Why Sugar Is Bad

Health-conscious religious people even refer to sugar as an "evil" drug with drastic effects and consequences. What makes sugar bad is not where it originates but how it is processed. Sugar cane is a natural plant from Southeastern Asia that has a high alkaline state because of all the vitamins and minerals in it. However, sugar processing plants use refined sugar by taking sugar cane through an intricate process that strips vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and enzymes from the plant. Refined sugar normally taste bland, just like that caramel sundae I discussed earlier, but real complex sugar has a natural sweetness that you would truly enjoy. Refined sugar is so dangerous that it literally destroys everything it touches in the body, like fire

Buffer Stocks

...commodity such as sugar or tin. A buffer stock is an intervention system that aims to limit the fluctuations of the price of a commodity. A commodity is a good that is traded, but usually refers to raw materials or semi-manufactured goods that are traded in bulk. In free markets agricultural prices fluctuates from year to year depending on the level of output affecting both the famers’ income and ability to make long term plans. In some cases this has led to setting up buffer stocks to ensure consistent supply and income to farmers. The authorities sell from the stock when harvests are poor and buy in stock when harvests are good. This prevents huge price increases in bad times and low famers’ incomes when harvests are good. One reason why using a buffer stock scheme to stabilise the price of a commodity such as sugar or tin is a good idea is that it prevents fluctuations in the price of a commodity. This is because when the output of a commodity increases or decreases the government will be able to buy the excess stock and store it, or release the stock that they have stored. This means that, in the case of sugar and tin, there will not be a shortage causing an increase in price because the government will be able to release stock that they have previously stored to maintain the output and price, therefore leading to no fluctuations in the price of sugar and tin. Another reason why using a buffer stock scheme to stabilise the price of a commodity such as sugar or tin is a good...

Sugar...Friend or Foe???

...Ms. E’s Health/Fitness Corner Sugar…….Friend or Foe??? Do you have a sweet tooth? Do you drink soda and other sugar filled liquids? If you answered yes to these questions keep reading. Did you know one can of soda has fourteen teaspoons of sugar in it? If you drink one can of soda a day for a week you are consuming 98 teaspoons of sugar. Even worse….one soda a day for a month equals 392 teaspoons of sugar. The average American eats about one hundred pounds of sugar a year. Sugar is added to prepared foods like soft drinks, cookies, candy, cereal, spaghetti sauce, crackers, and just about anything from a box or can. When you consume processed sugar, your body releases more insulin; this is supposed to balance your blood sugar levels, however, when you eat large amounts of refined sugar your body dumps large amounts of insulin into your bloodstream. Sugar in moderate amounts is not harmful however; excessive amounts can lead to tooth decay, diabetes, obesity, and even cancer. If you are craving something sweet, try reaching for an apple, orange, banana or raisons. Sugar is naturally in fruit and it provides food energy. So why is sugar so bad for you? Sugar is bad for you because it is depleted of its life forces, vitamins, and minerals and you are left with pure refined carbohydrates. Your body can’t utilize refined starch and carbs without the presence of proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Refined sugar can be described as “empty” calories, and it drains essential...

Diet Coke

...body. This is why I am here to help open your mind to see how harmful the soda can be to your body. One: Soda has high fructose corn syrup. Two: Diet coke is worse than regular coke. Three: Soda is very high in calories.         My first reason is because many sodas contain high fructose corn syrup which is harmful to your body. First of all soft drinks with high fructose corn syrup contributes to the development of diabetes, mostly in young children. It can also cause tissue damage which could cause you to get diseases; high fructose corn syrup can also cause obesity. Soda can also raise your blood sugar along with bad cholesterol and make it more likely to have a heart attack.          My second reason is about the type of sodas and why soft drinks (Coke, Pepsi, etc.) that claim they are diet is even more unhealthy for you. First of all diet coke is worse for you than regular soda. diet coke can make you become at risk of diabetes and cause obesity. If you drink one can of diet soda a day you have more of a chance to of developing metabolic syndrome than those who drink none at all. Diet coke also contains more calories than regular sodas all together.            My third reason is soda (regular or diet) is high in calories along with sugar/carbohydrates. All sodas have highs and lows in two things sugar and calories. Regular soda is higher in calories than in sugar and diet soda is high in sugar than in calories. The reason people may get high blood sugar while drinking...

How Candy Conquered America Research Paper

...I chose the beyond the line question, “Do you think that the change of candy over the years has impacted America in a positive or negative way?” In the book How candy conquered America by Lauren Tarshis, candy and sugar were very expensive in the early 1800s, so only the very wealthy could afford lots of sugar. But then, in the year 1847, Oliver Chase created an amazing invention. Oliver was a pharmacist in Boston, and he had been tinkering with his lozenge - making machine for four months. Lozenges were tablets filled with remedies or “cures” for sicknesses. They were very hard to make, because lozenges were very hard to make by hand. Finally, Chase’s lozenge-making machine worked, and Chase became very delighted, because now, he could make lozenges with the pull of a lever. But then, Oliver Chase encountered another idea-an idea that would change America forever! Why not use his machine to make only candy? As it turned out, it was a great idea, and Oliver’s candies, which he called “Chase Lozenges”, became a big hit, because now, everyone could afford candy, not just the wealthy people. Oliver Chase’s lozenge-making machine was a critical invention for the candy-making industry, not only because he could mass-produce candy, but...

Healthy Eating

...by following a diabetic diet even if the individual is not diabetic. Knowing what the diet consists of and following it can help promote a healthier weight. Improving a diet can help a person ward off certain types of diseases and knowing why it is hard to stick to a specific diet can help a person’s chances at succeeding. Although obesity and its related diseases are on a rise, healthy eating plans like a diabetic diet can contribute to a healthier lifestyle. What is a diabetic diet and why is it recommended even if people do not have diabetes? A diabetic diet is about eating food that is naturally nutrient packed and low in fats and calories ("Diabetes Diet: Create Your Healthy-Eating Plan", 2013). This diet consists of healthy carbohydrates, High fiber foods, low sugar, moderate protein, and “good” fats. Healthy carbohydrates consist of eating fruit, vegetables, whole grain, and legumes (which are also high in fiber). Eating sugar and “bad” carbohydrates like white bread and pasta raise sugar levels in a person’s blood ("Diabetes Diet: Create Your Healthy-Eating Plan", 2013). A diet high in sugar and carbohydrate can lead to weight gain. Each meal should consist of 2-5 ounces of meat or a protein food, as protein foods do not raise sugar levels and make an individual feel fuller longer ("Protein Foods", 2014). Good fats are also good to add to your diet. Foods that contain monounsaturated and...

Nutrition

...Research has shown that the top health and nutrition concerns in America are associated with severe diseases like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer and hypertension. Nutritionists assure that physical activity and eating the right foods are the best medicines. However, research shows that Americans do not follow the right recommendations. This was the main reason why I chose to teach this topic. Providing them with the right information and guidelines to face this issue is my goal. Besides being well aware and informed about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, I am a person who is really passionate for food, cooking, and exercising. I am constantly reading and researching about nutritional news, facts and healthy ideas to include into my daily basis. Moreover, I am currently interning at WBHI, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help women with breast cancer and heart disease. I am confident that prevention and education is key to a healthier and happier life. These are other secondary reasons why I felt motivated to teach students and professors in my community about “Healthy Lifestyle.” I will take advantage of this lesson as a way to educate my peers and professors using the right teaching techniques about what I already know and feel passionate about. First, I most understand their attitudes towards health and food. From past experiences and research, I have acknowledged that students and professors at college and universities like UM are relatively conscious...
