The Story of an Hour Assessment
The modern women's movement has spent decades trying to dismember the ideology that the head of a woman is a man. Society has had a centralized idea that a woman should and will submit to the head of the house; the man. This religious ideology has caused a cry of help of many women by the sort of tyranny and abuse women feel being controlled by their partner.
“The story of an hour” represents the feeling of mixed emotions a woman who has been mentally and physically controlled would feel when her spouse has perished. Mrs. Mallard feels an instant feeling of sorrow because she is now alone in the world. This agonizing feeling of loneliness is promptly ended when she understands she is now entirely free. The roles women were challenged with in the 1800s and now face are not polar opposite. This is because the ideology of a womans responsibilities have not changed. A woman must be able offer her husband a child. This has been a requirement in both decades. Although, childbearing wasn’t spoke of in “The Story of an Hour” that’s one thing that could hinder Mrs. Mallard from her new found sense of freedom.
A woman must be responsible for maintaining the household while her spouse is out working. It was written that Mrs. Mallard was at home when she thought her husband died while out working. In modern society, it is shown that a woman must stay home while her husband is out being a ‘bread winner.’
Modern society has a idea the men should lead and guide his family. The ideology includes that a woman should submit to her husband's needs and wants. While in modern society, women have free range to leave a partnership like this, individuals like Mrs. Mallard did not. The only way to escape a demanding relationship like this in the 1800’s was
