for and against such an analysis. It is an economically efficient method which has been accepted by courts for numerous years, however, juries may not always agree, so companies should take this into account. ANALYSIS Although Ford had access to a new design which would decrease the possibility of the Ford Pinto from exploding, the company chose not to implement the design, which would have cost $11 per car, even though it had done an analysis showing that the new design would result in 180 less deaths. The company defended itself on the grounds that it used the accepted risk/benefit analysis to determine if the monetary costs of making the change were greater than the societal benefit. Based on the numbers Ford used, the cost would have been $137 million versus the $49.5 million price tag put on the deaths, injuries, and car damages, and thus Ford felt justified not implementing the design change. This risk/benefit analysis was created out of the development of product liability, culminating at Judge Learned Hand's BPL formula, where if...

...Evolution Conclusions References LITERATURE REVIEW Field Level Search Definitions THE TUGS It is a vessel between 80’ and 120’ in length and of 750 to 4,000 horsepower. It may be single screw or twin screw. It may have a Kort nozzle, and may even have flanking rudders. However, there is one sure way you can tell if it is a harbor tug:The mast will be bent and the visor around the wheelhouse will be dented. The description that the captain gave was accurate enough, eventhough it was very general. Most harbor tugs would fall into this range of characteristics and his reference to the bent mast and dented visor is also accurate. These battle scars are the inevitable consequence of working in close quarters situations. Most tugs are intended for general towing service, but appearance of some may indicate a specialized service for which they were originally intended of for which they were once employed.Railroad tugs have high pilothouses to give visibility over the loaded car floats.Canal boats have low wheelhouses and short stacks to enable them to pass freely under low bridges.tugs designed for shipwork have narrow wheelhouses and masts that can be lowered easily to avoid damage when working under the flare of the ship’s bow or overhang at its stern. However, the need for tugs to do shipwork increased in recent years, and it is not unusual to see tugs built for different services working side by side while docking ships. As the tug captain quoted above implied, the tugs...

...INTRODUCTION An exactly analysis of the landing gear, as designed on modern aircraft’s, is necessary to understand the construction and systems of the landing gear of the Airbus A320. Operation of the landing gear is made possible through extension/retraction, steering, braking and damping systems. In order to maintain the safety of the aircraft, the design of the landing is satisfied to the legislation of the European Aviation Safety Agency . With the knowledge of the landing gear construction of the Airbus A320, the forces on the construction calculated during different flight phases. In these flight phases the aircraft endures several forces. The materials that are used depends on the forces at the aircraft . Then, with a good insight of the A320’s landing gear I’m able to provide an in detail overview of the common faults and problems of the A320’s landing gear. These faults and problems have consequences for the aircrafts airworthiness. Change in the aircraft’s airworthiness requires maintenance with inevitable costs for the airline . The used main sources, serve as information to learn how the landing gear of the Airbus A320 operates. Literature review The Airbus A320 family consists of short- to medium-range, narrow-body, commercial passenger jet airliners manufactured by Airbus. The family includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321, and the ACJ business jet. Final assembly of the family in Europe takes place in Toulouse, France, and Hamburg, Germany. Since 2009...

...SIMILITUDE AND DIMENSION ANALYSIS DEFINITION AND USES OF SIMILITUDE • Similitude means similarity • it impossible to determine all the essential facts for a given fluid flow by pure theory alone • we must often depend on experimental investigations. • we can greatly reduce the number of tests needed by systematically using dimensional analysis and the laws of similitude or similarity. • For these enable us to apply test data to other cases than those observed. • we can obtain valuable results at a minimum cost from tests made with small-scale models of the full-size apparatus. The laws of similitude enable us to predict the performance of the prototype, which means the full-size device, from tests made with the model. for example, we might study the flow in a carburetor in a very large model. • A few examples of where we have used models are – ships in towing basins, – airplanes in wind tunnels, – hydraulic turbines, – centrifugal pumps, – spillways of dams, – river channels and the study of such phenomena as the action of waves and tides on beaches, – soil erosion and – transport of sediment. GEOMETRIC SIMILARITY • geometric similarity means that the model and its prototype have identical shapes but differ only in size. • the flow patterns must be geometrically similar. If subscripts p and m denote prototype and model, respectively, we define the length scale ratios as the ratio of the linear dimensions of the prototype to the corresponding dimensions in the model. = ...

...10th International Conference on Stability of Ships and Ocean Vehicles 181 A PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINING A GM LIMIT CURVE BASED ON AN ALTERNATIVE MODEL TEST AND NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS Adam Larsson, Det Norske Veritas Adam.Larsson@dnv.com Gustavo Ribbe, Det Norske Veritas Gustavo.Ribbe@dnv.com Anna-Lea Routi, STX Finland Cruise Oy Anna-Lea.Routi@stxeurope.com ABSTRACT This paper presents an alternative approach of the Weather Criterion (IMO Res. A.749(18) Chapter 3.2) and the Alternative Assessment of the Weather Criterion (MSC.1/Circ.1200 & MSC.1/Circ.1227). A short study of first principle model tests performed in irregular waves for a very large passenger cruise ship design is carried out. Following this study, a calculation procedure for determining a Weather Criterion GM limit curve is based on the results from the model tests in combination with numerical simulations. The applicability of the Weather Criterion is discussed for the cruise ship design based on the new model tests and the results from the numerical simulations, confirming that the criterion is not the limiting requirement for the examined ship design. Proposals for instructions are presented in order to improve accuracy of model test results and facilitate the possibility to derive limiting GM values based on model tests. ...docks. Directly upon their arrival to the Port they realized the ship was loaded and ready to leave for California immediately. The ship was to travel along the Prince William Sound, which was a common oil hauling route during the time of the incident. When the ship was traveling on its route, Pilot Hazelwood decided to go to quarters for a few hours of sleep. The absence of Pilot Hazelwood left Pilot Murphy alone to operate the ship, strictly against company policy. According to policy two pilots are to be on the bridge at all times while the ship is moving. Murphy finally called Hazelwood back to the deck to help pilot the ship after a two hour break. At this time the decision was made to increase speed since the tugboat was no longer towing the ship through the narrow waterway. Captain Hazelwood departed the deck once again leaving another Pilot by the name of Third Mate Cousin to operate the ship independently. While navigating through the Bligh Reef, Third Mate Cousin made an abrupt movement causing the ship to slam into an iceberg. The ship hit the iceberg at approximately 12:04 AM on March 24th, 1989. The Valdez spilled over 10 million gallons of oil into the Prince William (Oil Spill Facts, 1990). As of today there is still...

... The problem lies with the technology. Nobody can claim that these technologies will never fail. Due to mechanical fault, poor maintenance, overuse, overage, misuse etc these failures occur. Though we are aware of these and may take preventive and reactive measures to avoid those situations but these failures are still day-to-day phenomena. Think about a situation – where your personal vehicle becomes out of order on the highway in a remote place. If so, what is the remedy? There are some arrangements by the Government. However, that could not earn the faith of the public. Thus, in our case, this aspect is still remaining uncared. The astute investors could have identified the need of assistance in such situation in many countries. The effort of our new service oriented firm Safejourney is to care these aspects. The purpose of this plan is to analyze the strategic and situational aspect of the firm and focus market product, marketing mix and thereby project a detailed marketing plan of the firm. The scope of this plan will be limited to the following: • Concept Development Process • Company Description • Strategic Analysis • Situation Analysis • Market Product Focus...

...satisfaction. The “service-dominant logic” focuses on the firm and the customer co creating value, as defined by the customer. Achieving this orientation requires firms to understand which components of the service concept are most important to different subsets of customers. However, research on the relative importance to customers of core and peripheral service components has produced mixed results. The results show that these factors indeed influence Attribute—Performance—Satisfaction Relationship The present study investigates this relationship for salespeople in a business he theoretical justification for a positive impact of salespeople’s job satisfaction on customer satisfaction is based on the concept of emotional contagion. The analysis is based on a dyadic data set that involves judgments provided by salespeople and their customers collected across multiple manufacturing and services industries. Results indicate the presence of a positive relationship between salespeople’s job satisfaction and customer satisfaction. Furthermore, the relationship between salespeople’s job satisfaction and customer satisfaction is found to be particularly strong in the case of high frequency of customer interaction, high intensity of customer integration into the value-creating process, and high product/service innovativeness. 2. There are two methodology changes (or new features) in the current report - induced and indirect related jobs and a new single measure of the total economic activity. Although other ports are using this enhanced methodology, the MPA chooses not to include them when speaking of the Port’s impacts for the following reasons: • In previous comprehensive studies, only the number of direct related jobs was measured. In the January 2008 study, the related impacts measure the jobs, personal income, and associated state and local taxes that occur at each stage of production of exports or consumption/use of imported cargo. This includes induced and indirect related jobs that are supported by the direct related jobs. The new change in methodology in the current study concerning total related jobs provides a very comprehensive and extremely broad view of the economic impact of the cargo moving via...

...gone down the drain since you would now have to start all over again in order to buy a new house. But then imagine not having to lose it all. Imagine having the option to call someone who can provide you with a large part of the money necessary to rebuild your house, as this was part of a financial agreement in case of such emergencies. What a relief! This is the essence of insurance. Insurance is a financial security that offers reimbursement for assessed risks that end up actually happening. In exchange for such coverage, the insured individual has to pay a regular premium. Though this reimbursement won’t bring back the individual’s burnt-down house or stolen car, it does offer options and choices with regards to dealing with the situation. It gives the individual peace of mind in knowing that should any danger arise, there will always be a way to overcome it. Without insurance, all loses sustained become unrecoverable, the owner loses it all, and has to replace it using more money from his or her own pocket. However, with insurance, this lose is less painful. The insurance company will pay for a large part of the loss. Though this concept of insurance is pretty straight-forward, it can seem pretty challenging to different people. As a consequence, it is...
