1. Is the executive order Trump signed actually a ban on muslims?
President Trump signed an executive order titled: "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States." In the actual content of the executive order, Trump calls for a 90 day suspension of entry into the US from a selected 7 countries who are known to be filled with terrorist organizations. This is not a ban on all muslims, as muslims from other nations like Indonesia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia are not subject to Trump's restriction. In fact, the seven counties put on the list were chosen by the Obama administration when congress passed Obama’s "Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015." This act prevented nationals of these countries from traveling to the

In particular, countries such a France and Turkey have issued a ban on wearing the burqa in public. The ban relates to the general wearing of the burqa and not for certain situations such as identity checks. This debate has spread to Australian soil where dozens of Australians, such as Cory Bernardi, have enunciated their approval and have called for such a ban in Australia. While some countries have similar meaning of the veil, the majority of non-Islamic individuals across Europe and Australia have interpreted the veil in their own way and thus attached to it different meanings causing different perceptions as to why or why not it should be worn. Using the article by Bernardi (2010) as a starting point, I will critique the feeble objections writers of the topic have against the burqa and justify why their reasons for a burqa ban are invalid and cannot benefit society, and if anything, set society backwards. By interpreting...

Islam and Science

...Islam and science The road to renewal THE sleep has been long and deep. In 2005 Harvard University produced more scientific papers than 17 Arabic-speaking countries combined. The world’s 1.6 billion Muslims have produced only two Nobel laureates in chemistry and physics. Both moved to the West: the only living one, the chemist Ahmed Hassan Zewail, is at the California Institute of Technology. By contrast Jews, outnumbered 100 to one by Muslims, have won 79. The 57 countries in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference spend a puny 0.81% of GDP on research and development, about a third of the world average. America, which has the world’s biggest science budget, spends 2.9%; Israel lavishes 4.4%. Many blame Islam’s supposed innate hostility to science. Some universities seem keener on prayer than study. Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, for example, has three mosques on campus, with a fourth planned, but no bookshop. Rote learning rather than critical thinking is the hallmark of higher education in many countries. The Saudi government supports books for Islamic schools such as “The Unchallengeable Miracles of the Qur’an: The Facts That Can’t Be Denied By Science” suggesting an inherent conflict between belief and reason. Many universities are timid about courses that touch even tangentially on politics or look at religion from a non-devotional standpoint. Analysis: The Four Freedom's Speech

...Many US citizens misunderstand Islam and Muslim Americans community. The rise of ISIS and war in association of Muslims juxtaposed 9/11 has made Americans intolerant towards Muslims due to fear and misapprehension towards Islam. Despite the negative connotation American’s presume about Mosques, studies have shown Mosques not only help Muslims assimilate into US culture and society, but also promote positive community involvement socially and politically in American culture. Muslim Americans are afraid and concerned about American terrorist activity and even report criminal activity, deterring or uncovering 40% of domestic terrorist plots in the last decade (Interfaith Alliance). Despite many Muslim Americans allegiance to the US, various writers/hosts from National Public Radio (Gjelten, 2016) have interviewed Muslims in America and the respondents agree they are afraid. They are afraid not only of what extremist Americans can do, but also of extremist Muslims. Many agree Americans fear extremists and if they understood Islam, they would not fear all Muslims. However, it is a cyclical paradox because they are afraid of each other and so neither party will listen to the other’s grievances. According to Roosevelt, neither should have to be fearful, but Muslims are the minority and even Muslim Americans fear Muslim extremists. Since it can be difficult to tell the difference between a practicing Muslim and a practicing Muslim extremist, society is at a standstill, one that...

White Man's Burden Satire

...“Take up the White Man's burden— / Ye dare not stoop to less—/ Nor call too loud on Freedom / To cloak your weariness. / By all ye will or whisper, / By all ye leave or do, / The silent sullen peoples/ Shall weigh your God and you.” reads Ruyard Kipling’s poem, “The White Man’s Burden.” Rudyard Kipling, who was a well-known author around the turn of the century. He was a prestigious college graduate who had won many awards, including the Nobel Prize for writing. This tells us, the readers, that he is a very credible writer. Now, academically, there is much discourse and disagreement in regards to weather the poem is satirical. Many scholars believe that Kipling’s sentiment expressed about Imperialism as genuine, especially considering some of his other work. However, some do believe the poem is satire, and that Kipling is mocking the concept of “The White Man’s Burden.” Regardless of whether or not the poem is satirical, and while disregarding that the poem is directly about the Philippine-American War, “The White Man’s Burden” still shows what pro-Imperialists believed. “The White Man’s Burden” shows modern readers the thought process that lead many Western forces to go to lands they had never been before and systematically destroy a people’s way of life....

Discrimination Against Immigrants

...as the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) and National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), demonstrates that higher immigration is associated with lower crime rates, and that immigrants are less likely than the native-born to engage in criminal behavior. This report perfectly concludes that fears that immigration will lead to an escalation of crime and delinquency are unfounded. Regardless of these facts, America is in the midst of “the great expulsion” of immigrants, even of those who are lawfully present and are non-violent and non-threatening, and often have deep roots in this country. Moreover, across the nation, police departments have made headlines for their mistreatment of immigrants. Immigrants often have to endure inappropriate police behavior, which includes racial profiling, unlawful detainment and stalking. Sadly, it is not just local law enforcement agencies that have been accused of committing acts of police brutality against immigrants but it is also the U.S. Border Patrol. One such highly controversial case was back in 2010, the fatal beating of Anastasio Hernández-Rojas, by the Border Patrol which resulted in his death. After a video of the beating surfaced, several thousands of people protested in hopes of pressuring the Justice Department to take action against the officers involved. This case was recently settled in February 2017, and though a compensation was provided to Hernández’s family, none...

Valentine

...Valentine's Day customs developed in early modern England and spread throughout the Anglosphere in the 19th century. In the later 20th and early 21st centuries, these customs have also spread to other countries along with other aspects of American pop culture, but its impact so far has been rather more limited than that of Halloween, or that of US pop-culture inspired aspects of Christmas (such as Santa Claus). Due to a concentrated marketing effort, Valentine's Day is celebrated in some East Asian countries with Chinese and South Koreans spending the most money on Valentine's gifts. China In China, the common situation is the man gives chocolate, flowers or both to the woman that he loves. In Chinese, Valentine's Day is called lovers' festival (simplified Chinese: 情人节; traditional Chinese: 情人節; pinyin: qíng rén jié). The so-called "Chinese Valentine's Day" is the Qixi Festival, celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. It commemorates a day on which a legendary cow herder and weaving maid are allowed to be together. Valentine's Day on February 14 is not celebrated because it is often too close to the Chinese New Year, which usually falls on either January or February. In Chinese culture, there is an older observance related to lovers, called "The Night of Sevens" (Chinese: 七夕; pinyin: Qi Xi). According to the legend, the Cowherd star and the Weaver Maid star are normally separated by the Milky Way (silvery river) but are allowed to meet by...

Goffman's Thesis on the Stigmatized Body

...SC2027 Sociology of Health Illness and the Body Goffman’s thesis on the ‘stigmatized body’ Word Count: 1,967 Using two contemporary examples, explore Goffman’s thesis on the ‘stigmatized body’. The ancient Greeks used stigma to refer to a fault used to expose something unusual about a person’s moral status, a person bearing this stigma would often be described as a blemished person, ritually polluted, and to be avoided, especially in public places. Christians later divided the metaphor into two separate aspects; the bodily signs of holy grace and the medical allusion, which refers to the bodily sigs of physical disorder. Today the term is described using the original literal sense. (E., Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity, 1990)Erving Goffman describes stigma as “the process by which the reaction of other’s spoils normal identity (Nettleton, 2006). The three forms of stigma recognised by Goffman are; mental illness, a physical form of deformity or an association with a particular race, religion or belief. (E., Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity, 1990). Sociologist, Gerhard Falk defines stigma based on two categories; existential stigma and achieved stigma. He describes existential stigma as “a stigma deriving from a condition which the target of the stigma either did not cause or over which he has little control”. He describes achieved stigma as “stigma that is earned because of conduct and/or because they contributed heavily to...

Torture

...torture as the highest form of truth (Green). Torture was a well-established American tradition (Gewen). Torture can be used to gain valuable information in a timely manner, and other countries at war will not hesitate to use torture against their enemies to gain information. American Police and the U.S. Military have tortured people to gain information and evidence even though it is technically illegal. This shows that America is willing to break laws to gain information. Cruel and unusual punishment is banned in many countries including the United States of America (Torture is a Just Means for Preventing Terrorism). The Geneva Conventions ban the use of violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment, and torture (Torture is a Just Means for Preventing Terrorism). The United Convention Against Torture bans torture of all civilians, combatants, prisoners of war and terrorists (Torture is a Just Means for Preventing Terrorism). The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 5 states,” No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (Torture is a Just Means for Preventing Terrorism). The Convention Against Torture only applies on a country’s own soil, which is why torture of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay is legally acceptable (Torture is a Just Means for Preventing Terrorism). Left Wing Terrorism

...Nevertheless, left-wing terrorism is thought to be making a comeback. The recent shooting of republican representative Steve Scalise is stated as an example of increasing violence from the left. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that more violence may be rising amongst left-wing groups, fueled by the polarization caused by Trump`s election as president. In the United States, left-wing terrorism grew from fragments of the Weather Underground and other groups such as the Students for a Democratic Society. Some like the Symbionese Liberation Army were involved in kidnappings, murders and stealing from banks. Studies conducted in the nineties show that the number of leftist attacks were quite high and accounted for more than seventy five percent of all domestic terrorist strikes (Fortna,...
