Chapter-1
Introduction

A decade back, mobile phone was considered a luxury. But today, it is a necessary tool for communication, even for the students. Students of NITK vary in terms of parental income, interest, age, attitude, place of domicile, gender. They use mobile phone for information, entertainment and to stay connected with their family and friends. For some students mobile phone is also a fashion-oriented product and the use of mobile phone is directly affected by the change in prevailing fashion. The present study was undertaken keeping in view the above factors.

The study of applications of mobile phones by students of NITK was conducted with the following objectives:

1. To study the purposes for which Students of NITK use Mobile phones 2. To study the inclination of students towards specific Applications supported in Mobile Phones 3. To study the relationship between gender, class of study ( B Tech/M Tech/ Ph D/MBA etc) and the extent of usage of mobile phones.

Limitations:

1. The study was conducted on the students of NITK in the month of October / November 2012. 2. Quota sampling was used to draw samples of students of B Tech and other students. Within each quota convenience sampling was used to draw the samples. 3. While designing the sampling plan, it was proposed to cover 72% of B Tech students and 28% of remaining students ( MBA/MCA/MSc, MTech and PhD ). It was also proposed to cover 75% boys and 25% girls in the survey. But due to time constraint and practical problems the break up of sample drawn was 63.5% for B Tech and 36.5% for others (MBA/MCA/MSc , MTech and PhD). However the ratio of boys to girls could be maintained ( 76% boys, 24% girls) as planned.

Chapter-2
Review of Literature.

Prior to commencing the project, articles on similar subjects, available on the internet, were studied. Website of NITK ( www.nitk.ac.in ) was also studied. The literature which has direct and indirect bearing on the objectives of the present investigation were studied.

In the literature studied1 60% of the respondents used mobile phones primarily for keeping in touch with friends and calling home when they are out. The Gender wise analysis shows that the tendency to call home is more among women than among men and the tendency to call friends is more among boys especially teens in the age group 15-19 years. 51% used mobile phones when they were in transit and 30% used it when they were at home.

Lady respondents were more irritated than men, with loud talk on mobile by people around them. This one of the reasons why more women than men set their mobiles on silent mode. 60% of the respondents could not do without a mobile phone even for a day. The purpose of using the phone i.e Safety, Status, Connectivity, Information or entertainment were also studied in these researches.

The different OS available Mobile phones was studied from the wikepedia site. ( www.wikepedia.com )

Chapter-3
Methodology

Quantitative protocol was used in the study, to obtain a current snapshot of usage of mobile phones by students of NITK. This protocol involves collection of data through a detailed-questionnaire to be administered to students of NITK, with sample allocation to collect the requisite information. The structured questionnaire was designed to elicit information on various aspects of usage of mobile phone by the students of NITK. The questionnaire has a mix of open-ended and close-ended questions in it.

The questionnaires were handed over to the students of NITK directly by one of the team members of this project or their acquaintance and the responses were obtained from the respondents. The purpose of the study was explained to the respondents prior to administration of the tool. Clarifications sought by the respondents were given and any clarification required from the respondents were also obtained on the same day. The respondents were informed that the information obtained is for academic research purpose only and would be kept confidential. Also, in the questionnaire, the respondents were free not to reveal their identity (Please refer Question 11 of the questionnaire). All the questions are short and pertinent. Based on the choice of the respondents, the details of this study will be sent by email to the respondents. Responses obtained were combined, processed and analyzed to arrive at conclusions on various issues related to usage of mobile phones by students of NITK. Summary of the methodology used in the study is given below:

Research type: Conclusive (Exploratory research plus Hypothesis Testing –Descriptive)

Time Dimension of study: This study is Cross-sectional/snapshot study. Since technology of mobile phones changes fast and is prone to obsolescence the conclusions of this study is relevant for the present time only. Hence this study will portray the applications of mobile phones by students of NITK for a period of six months.

Sampling techniques to be used:

During initial discussions random sampling was thought to be suitable sampling method for conducting this study. But the following constraints made the team to opt for non-probability sampling:

i) Time and effort involved in obtaining the list of all students of NITK who are presently studying in NITK i.e. complete list of BE, M Tech, PhD, MBA, MSc, MCA students. ii) Time and effort required in locating the students who have been randomly selected and administering the questionnaire to them and obtaining their response.

In order to overcome the above constraints, and in view of the limited time and resources available to the team, non-probability sampling technique was preferred. The sampling method used was Quota sampling. The details are given below:

Population: It includes all the students of NITK (Population size = 5400)

Sampling Frame: Students of NITK presently attending classes at NITK

Sample size: 200 students

Sampling technique: Quota sampling (non-probability sampling)

Quota: Based on the strength of students at NITK for various courses the following quota was decided :
72% for B.Tech, 28% for M.Tech and all other programs (MCA, PhD etc). Within each of the Quota mentioned, the method of sampling was Convenience Sampling. It was also decided to maintain a ratio of 75: 25 between boys and girls while drawing the sample. The quota has been arrived at based on the strength of students of various courses.

Collection of data: Collection of data will be through questionnaires. A sample questionnaire is enclosed.

Method of Analysis: The filled up questionnaire were entered in to MS Excel. The data entered in Excel was checked with the original data to correct data entry errors. The data was then processed, tabulated, classified, analysed for statistical treatments in the light of objectives of the study.

Statistical measures Used: Percentage: Comparisons are made on the basis of percentage.
Graphical Representation: Graphical representation has been used wherever it was felt necessary.

Eight students had given their email address but that they were not interested in receiving email about result of this survey. This gives us scope for improving Question No 11 in Questionnaire. If the order of questions at 11 were 11 c, 11 b, 11 a ( i.e Option of receiving email, email address and name of student ) it would have been easier for the respondents to fill in the questionnaire.

Chapter-5
Summary and Conclusion

For all the parameters studied, the usage of mobile phone is independent of Gender. For the following parameters, usage of mobile phones depends on the Course in which the Student is studying:

-Category of Phone - Use of features in the phone ( for duration beyond 20 minutes) - Preference of Operating System - Platform based applications used by the students. - Duration for which the phone is kept switched on ( or off) - Basic purpose for which the students use the phone, as perceived by them.

Implications of this study: The general perception is that usage of mobile phone is dependent on Gender. But the study has found out that usage of mobile phones by students of NITK is not dependent on Gender. However the usage depends on the course in which the student is studying, as listed above. Hence for the purpose of Marketing, Advertising it will be beneficial to use the course wise break up of data and target a group of students studying in a particular course.

Recommendation for further studies:

The study has found that usage depends on the course in which the student is studying. Further studies can be carried out with this assumption as the base.

Uses and Abuses of Mobile Phone

...cell phones are a wonderful convenience of modern life; for others, they are irritating contraptions that should be banned from public areas. A mobile phone or cell phone is an electronic telecommunication device with the same basic capability as a conventional fixed-line telephone, but which is also entirely portable and is not required to be connected with a wire to the telephone network. Most current mobile phones connect instead to the network using a wireless radio wave transmission technology. The mobile phone communicates via a cellular network of base stations, also known as cell sites, which are in turn linked to the conventional telephone networks. In addition to the standard voice function of a telephone, a mobile phone can support many additional services such as SMS for text messaging, packet switching for access to the Internet, and MMS for sending and receiving photos and videos. In less than twenty years, mobile phones have gone from being rare and expensive pieces of equipment used by businesses to an all pervasive low-cost personal item. In many countries, mobile phones now outnumber land-line telephones, with most adults and many children now owning mobile phones. It is not uncommon for young adults to simply own a mobile phone instead of a land-line for their residence. In some developing countries, where there is little existing fixed-line infrastructure, the mobile phone has become widespread. With high levels of mobile telephone penetration, a mobile culture...

The Controversy About a Possible Relationship Between Mobile Phone Use and Cancer

...Review The Controversy about a Possible Relationship between Mobile Phone Use and Cancer Michael Kundi Institute of Environmental Health, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria oBjective: During the last decade, mobile phone use increased to almost 100% prevalence in many countries of the world. Evidence for potential health hazards accumulated in parallel by epidemiologic investigations has raised controversies about the appropriate interpretation and the degree of bias and confounding responsible for reduced or increased risk estimates. data sources: Overall, I identified 33 epidemiologic studies in the peer-reviewed literature, most of which (25) were about brain tumors. Two groups have collected data for ≥ 10 years of mobile phone use: Hardell and colleagues from Sweden and the Interphone group, an international consortium from 13 countries coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. data synthesis: Combined odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) from these studies for glioma, acoustic neuroma, and meningioma were 1.5 (1.2–1.8); 1.3 (0.95–1.9); and 1.1 (0.8–1.4), respectively. conclusions: Methodologic considerations revealed that three important conditions for epidemiologic studies to detect an increased risk are not met: a) no evidence-based exposure metric is available; b) the observed duration of mobile phone use is generally still too low; c) no evidence-based selection of end points among the grossly different types of neoplasias is possible...

Cell Phones' Influence

...History Main article: History of mobile phones An evolution of mobile phones Early predecessors of cellular phones included radio communications from ships and trains. The race to create truly portable telephone devices began after World War II, with developments taking place in many countries. The advances in mobile telephony have been traced in successive generations from the early "0G" services like the Bell System's - Mobile Telephone Service and its successor, Improved Mobile Telephone Service. These '0G' systems were not cellular and could support few calls, and were very expensive. The first handheld mobile cell phone was demonstrated by Motorola in 1973. The first commercial automated cellular network was launched in Japan by NTT in 1979. In 1981, this was followed by the simultaneous launch of the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) system in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.[8] Several other countries then followed in the early to mid-1980s. These '1G' systems could support far more calls but still used analog technology. In 1991, the second generation (2G) digital cellular technology was launched in Finland by Radiolinja on the GSM standard, which sparked competition in the sector as the new operators challenged the incumbent 1G network operators. Ten years later, in 2001, the third generation (3G) was launched in Japan by NTT DoCoMo on the WCDMA standard.[9] This was followed by 3.5G, 3G+ or turbo 3G enhancements based on the high-speed packet access (HSPA) family...

Advisor: Diane Kelly Mobile phones are one of the most common information access devices with almost 31% of the global population having access. This exploratory study investigated usage patterns of, and attitude about, cell phones among university students in a mature market (United States) and a rapidly growing new market (India) by surveying students in each country. Key findings from the study include similarities in the usage of phones to communicate with others and in the perception of mobile phone usage in public settings, and differences in the use of text messaging and opinions regarding driving and mobile phone usage. Overall these results suggest students in India use mobile phones differently from their American counterparts. In a developing market like India, mobile phones may be the primary and only phone to which students have access. ...personal mobile phone use in staff and team meetings. A staff survey on attitudes towards the use of mobile phones in the staff / team meetings was conducted. The results indicate that the majority of staff find mobile phone use a major issue in staff meetings. The report concludes that personal mobile phones are disruptive and should be turned off in meetings. It is recommended that UniLab develops a company policy banning the use of mobile phones except in exceptional circumstances. Introduction There has been a massive increase in the use of personal mobile phones over the past five years and there is every indication that this will continue. According to Black (2002) by 2008 almost 100% of working people in Australia will carry personal mobile phones. Black describes this phenomenon as ‘serious in the extreme, potentially undermining the foundations of communication in our society’ (2002, p 167). Currently at UniLab 89% of staff have personal mobile phones. Recently a number of staff have complained about the use of personal mobile phones in meetings and asked what the official company policy is. At present there is no official company policy regarding phone use. This report examines the issue of mobile phone usage in staff meetings and small team meetings. It does not seek to examine the use of mobile phones in the workplace at other times, although some concerns were raised. For the purposes of this report a personal mobile phone is...

Mobile Phone

...A mobile phone (also known as a wireless phone, cell phone, or cellular telephone[1]) is a very small portable radio telephone. The mobile phone can be used to communicate over long distances without wires. It works by communicating with a nearby base station (also called a "cell site") which connects it to the main phone network. As the mobile phone moves around, if the mobile phone gets too far away from the cell it is connected to, that cell sends a message to another cell to tell the new cell to take over the call. This is called a "hand off," and the call continues with the new cell the phone is connected to. The hand-off is done so well and carefully that the user will usually never even know that the call was transferred to another cell. As mobile phones became more popular, they began to cost less money, and more people could afford them. Monthly plans became available for rates as low as US$30 or US$40 a month. Cell phones have become so cheap to own that they have mostly replaced pay phones and phone booths except for urban areas with many people. In recent days, more and more mobile phones are considered as "smartphones". As well as making voice calls, they can be used as computers. History Mobile phones in the 1950s through 1970s were large and heavy, and most were built into cars. In the late 20th century technology improved so people could carry their phones easily. Although Dr. Martin Cooper from Motorola made the first call using a mobile phone in...
