EVERGREEN WILLOWS

Evergreen Willows, a new convalescent home, had been in operation for several months. The large one-story building, which had been specially constructed for its purpose, was divided into two identical wings, designated A and B wings. In the center of the building, separating the wings, was a large living room, a chapel, offices, and a middle wing which included the kitchen, patients' dining room, and a employees' dining room. Each wing consisted of a nurse's station in the center with a corridor of patients' rooms to each side (see Exhibit 1).
Each nurse's station served the patients for its wing, and each was under the direction of a charge nurse. Other nurses and certified nursing assistants (CNAs, or nurse's aides) worked under the charge nurse. From the opening day, each wing had been staffed separately. The director of nurses had assigned the more experienced older CNAs to "A" wing, where she planned to locate sicker patients. She assigned the less experienced CNAs to "B" wing, which was to have patients who were more ambulatory. Except on rare occasions, A wing staff did not work on B wing, nor did B wing staff work on A wing
.
The day shift on B wing consisted of one charge nurse and four CNAs. Normally the charge nurse was Jenny, a young registered nurse (RN) who had not had any previous experience as a charge nurse before working at the home. On her days off, she was replaced by Sue, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) who worked part-time. The CNAs had rotating days off each week, so that, except when someone was sick and had to be replaced, the same CNAs were usually on duty at the same time. The B wing CNAs were of similar age and experience, having been hired at the same time. All lived in the local community and tended to see one another socially after hours.
Jenny's duties as charge nurse included dispensing medications,

My Dream Home

...Tina Grenon Professor Schmitt English 1101/48 10 September 2012 My Dream Home My dream home that I design will be all that I imagine and more. It will be a three bedroom, Ranch-styled, brick home with a three car garage and a massive double front door. Some of the interior features will include a chef’s kitchen and spa-like on-suites. Outdoors will consist of meandering pathways through colorful shade gardens that lead up to a flagstone terrace that overlooks the in-ground swimming pool. The ultimate chef’s kitchen in my home will have cool black granite countertops lining the walls, breakfast bar, and island. A double-oven and pasta sink is a must for an Italian inspired kitchen. An oversized copper sink with the apron showing would be housed around the breakfast bar for easy access. The warm glow from the pendant lighting surrounding the kitchen with rich copper undertones sets the perfect mood lighting as I cook delicious creations with sinful aromas. Afterwards, I can wash my cares away by visiting one of the spa-like on-suites just off of any one of the bedrooms. Each one includes a walk-in shower with stunning rainfall showerheads and travertine tiles. If I prefer a soak, I can slide into a warm bubble bath in one of the copper claw-foot tubs situated by a picture window overlooking the many gardens. Once my senses have been renewed, I can wander outdoors...

Time to Rebound at Willow Pond

...Time to Rebound at Willow Pond Leadership Case Problem B 1. Why is this case included in a chapter about charismatic and transformational leadership? Willow Pond is on the border line of complete disaster and will take a special type of leadership to pull it together in order to achieve success. A charismatic leader will be able to bring a vision into Willow pond in order to transform it. Prior to accepting the position at Willow Pond Ms. Osaka she spoke directly with staff, owners and those that lived there. This action demonstrates Ms. Osaka’s understanding of communication and listening skills. This is important in this chapter because charismatic and transformational leaders “communicate their visions, goals, and directives” which will help to “overhaul the organization, culture or subculture” (DuBrin, 2013, p. 98). 2. What aspects of transformational leadership should Heather emphasize in her approach to rehabilitating Willow Pond? One aspect that Ms. Osaka’s has already started to implement is communication and listening. An effective leader will listen and implement internal and external resources in order to build upon corrective actions and in a sense she is utilizing supportive leadership. Not only should she use feedback but I feel she should seek feedback from the residents that live in the community as well as the staff that works there. Empowerment would be a great tool for Ms. Osaka to implement because it allows the staff under her to have a say in...

"Journey" in the Wind in the Willows

...Journeys are change from the status quo, a path to something different. Whether it is a journey you take or the journey that takes you, it will lead to new insights, self reflection and a look back to where you’ve come from. In the excerpt of The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame we met a reluctant rat, a fascinated mole and an animated toad. These anthropomorphised creatures exhibit very human traits, such as the want for something new, some more than others. These characteristics and traits that Kenneth Grahame has given the animals invites the reader into an imaginative journey. To suspend their belief, to believe that animals can talk and interact like humans, allowing the reader to connect on an emotional level to the characters. It is suggested that the characters themselves are embarking on a physical journey. Toad unveils a gipsy caravan, a symbol for the nomadic culture. Grahame describes in vivid detail the contents of the caravan, the “biscuits, potted lobster, sardines – everything you could possibly want”. This creates the image in the mind of the reader of everything that one would need to go on a journey. The toad describes the possibilities that come with the caravan “Camps, villages, towns, cities! Here today, up and off tomorrow!” A journey does not need to specifically be something grand or magnificent but something that is different. Something that changes your view; this cannot happen if they do not the leave the river. The toad...

Desert Willow Tree Research Paper

...Au Natural I chose to do the Desert Willow tree because most often we plant trees to provide shade and beautify our planet. In addition those benefits are great but trees also provide other less obvious benefits. I planted my tree in a nice shady area but also sunny as well. I did this so it can get sun in the day but shade as the sun sets. One reason why I planted this tree was to improve our air and planet, I planted this with help from my dad and his green thumb. In addition, my project is important because “it has been shown that spending time among trees and green spaces reduces the amount of stress we carry”. Not only that, but also “trees reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding”. Uniquely “fallen tree leaves can reduce soil temperature and soil moisture loss. Decaying leaves promote soil”. In essence my project is helping...
