...CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS GCE Advanced Level MARK SCHEME for the May/June 2014 series 9699 SOCIOLOGY 9699/33 Paper 3 (Social Inequality and Opportunity), maximum raw mark 75 This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and candidates, to indicate the requirements of the examination. It shows the basis on which Examiners were instructed to award marks. It does not indicate the details of the discussions that took place at an Examiners’ meeting before marking began, which would have considered the acceptability of alternative answers. Mark schemes should be read in conjunction with the question paper and the Principal Examiner Report for Teachers. Cambridge will not enter into discussions about these mark schemes. Cambridge is publishing the mark schemes for the May/June 2014 series for most IGCSE, GCE Advanced Level and Advanced Subsidiary Level components and some Ordinary Level components. Page 2 1 Mark Scheme GCE A LEVEL – May/June 2014 Syllabus 9699 Paper 33 (a) Explain how the achievement of pupils may be influenced by pupil sub-cultures. [9] 0–4 A few general observations about pupils’ educational achievement, with no direct links to the question, would be worth 1 or 2 marks. A basic account of what is meant by pupil sub-culture, with no further development in relation to the question, would be placed in the higher part of the band. 5–9 Lower in the band, answers are likely to provide a basic...

...My father, like most parents perhaps, had always been of the opinion that I should choose to study Medicine. Nevertheless, despite his relentless efforts and persuasion, he had to concede defeat in the end and embrace the choices I've made regarding my future career when he realised how passionate I do feel about the field of pharmaceutical studies. My desire to achieve a pharmaceutical studies based degree at university level has been simmering since I started studying A-level sciences. I enjoy all aspects of my A-level Chemistry from the experimental, to learning about the environmental impact and the medicinal influence that Chemistry can have in terms of research and development of drugs. My long term goal is to pursue a career in the Pharmaceutical field and studying Chemistry has broadened my sphere and heightened my aptitude for research material beyond the chemistry specification. I am an avid reader of Chemistry World, particularly articles based on nanotechnology and drug delivery. I appreciate the link between drug development and patient care, and regularly follow recent developments within the National Health Service. I find it very useful and informative to read articles published by distinguished institutions such as the National Institute for Clinical Excellence which strive to maintain a balance between the need of destitute patients and government expenditure. I have developed many key skills through studying Chemistry, Maths and Biology at A-levels....

...1. Risk: UCA carries the risk of the cost/price uncertainty because UCA is an action that allows the contractor to start work before prices are agreed upon. Mitigation: The “Price ceiling,” limitation at DFARS 217.7404-2 mitigates this risk by incorporating a not-to-exceed price for the firm fixed price or not-to-exceed ceiling fee for the cost reimbursement type contract in the UCA. 2. Risk: Risk associated with performance exists because all contract terms and specifications are not agreed upon under UCA in which the UCA possesses the potential risk that can increase the risk level of performance. There is only one potential contractor who may be possessed the ability and skills to develop a prototype within 90 days. Thus, the risk would...

...Financial Time Series Analysis Jiajing Sun University of Chinese Academy of Sciences 22 September 2013 J. Sun (UCAS) ARMA(1) 22 September 2013 1 / 23 Review As pointed out in the last week, the objective of studying …nancial time series analysis is to predict future values of some …nancial variable. This objective is achieved by following methodology based on: 1 2 3 4 Model Speci…cation; Model Estimation; Model Validation; Forecasting (or prediction) Note: The model to be used for forecasting is in fact estimated from history, i.e. data from the past is used to make probabilistic statements about future values. J. Sun (UCAS) ARMA(1) 22 September 2013 2 / 23 Stationarity Historical values are used to identify the dynamic properties of the time series (relationship between current and past values) and these are used to forecast the future. A critical assumption behind the methodology that we develop …rst in this course is that such dynamics do not change over time. In a heuristic sense, we require the future to be like the past in a probabilistic sense. This requirement is formalized by the concept of stationarity. J. Sun (UCAS) ARMA(1) 22 September 2013 3 / 23 Stationarity Strict Stationarity A time series Y is strictly stationary if its probabilistic distribution does not change over time. That is, for any k, the joint distribution of (Yt , Yt 1 , ..., Yt k +1 ) does not depend on t. In other words, the joint...
