The author emphasized that “school systems have contributed to massive ignorance by issuing un-earned grades over a period of some 20 years.” (Singleton) There are no evidence to support this theory in his essay, no statistics, and no research. This is his clear demonstration of prejudice. He does not make mention that over the years the focus have moved from teaching students the basics of education to focusing on scholastic tests. Teachers are pressured to ensure students pass F-Cat and whatever other state tests are out there so they can get more money for the schools. In some cases those test score ensure particular school teachers pay raise. Students got lost somewhere in the process and richer neighborhoods became the target of school success. Parents who can afford private education took their children out of public schools and parents who could not afford to do the same gave up. Over the years schools have become the target of whatever politicians deem important. For instance school budget has decreased, classes have been scaled down and the schools in turn have become overcrowded. With over 30 students in the first grade which by the way is one of the most critical point in a child’s development and one teacher to handle those five year olds what is the learning curve? Give five year olds F’s so that they can start out thinking of themselves as failures – wrong approach.
