...Why I Chose to Pursue an MBA Abstract This paper will outline the reasons I chose to pursue an MBA. I will construct and support an argument for my pursuit of an MBA. I will support my decision of pursing an MBA with references and data of individuals who have written articles regarding the pursuit of an MBA for African Americans. This paper will include my Jungian results from the 16-Type Personality Insights questionnaire to see if I have the qualifications of a manager. Why I Chose to Pursue an MBA I decided to pursue an MBA to start a new career and to achieve a personal goal. I have a best friend who persuaded me to further my education. She would tell me, “Seles, this world is going to require that individuals who seek employment have a Master’s degree.” I began to think how my goal would be achieved and what university I attend. Wondering and worrying about the cost of this type of education caused me to have many sleepless nights and much stress. My concern was finding the time between allocating times with my six year-old son, working part-time as a volunteer and taking care/assisting my parents who are 70. Also my biggest issue I had was who would hire a recent graduate who is almost 50, African-American single parent of a six year-old son and who have never worked in the corporate world. So I prayed and asked GOD to authorize my pursuit of a Master’s degree. I talked with my advisor Lance Thorsen and he eased my mind and encouraged me to...

...Word count: 803 Setting up My Expectations: Life after College My days in college as an English language student made me recognize the best things about literature and the art of writing. It was soul enriching, whenever I read various literary texts or critiques, and discovered some established writers in the country where I live. These writers all had something in common: They were humbled by their respective experiences of achieving success in an industry where writers are now less valued as builders of society. Initially, some writers had secretarial or other jobs not particularly appropriate for English majors. Some were fortunate enough to work as editors or writers. While some of these situations saddened me, I felt proud of those who patiently worked hard to earn a living and finally did make it as professors of literature. I have known some English professors who went to graduate school for their Master’s degree in Education major in Literature while teaching, showing their undying passion for the field. I was very lucky to grow up in a family that had the financial capability and resources to support my college education and would also be able to support my desired Master’s degree later on. Having this financial capability is a privilege. I could not easily throw away this opportunity to further my studies. I view this opportunity as a stepping stone to helping me become a literary scholar, professor and researcher. I understand that the way to the top is straight...

...minds of many college students in todays world. Mike Rose in his article about “Blue-Collar Brilliance” as well as Brent Staples in his writing about “Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A’s” make several valid, relative points that correlate with Bird’s belief on college being a complete waste of both time and money. Bird’s argument can be valid under the circumstance that one becomes unusually successful in a blue collar career, a student is simply given grades instead of earned and many other situations that go outside the traditional aspects of society and education. I, however, strongly disagree with Bird’s belief that college is a waste of time and money because despite her assertion that it is an expensive, time consuming commitment and the initial intention may be influenced by parents or societal pressures, the student will eventually gain a desire to learn and pursue a career if college is the right path for them. Even though I may not agree, Bird supports her argument very well with both statistics and convincing input. By stating that “no more than 25 percent of students are turned on by Casey !2 classwork” (Bird 217), she therefore provides the reader with valid, relatable evidence that college may indeed be a waste of both time and money. She then follows with her convincing opinion that claims “I have been overwhelmed by the prevailing sadness on American campuses” (Bird 218). This implies and supports that students are not happy with classwork...

This writer will describe the stance of the United States requiring organizations to offer paternity leave. They give rationale for the position of choice. Also state whether specialized organizational arrangements can be made for those workers wish to combine career and raising children, and give an explanation why or why not. If specialized organizational arrangement should be made for the workers, explain the steps that an organization can take to accommodate them adequately with their parental needs. Lastly, state whether a firm should be obligated to give employees flexibility to work out a particular career and family balance that is right for them. State whether this is far beyond the social responsibility of the organization, then justify the response. Swedish Daddies Today, we value family and career. ...Master’s Prepared Nurse Interview Badia Brown April 5, 2016 NUR 502 Grand Canyon University Instructor: Diana D. Naser, PhD, APRN, CCRP Introduction In an effort to determine whether obtaining a graduate education was going to be beneficial to this writer, several sources were contacted. With the numerous options possible in a nursing career, deciding which avenue to pursue became the most difficult task. After speaking with the Nurse Educator at an institution, it was clear that a master’s in nursing with a concentration in education would be the most likely choice. For the sake of this paper, that nurse educator/the interviewee will be referred to as A.E. and all quotes, unless otherwise noted will be direct dialog from A.E. “Healthcare is ever changing and by continuing education, it puts one in the position to keep abreast of new policies and procedures in nursing.” The previous statement was taken directly from A.E. Overview of Career A.E. began her nursing education in the early 1980’s at Hahnemann University School for Allied Health Professions in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “Nursing school was a lot different than what you get now”, says A.E. According to memory, there was little respect for nurses on a professional and academic level. She recalls that Hahnemann University School for Allied Health Professions, which is now Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions, was employed with a male dominated staff. A.E. reports that all the...

Cinema opens windows into multiple worlds; the study of film provides the tools with which to explore and understand these worlds. For New Zealand actor Sam Neill, a long, lonely road was an essential image in the landscape of New Zealand filmmaking when he co-directed Cinema of Unease in 1996 with filmmaker Judy Rymer. Over the years talented scriptwriters, directors and producers have travelled this road. Today New Zealand cinema has moved far from its uneasy beginnings. It has become an international thoroughfare where the cinemas of the world, including Hollywood and Bollywood, come to tell stories using New Zealand’s production and post-production facilities, employing local actors, crew and other technical staff. The study of Film makes it possible to consider the diversity in New Zealand cinema and in all cinemas of the world. The disciplined approach to studying these cinemas allows students to better understand not only how cinema itself functions, but also how New Zealand cinema contributes to the global cinematic tapestry. play? How do filmmakers contribute to culture and influence societal attitudes? How can other disciplines, such as psychology, help us to better understand film? ...20 December 2011 Be Yourself Every morning at 5:00 a.m. my alarm rang. I had gotten accustomed to waking up to the sound of pots being gathered, plates and cups being assembled and sometimes shattering glass. That was a typical early morning. My mother was getting ready to open the restaurant as she did every morning for the early birds. Her restaurant was an annexation to our house. While my siblings were still asleep, I would crawl out of bed and head to the kitchen to give her a hand. Being in the kitchen to help cook was the highlight of my day. Parents in general inculcate to their children at an early age, the differences between genders. Before a child is born, his or her parents have in most cases chosen the color of clothing based on his or her gender. Society has predetermined that the color blue represents the male sex and the color pink the female. White and yellow are known to be unisex colors. The same gender categorization extends when it comes to selecting toys for children. Trucks and cars are known to be for boys whereas Barbie dolls are known to be for girls (Zhumkhawala). Children are not only influenced by their parents’ behavior in reference to gender, but also by their social environment. Individuals who are raised among brothers and sisters can observe the ways that their parents would try to make a clear distinction of gender identities between them. The authors of Parenting and the child’s world state that parents play an important role in shaping...

...centuries by both philosophers as well as writers who depict childhood as a stage of innocence, unlike adulthood which is the stage of experience. This representation is developed in nineteenth century writings which witnessed specific gendered stories either for boys or girls. Those stories were meant to reinstate in the child the requirements of society from his gender in the future. A girl has to prepare herself to be a housewife whose place is the private sphere, or who will be the angel in the home, while a boy must prepare himself to the public sphere, to be the bread winner of the family. This leads us to the claim that children's stories are not ideologically...

...Statement of Purpose During my adolescent years, I watched my little sister struggle with her sexual identity. I knew my sister was going to be unlike other children and I found myself constantly analyzing her behaviors and exploring why she did not see herself as we saw her. As my sister went through her school years, her struggles with her counterparts became more apparent. She became isolated, depressed and exhibited suicidal behaviors. As my sister matured into a young woman, I was intrigued as to why her view of herself versus society’s expectations of her as a woman would impact her life in such a manner that would lead her to want to have a sexual reassignment surgery. Through my sister’s identity crisis, I found a passion for psychology. I wanted to better understand the dynamic between people and how those interactions affect our lives, personalities and decisions. I asked myself every day, how was my sister going to cope today? Ultimately, I decided that I wanted to find a way to helped those who struggled to find peace and comfort in their lives. My research into the field of psychology started during my freshman year of college and, before long, psychological and social theories had become an integral part of my life. What is particularly interesting to me about pursuing a career in the scientific field of psychology is the potential to use my education along with my life experiences in determining how to serve others in need. My first adventure into the psychology...

...Going into college you rarely hear anyone say ‘I want to pursue an education in the liberal arts.’ You may hear students interest in majors such as business, or nursing, or even engineering, but never liberal arts. Why is that? An education in liberal arts is just as important, if not more, as an education in any other field. Allow me to explain why. The liberal arts teaches more than just one general skill. It of course provides a general education, however, it also provides an advantage in written and oral communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving, critical and analytical thinking, and adaptability to change. When entering the job market employers are generally attracted to those with these attributes. The purpose of a liberal arts education is not to train you for a specific job, but to prepare you for the world of work with an invaluable set of skills. Earning a liberal education is very advantageous not only to one’s career, but one’s life as well. Leo Strauss described liberal education as ‘education in culture or toward culture.’ I could not help but agree. Since attending a liberal college and taking a course in liberal arts, I have been exposed to many new things. I got to hear classical music live from a world-renowned violinist, see a contemporary dance performance, read literature from writers such as Tolstoy and Machiavelli, and experience many other wonderful events. I am sure some may think ‘well what’s so important about culture...
