Romeo and Juliet died next to each other from suicide; their lives being taken never needed to happen. If their families got along, they would have been happily married and alive. This play -- Romeo & Juliet-- is written by William Shakespeare. It features the politics of two feuding families and the struggles of a young couple who were born from opposing sides. From bodies piling up one by one in the Capulet tombs, to the shared grief of both houses, it is imperative that their problems could have been solved without violence, because violence is never the answer.

To begin, many characters thought violence was the answer. Either by death or threats of bloodshed, they were ignorant of the problems they would cause. Prince Escalus explains …show more content…
A solution to the prevention of death should never be death to the ones who caused it. If he died from attempting to kill them or someone died from him, nevertheless, both sides would want revenge. Therefore, more problems would add to the feud, and the problems would start to add up with the dead bodies. When Juliet meets Romeo, she ignored the sadness and anger in her life. She realized that he could have a wife. Juliet asks her nurse after meeting Romeo, “Go ask his name. - If he be married, my grave is like to be my wedding bed.” (Shakespeare 1.5.143-144) With this quote, Juliet explains that if Romeo is taken, she will by choice die alone. Although she finds out that Romeo is not married, imagine if it was the opposite way. Juliet would not be doing any good if she chose the path of death by abandonment. She'd rather be alone and stay that way because of one guy. This is not the answer to a little crush and heartbreak. Conversely, Romeo and Juliet become a couple. After a few issues that Romeo and Juliet being together cause, a big fight between Mercutio and Tybalt occurs. Mercutio ends up being stabbed by Tybalt and calls for help to Benvolio by

The Norms and Values in Verona in Romeo and Juliet

...Explore the presentation of norms and values within Verona During this essay I will focus on how society at the time had an impact on Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. I will explore how the norms and values within institutions in Verona such as ‘the family’ and ‘the church’ played a role the couple’s fate. A theme throughout the play was love. All the violence and hatred was a result of Romeo and Juliet’s unexpected relationship. The prologue was a sonnet; Shakespeare used the sonnet to remind the audience of romance. Lot’s of love poems at the time were in sonnet form. He was reminding the audience that ultimately what causes all the violence and betrayal is love. Religion and the Church had a massive impact and held a great power over people during the 16th Century. In some ways religion was more powerful than the law. When Romeo and Juliet first met they fell madly in love, ‘My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough tough with a tender kiss’. So to live by the moral rules set by the church they had to marry. Friar Lawrence’s role in the church gave him a lot of power and earned him a lot of respect and so the couple were over joyed when he agreed to wed them in the church ‘In one respect I’ll they assist be; For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancour to pure love.’ Religion is a powerful force within the play as a whole. During the 16th century people couldn’t live together before marriage and divorce was practically...

...Heroes & Villains in Literature The following essay is going to discuss and analyze heroes and villains in Literature. This essay is going to focus especially on three famous books written by William Shakespeare. The referring books are ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Othello’. In these three different novels, a great variety of stereotypes of heroes and villains can be appreciated. William Shakespeare was born on April 23rd 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. When he was four or five he began his education at the local petty school. He left the local grammar school when he was about fourteen and went to help in his father’s glove-making shop. When he was eighteen, he got married and by the time he was twenty-one, he was the father of three children. [1] At some time during the next seven years, he went to London and found employment in the theatre. When he was twenty-eight, he was already well enough known as an actor and playwright. He mostly lived and worked in London until his mid-forties, when he returned to his family and home in Stratford, where he remained in prosperous circumstances until his death on April 23rd 1616, his fifty-second birthday. [2] In the thirty seven plays that are his chief legacy to the world human nature is displayed in all its astonishing variety. [3] While Shakespeare caused much controversy, he also earned lavish praise and has profoundly impacted the world over in areas of literature, culture, art, theatre, and film and is considered...

Romeo and Juliet

...Romeo and Juliet Essay - Critical Commentary Critical Commentary Opening Prologue: The first act prologue not only reveals what will happen during the course of the play, but also some of the major dichotomies. The opening line shows us that the Capulet and Montague houses are, although at odds, equal in their aristocratic status. It was considered "fashionable" in the Renaissance for aristocratic families to have feuds, but they were not to engage in public fighting, a taboo which is broken by the Capulets and the Montagues. However, line 4 indicates that these equal families are in an ungoverned situation where no rules will be obeyed, which is why they are able to fight. The Chorus reveals one of the most important themes of the play in line 5-8, which is that Romeo and Juliet are destined not only to love each other, but to die, which will end the feud. The fact that Shakespeare tells us the end of the play before it even begins is intentional—this creates a tension between what we as the audience know must happen, and what could have happened if the characters had acted differently. Thus the theme of fate versus free will emerges: do Romeo and Juliet die because it was their destiny, or do they die because of their actions and the actions of those around them? The third major point that surfaces in the opening prologue is one of extremes. There is extreme hatred between the Capulet and Montague families. The only solution to...

What Are the Consequences of Conflict in Act 3 Scene 1

...In Act 3 Scene 1 of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet the consequences of conflict and violence at very apparent. It is a huge turning point in this play as the Prince swore at the start of the play that if there was any more fighting then that person who caused that duel would die. But due to the circumstances, Romeo has only been banished as the death of Tybalt was revenge for Tybalt killing Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend. Romeo’s reaction to this is that he thinks that is the end of the world as he will never be able to see Juliet, his one true love, and the recently married couple will have a very distant relationship. So throughout this essay I will discuss what the consequences of conflict are in Act 3 Scene 1. The atmosphere at the beginning of the scene is quite happy and jolly but Benvolio is worried that there may be a meeting of Capulet’s and Montague’s following the challenge sent by Tybalt to Romeo. ‘By my heel, I care not.’ This shows us that Mercutio doesn’t care if the Capulet’s are hear or not as he is ready to and in a happy mood which is expressed through the use of the word ‘care’. Making us as an audience feel protected and appreciated because Tybalt has challenged Romeo to a duel but due to Mercutio’s arrogance we know that Romeo and us will be protected and care for by Mercutio if Tybalt is beating and nearly killing Romeo in this fight. How does Tybalt react to Romeo’s offer of peace? Describe Tybalt’s mood as the scene develops. How does Mercutio react...

...and writing skills would be my ADHD. It negatively effects how much time I can spend working while sitting still, and it reduced the speed at which I can read and write. As a reader and a writer, I have learned to compensate for this disability; however, ADHD continues to control my education. 2. Academic Writing When I recall writing in high school, I remember feeling lazy. I am not the most fanatical writer, in fact, I would consider myself one of the least fanatical writers. I have always had a large lexicon with a mediocre sense of stringing words together, so English has always been fairly easy for me. I have written research papers, essays, résumés, book chapters, persuasive essays, and reviews. My papers covered topics ranging from videogames and their effects on childhood violence, to my personal opinion on Romeo and Juliet. All of my writing had the common goal of expanding my ability to express myself and my opinions in a formal way. Reading allowed me to formulate my own personal idea about the topic on hand, and research allowed me to back that idea with viable evidence from factual sources. High school writing is valuable to me because it helped me to prepare for college. The English teachers at my high school expected all students to put forth effort. Student’s writing needed to clearly express their main idea while providing evidence to enforce that idea. Teachers prioritized the student’s ability to get their point across, or to persuade their reader;...

Analysis

...Campsall Here's how to write your best essay ever... Whatever the essay you have been asked to write, the key to making it as effective as it can be is to write it as a wellstructured and well-supported argument. You will find that an ‘argument’ essay is easier to plan, more fulfilling to write and for your teacher (or the examiner)... a pleasure to mark (and that’s no bad thing!!). It’s important to get one thing out of the way at the outset: an essay question has no ‘right’ answer. You can breathe easy on that one. It’s just not like that. This is English and we leave those kinds of ‘right answers’ to the mathematicians and scientists. An English essay is not an ‘answer’ in that way at all, rather, it’s an informed opinion; but, like all opinions, it’ll require explanation, argument and support. It requires you to argue your case. What’s the first thing you do when you set about starting an essay? Many people start by searching through the text on which their essay is based in the hope of finding suitable quotations to help ‘answer’ the essay question. Well, there’s no getting away from this basic process, but there are ways to make it altogether more efficient, useful and most importantly, more likely to earn a higher grade. More on this later. The Argument Essay The secret of a good essay? Write it as an argument for what you believe! What is there to argue about? Plenty! You’ll be arguing to support your point of view on the essay question - one that you’ve boldly stated...

Comparison Plays/Poems

...Literature Essay - Draft Throughout the four poems; "To his Coy Mistress" "My Last Duchess" "Porphyria's Lover" and "Havisham." there is a constant attitude towards women and themes such as violence, possession and patriarchal society are present. However these all differ in nature and theme despite the resounding attitude towards women. THCM is written in 17th Century and the poem depicts a man's urges to will a woman into bed with him. The poem has a light tone and humorous aspects throughout. In contrast MLD which is written in 19th Century has a much darker and menacing tone; it is about a controlling Duke and his previous duchess and unravels the dark story behind them. PL is a Victorian poem, the poem is gothic, crude and perverted in parrts with a man's strange insane intentions. However all these poems are linked by the idea of the male possessing and controlling a woman. H on the other hand is a woman's interpretation of a 19th century fictional character and how this character is left with feelings of violent hatred after being let down in marriage by her fiancé who has wed her to gain some of her riches. The theme of the poem is violent and confrontation but does compare and contrast with PL with the gothic nature. These four dramatic monologues do vary in storyline and tone however he same themes are made apparent in all of them and is what gives these poems a link and comparisons. Desire, death, domination and obsession as well as the balance of control between...

...Clean India Clean India - Swachch Bharath The father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi had said that, “Sanitation is more important than Independence” during his time before the independence of India. He was well aware of the bad and unclean situation of the India. He had emphasised the people of India a lot about the cleanliness and sanitation as well as its implementation in the daily lives. However, it was not so effective and failed because of the incomplete participation of people. After many years of independence of India, a most effective campaign of cleanliness is launched to call people for their active participation and complete the mission of cleanliness. The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee has said in June 2014 while addressing the Parliament that, “For ensuring hygiene, waste management and sanitation across the nation a Swachh Bharat Mission will be launched. This will be our tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary to be celebrated in the year 2019”. In order to fulfil the vision of Mahatma Gandhi and make India an ideal country all over the world, the Prime Minister of India has initiated a campaign called Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi (2nd of October 2014). This campaign has the target of completion of mission till 2019 means 150th birthday anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi.
