...TITLE: Why volunteer? Factors that motivate volunteer behaviour in a church, from the perspective of the volunteer. AUTHUR: 31889638 HMPYC80 Assignment 02 Page 1 Unique Number: 657101 COVER LETTER Mr James Guilder Kenneth Copeland Ministries Milton Office Park Avocet Close Bromhoff 2196 Dear Sir In our most recent meeting you expressed some frustration at the ministries inability to retain volunteers for its various projects. I believe I may be able to assist in this regard. As you know, I am currently an honours student in Psychology at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and as such I have a special interest in the factors which motivate the behaviour of different individuals. As part of my honours course work I am required to complete a research project, which is to be submitted to my peers for review. My research topic for my course work is “Why do people do volunteer work?” Since this research topic could potentially aid the ministry in better understanding how to attract and retain volunteers it seems appropriate to propose and request permission to complete this research project on behalf of the ministry. I therefore herewith include my research proposal. I hope to hear from you soon. Kind regards, Candice Keen 5 Disa Street Morningside Ext 2 2196 Page 2 Sandton Why volunteer? ...1. I think that using volunteers to do work for people that would normally get paid is a slippery slope. One hand it could be very cost effective for the company because they are cutting down on payroll and overhead. However on the other hand it could do away with jobs spiking the economy to take a hit. 2. I would be concerned about an already upset customer maybe not getting the best advice or customer service. In this day and age customer service can be the driving force of your business, it can make or break you. If a customer becomes to upset they will just go down the street to the next business offering the service needed. If I were Mr. Studness I would make sure all calls were recorded and monitored regularly. If a volunteer got to much negative feedback they would not be allowed to post on the site. 3. Work specialization describes the degree to which tasks in an organization are divided into separate jobs. The main idea of this organizational design is that an entire job is not done by one individual. It is broken down into steps, and a different person completes each step. Individual employees specialize in doing part of an activity rather than the entire activity. Volunteers fit into this because they are taking on tasks that have been given to them specifically. Departmentalization is the basis by which jobs are grouped together. For instance every organization has its own specific way of classifying and grouping work activities. Functional Departmentalization...

...When I was CEO of Bates Dorland, we had the advertising accounts for some of Britain’s biggest retailers including Woolworths, B&Q and Superdrug. They all came under the watchful Kingfisher eyes of Geoff Mulcahy. Aside from his disconcerting habit of chewing paper-clips in meetings, Geoff would often interrupt an attempt to discuss the positioning of Woolworths by delivering an anecdote about how Wal-Mart dealt with screwdrivers. He was the epitome of the notion that “retail is detail” and that the duty of all retail directors is to be out in the stores. There is no doubting his genius for detail but perhaps Woolworths would still be with us if we had been able to focus on the fundamental reason for it to exist on the modern high street. I always think it’s a lovely touch that Sainsbury’s describes its headquarters building as the ‘Store Support Centre.’ Yet Tesco now needs its headquarters to be the ‘Brand Strategy Centre’ and Mr. Lewis looks like an excellent candidate to deliver just that. It’s easy to forget how dazzling Tesco used to be as an innovator. Clubcard led the way in customer loyalty and database marketing. ‘Computers for Schools’ was a good, tangible CSR idea. Tesco’s pricing and range selection was always highly competitive, leveraging its scale. Yet there was always a sense that a lot of its energy was a banker-style, workaholic culture, in love with its own logistical brilliance, aiming for the number one slot, and determined to do anything to get...

...other in work is the most specific ways to show the society how people unite. It does not only make our work more effective, but also we have more opportunities to express emotion and care for each other. From the time when I was still in high school, I had many opportunities to participate in charitable activities, especially volunteer work. I, along with my friends, established an association which was called “The Lucky Grass Flower”. This was the place that we used to shelter the disadvantaged children and orphan in our city. We received so much support and help from the school and other media communications. This helped us a lot in completing our care for the children. In addition, the most important thing was that all the things we did came from our hearts, and this was our motivation for this activity. That was the first volunteer work that I participated in, and it was also the most significant voluntary work that I have ever taken part in. Also in my country, Vietnam, the Communist Youth League is running a very large and meaningful volunteer program for undergraduate students every summer, and it is named "The Green Summer Volunteer Campaign". This volunteer program is very useful for all young people. In participating in this program, the volunteers will be involved with the diversity and richness of activities. However, to be involved in this program, students must undergo a very serious selection contest, based on some certain criteria. Most of the volunteers who are...

...Working and volunteer work are two similar things but different as well. Working is where a person is employed by a person within a company where you are paid based on the position you were hired for. Volunteer work is where the individual does work that is very much needed as well but does not receive a pay for that work. I will be writing about how work and volunteer work can have an impact on people and communities throughout the world. Work is needed to provide a person with basic needs to provide for themselves and even for their family. In order for this to happen the person must meet the requirements the company is looking for in a future employee. Without work a person or family cannot pay the bills needed to keep their home, vehicle, electricity, gas, and even food for their family. Many people have a job to meet these needs by staying focused on what they need to achieve to stay with that employer. However, there are people who just have a job that do not have prerequisites because the company provides training for those future employees. A person may have a job just to meet those needs but are not happy with that job. This is because the company and that employee both benefit from work arrangement. The company hires the individual to work in their company and the individual gets paid, therefore he/she is able to provide for themselves and/or their family. When I worked in a photo lab I developed pictures for customers and also helped in retouching pictures...

...organisation which aims to help and provide shelter for children who are being abandoned, abused at risk and also children from the drug field community. (Byran n.d.) The aim of this proposal is to present strategies which are relevant to help Shelter Home Malaysia to expand and reach out to a higher base of people. Among the challenges address are the lack of funding and also lack of volunteers. A coordinated plan is carefully drafted along with contacts of sponsors attached to the proposal. Volunteers Volunteer is a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for aservice or undertaking. They are person who performs a service willingly and without pay.Not-for-profit membership organizations such as ASSE rely on their volunteers to fulfill their vision and goals (Camplin 2009). Getting enough of the right people is always an ongoing concern to all non-profit organizations. Lack of volunteers is a main problem that is currently being faced by Shelter Home. In order to operate all the ongoing activities and events smoothly, more volunteers must be recruited. People volunteer for a number of different reasons, ranging from a desire to learn new skills, have fun or make a difference. Some are completely devoted to the cause, while others simply wish to do their bit where they can. In actual fact, many of the reasons for volunteering abroad are the same as those for volunteering at home but here there is the added bonus of getting to travel. However volunteering...

...of people around the world volunteer their time and skills to improve the lives of the less fortunate. Students, civic groups and retirees are many of the groups that respond to the call to volunteer. Volunteerism can be done locally, but sometimes volunteerism takes place in distant places. Some volunteers spend weeks, months and sometimes years, helping organizations and less fortunate communities. Some people argue that some volunteers do this type of work, not to help others but only to help themselves. Does volunteerism help or harm communities, who are looking for assistance from volunteers? Volunteerism is a great opportunity for everyone to get experience in the field. It is a great opportunity to give back and to get experience dealing with issues they may not see in their daily lives. Also it is an excellent way of learning about other cultures, and the less fortunate and the issues that they face. Volunteering is the easiest way to get involved by using your knowledge and skills to help others. Often, I volunteer with local not for profit groups assisting them with events or whatever they need to accomplish. I am always looking for something that I can volunteer my time and skills as a way of giving back to the community. Although volunteers receive no monetary reward, knowing that they are doing something good to benefit everyone rewards them. Also, it is a great way of networking with others, who may share your same views. I volunteer because I see it as a need...

...Assignment: 70 HRPYC81 Research report for project: PYC4809 Title: What motivates people to do volunteer work? Examination period: October/November 2013 Contents What motivates people to do volunteer work? Abstract Introduction The motivation of people to volunteer has long fascinated those researching and working alongside volunteers. Understanding the motivational drives of those who volunteer has long been a recurring theme preoccupying much of literature on volunteering. According to research by Esmond and Dunlop (2004), what actually motivates a person to volunteer is a complex and vexing question, yet understanding these motivations can be of great assistance to organisation. Every year millions of people around the world give of their time and energy to make a difference through volunteering (Esmond, 2004). The types of volunteer activities engaged in by people are as varied as the volunteers themselves and their value to their communities and society as a whole remains immeasurable. Understanding the underlying motivational drives of those who volunteer has been a recurring theme preoccupying much of literature on volunteering. So what is it that motivates and moves people into action, to get up, to go and to volunteer? An examination of previous research investigating this complex issue follows. Literature review According to tutorial letter 103 for HRPYC81 (2013, p.5), “Volunteerism may be defined as contributing one’s time or...

...that benefit both the community and the volunteer themselves. When someone donates a handful of time, the difference made is tremendous and it shapes a community for the more preponderant while the experience amends the person who donated the time. It is what makes a community because it assembles people to work on a goal. Whether it is a fundraiser for the research to remedy a disease that affects the whole world, or to avail a local family who has fallen in a time of calamity, volunteers make it transpire. Community life is amended by availing others and lending an availing hand to get a job done more efficaciously. More people working equals less work for each person and less time for the project. When I was a young boy and it was brought to my attention how others did not have anything or anyone. It was Christmas time and my family packed up 30 lunches, scarfs, T-shirts, blankets and we drove down to Washington DC. I was told to pick out people who I thought needed to eat and looked cold. I remember thinking everyone had a home, family and food for themselves. It never occurred to me that people lived on the street with no food, shelter or support. That day we handed our food and clothing to people who truly had nothing. As a direct result of giving and wanting to help at that moment, I was inspired to lend a helping hand and contribute to my own community. We donated our time and gave hope to someone who required it. A volunteer conjointly benefits themselves because...

...operate their business and this need will continue to grow as a result of volunteering trends in an ageing population (Volunteering Australia, 2012). This brief will outline some of the challenges and opportunities faced as a result of an ageing population, specifically focusing on the Green Frog Nursery. 2. Summary of the issue Whilst volunteering in Australia is steadily increasing, most organisations require more volunteers to achieve a significant social impact (volunteering Australia, 2011). The majority of volunteers are older people who are more likely to volunteer than those in younger age groups (Volunteering Australia, 2012). One of the reasons for this is greater community engagement through voluntary work practise, which positively influences volunteers ‘subjective quality of life (Taghian, D´Souza & Polonsky, 2012). The rate of volunteering in Australia is impacted negatively by variables including age, gender, locality and cultural background (Volunteering Australia, 2012). Green Frog Nursery has to replace its core team of volunteers with younger people for its continual success, however this is not an easy task as they view ‘volunteering’ differently to other age groups (Volunteering Australia, 2012). Furthermore, the “negative image of volunteering may reduce young people´s willingness to participate” (Ho & O'Donohoe, 2014, p. 855). Green Frog Nursery needs to address this problem and engage young people to join their organisation. One way they...

...Czarina Miara O. Raña Ms. Valera COM32 I. Rationale Volunteers wish to assist others in life, rather than just themselves. The benefit volunteers receive is a mere personal satisfaction in knowing they have helped out others. There are many ways to volunteer which doesn't require much on your part, but for the people it helps, it would mean the world. Today's generation has a lot more distractions than previous generations. Yet despite our busy schedules, most young people still find time to get involved with their community. I believe that everyone, especially the more fortunate, has a certain obligation to give back to their community. II. ...Number 1, 2011 www.ijemr.org VOLUNTEER SATISFACTION AND INTENT TO REMAIN: AN ANALYSIS OF CONTRIBUTING FACTORS AMONG PROFESSIONAL GOLF EVENT VOLUNTEERS Gina Pauline Syracuse University ABSTRACT Sport events are increasingly reliant on episodic volunteers for the successful delivery of an event. As there continues to exist a surge in the organization of sporting events coupled with the demand for volunteers, event organizers must concern themselves with utilizing the appropriate recruitment and retention strategies. In an effort to do this, one must understand the points of satisfaction for volunteers as well as factors influencing their future intentions to volunteer. While there exists a plethora of research to understand the motivation of volunteers, exploring the antecedents of volunteer satisfaction as well as intent to remain has been limited. This study investigates the factors influencing volunteer satisfaction as well as intentions to remain as a volunteer for future sporting events from an elite men’s golf event on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) circuit. Results indicated that overall volunteers were satisfied with their experience and willing to return yet were concerned with the level of communication between the organization and volunteers. The present study also found that longevity of service influenced volunteer satisfaction. A MANOVA revealed significant differences between first time and returning volunteers in their intent to continue volunteering...
