Year 10 Geography Assessment Task: Written Report
Australia in its regional and global contexts
Migration
Introduction
Australia is a nation built on the process of international migration. According to the 2011 Census, over a quarter of Australia’s population was born overseas. This indicates that migrants play an important role in Australia’s population growth and the nation’s development. The large proportion of migrants also broadened the cultural diversity in Australia. This report will briefly outline the nature of migration in Australia, the role played by government and non-government organisation (NGOs) in migration, treaties and agreements related to migration, advantages and disadvantages of migration, and social justice and equity …show more content…
This convention defines who is a refugee and also sets out basic rights, which signatory countries should guarantee to refugees. By signing this convention, Australia has international obligations to protect the human rights of all asylum seekers/refugees who arrive in Australia, regardless of how or where they arrive and whether they arrive with or without a visa.
Besides, according to the convention, the UNHCR has a supervisory responsibility in Australia. Although the Australia government decides the yearly quota of refugees accepted into Australia, the UNHCR can review individual cases and make recommendations to the Australia government. However, Fig.2 highlights that the number of migrants entering Australia through humanitarian program has kept at relatively low quota in 1984-2008. This may suggest that Australia migration policy rather changed the quota of family and skilled migrant than the number of migrants through humanitarian program and further suggest that Australia is not willing to increase its quota for

Shake and Erupt

...history and their unpredictable activity continues to shake mankind’s understanding of the planet. This topic or scheme of work for my mixed ability year nine class offers a plethora of attributes that both incorporates sound core Geographic knowledge and divers teaching formats that can present a degree of awe and wonder into the minds of young people. Planning and teaching such a topic at a time when the Geography National Curriculum is being reviewed by the new coalition Government, seems to provide somewhat of a blank canvass as to what pedagogical approaches might be the most appropriate to adopt. Whatever the NC will look like, we are led to believe that there will be a re-focus on the ‘core’ knowledge in subjects like Geography. This is not to say a return to didactic teaching where teachers are merely transmitters of information, or indeed to adopt a textbook pedagogy which is reminiscent of the late 1970s and 1980s. The Geography Curriculum Consultation Full Report makes it clear “That a line-by-line, detailed list of geography’s contents is not the best way to draw a positive response from teachers . . . though there is strong support for the national curriculum achieving greater clarity over the core and essential knowledge contents of geography.” (Geographical Association, 2011, p.2 – cited in Debates in Geography). Having observed lessons in my school for several weeks now, I agree with this emphasis on teaching ‘core’ knowledge contents as I feel as if the...

Assessment of a Scheme of Work

...Assessment could be defined as the “process of gathering, interpreting, recording and using information about students’ responses to an educational task. “(Harlen, Gipps, Broadfoot, Nuttal. 1992. P.214) It is a part of everyday life for all teachers; it is an integral part of teaching and learning and is a basis for planning lessons and schemes of work based on national curriculum. The main function of assessment is to support teachers and learners in achieving their objectives and aims; by providing information about the progress of learners and by helping institutions to improve and perform better. Assessment can sometimes be seen as something extra that teachers have to undertake, outside of their daily routines; such as invigilating exams or taking books home to mark after school; although assessment is not just marking and awarding grades. It involves identifying at what stage of learning each pupil or student is at, as well as highlighting any miscomprehensions within their learning. It is then possible for a teacher to fill these voids of knowledge and plan lessons appropriately by tailoring lessons to the academic needs of the learners. Using assessment is vital for any learning facilitator and it therefore underpinned by the governments teaching standards, which also make assessment very necessary. Teaching standard 6 requires that to “Make accurate and productive use of assessment”. (URL 5) Assessment itself is a very broad term and many variations exist with...

No part of this publication may be reproduced by any means without the prior permission of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. ISBN 0-90892751-7 ii LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT Assessment for the Qualifications Framework Introduction to 2001 edition Learning and Assessment was first published in 1996. It has been in demand ever since and reprinted many times in its original format. The 2001 edition retains the text of the original. The photographs have been omitted to reduce costs and the original Foreward was no longer relevant. We are delighted and a little surprised that there is sufficient demand for a reprint five years on. When we were researching for Learning and Assessment late in 1995 only 40,000 learners were being assessed for the Framework. There were 4,800 registered unit standards and 109 national qualifications. Only 414 providers were accredited and 16 ITOs were able to register workplace assessors. Sixty schools were trialling mathematics and geography standards. There was little practice of any kind, let alone proven successful practice, on which to base advice to assessors. Our scenarios and case studies in computing, small business management, commercial fishing and economics reflected hope and expectation rather than experience. There are now 626,000 learners registered on the Framework; about 200...

...organizations around the world, especially in light of a very slow recovery from the global financial crisis, has amplified the need to provide a better understanding of the specific geographic similarities and differences of IT managerial and technical trends. Going beyond identifying these influential factors is also the need to understand the considerations for addressing them in light of recognizing the respective local characteristics, especially when operating in a globally linked environment, although somehow heavily influenced locally. By comparing and contrasting IT trends from different geographies, this paper presents important local and international factors (e.g., management concerns, influential technologies, budgets/spending, organizational considerations) necessary to prepare IT leaders for the challenges that await them.
