Consciousness is usually defined as awareness of our selves and our environment. We can have different states of Consciousness meaning different levels of awareness and they occur naturally or be induced by external factors such as heroin and other drugs or internal factors such as our own mental effors and other mental skills.
The stage range from alertness to sleep and everything in between. Alertness is most people think about it when they think about being Conscious. When you are alert, you are awake, aware of who you are, where you are, and what is going on your environment. You can focus your attention, encode information and memory engage in conversation all stuff you normally do.

You are not aware of yourself or the world around you when you are asleep. Even though you might be aware of a dream world. We can measure our brainwaves in sleep. It means electroencephalogram or EEG more commonly brainwaves. There are four main type of brainwaves. Alpha, beta, delta and theta. Every different types of brainwaves measure different types of wave styles.
We tend to think of sleep as a time when the mind and body shut down. But this is not the case; sleep is an active period in which a lot of important processing. Exactly how this happens and why our bodies are programmed for such a long period of snooze is still somewhat of a secret. But scientists do understand some of sleep's critical functions, and the reasons we need it for ideal and optimal health and wellbeing.

During Rem sleep (Rapid Eye Movements), brain waves mimic activity during the waking state. The eyes remain closed but move rapidly rolling inside , dream and brain activities that occurs during this stage.

Latent content of dreams : The latent content refers to the symbolic meaning of a dream that lies behind the literal content of the dream. The hidden meaning of dreams played an important role in Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory.
He also believed that bringing the hidden meaning of a dream into conscious awareness could relieve psychological distress
Manifest content of dreams : The manifest content is the actual literal subject matter of the dream while the latent content is the underlying meaning of these symbols.
The activation-synthesis theory is a neurobiological explanation of why we dream.
