...Problems of our Times More than 2/3 of all adults and 1/3 of all children are overweight. Children and youth have learned worse eating habits and are less physically active than they were 25 years ago. If America continues to have this negative lifestyle, more and more people are going to become overweight and life an unhealthy life. The problems in today’s society concerning diet and exercise are the movement around electronic culture and the growth of the fast food industry. Fast food consumption has increased dramatically over the last 25 years. Causes of this increase are due to the fact that there are less home cooked meals and more meals that involve going to get fast food. More and more families rely on fast food because families don’t have a lot of time for sit down meals anymore. Also fast food is a lot cheaper route than going to the grocery store. Another factor concerning an unhealthy diet, in our youth, is that snacking on junk food and sugary soft drinks is becoming more common. Along with fast food consumption, the social aspects of today’s society revolve around electronics and other forms of entertainment. Electronics and television are making a big dent in having a healthy lifestyle. Today’s generation is very attracted towards television, video games, cell phones, the Internet, and etc. instead of going outside. The creation of online gaming through Xbox-Live, Playstation Network, online PC gaming, and many more, are taking a lot of time away from physical...

...| Why Cook? | | | Brian Curtis Maureen DattiloDVUO ENG135 Sec I | 6/5/2010 | | With all the choices of “ready prepared meals”, fast food, take out, and delivery it is easy to ask the question “Why should I cook my own meals?” While one might think that cooking can only get dinner on the table, one might also be wrong. The foods we eat play a crucial role in how our mind and body operate. Through cooking one can make smarter decisions to fuel the mind and body properly, while eliminating deficiencies that can cause an imbalance in the nutrients that are needed for healthy life. Not only is food a detrimental factor to health, it also has deep roots into our social world. Everyone has a fond memory of home cooked meals shared over the dinner table, or pleasant times with friends enjoying a nice meal. These fond memories help build bonds that create our social life and help make us who we are. By cooking meals and sharing them with the people that are important in life it is easy to see that cooking, besides getting dinner on the table, can benefit not only your physical and mental health but also contributes to your social life. Health benefits One of the most obvious benefits to cooking is a healthier life. Instead of eating already prepared foods that are loaded with additives, cooking allows a person to eat food in its natural state. Starting from natural foods eliminates unwarranted ingredients from being introduced to your diet that can have unwanted...

...the Prevention Of Early Childhood Obesity Abstract The overall purpose of this study was to investigate whether parents serve as role models in influencing their children’s weight-related behaviours. Participants were 60 random parents of children from Barbados. Unlike previous research studies, the correlation analyses of this study indicated that the junk food or fast foods children consumed was negatively associated with the amount of income made by the parents or their education level. Although it was found that some children do model their parents’ behaviour when it comes to healthy food choices, the findings show that parents do not enforce the healthy eating practices unto their children. This study did not support the theory that children model adult eating behaviours on their own. Parental Influence: Implications for the Prevention Of Early Childhood Obesity Some researchers in public health have concluded that the problem of early childhood obesity has reached near-epidemic proportions (Deckelbaum & Williams 2001; Puhl & Latner 2007). The problem of early childhood obesity and overweight appears to be on-going without implementation of early detection and prevention strategies (Stegelin 2008). The causes most commonly identified with the increase in early childhood obesity are inadequate physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, and poor diet (Campbell et al. 2006; Ebbeling, Pawlak & Ludwig 2002). Prior...

...Fast food joints are also being seen as a factor that is making a number of families spend less and less time together. Family meal time is something that is considered as an opportunity for all the members to come together and share their experiences. However, the fast food centers are quickly eating into this quality time. This is especially true about youngsters for whom a fast food center is a good place to hangout with friends and peers. In the article “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper,” Mark Bittman reveals that junk food is not cheaper than a home cooked meal. He argues that you could feed your family a home cooked meal for less than it costs to go to McDonalds. For example, he concedes that “two Big Macs, a cheeseburger, six chicken McNuggets, two medium and two small fries, and two medium and two small sodas — costs, at the McDonalds a hundred steps from where I write, about $28....You can serve a roasted chicken with vegetables along with a simple salad and milk for about $14, and feed four or even six people. ...Round is a Shape Dennis R. Mayo, Jr. DeVry University Round is a Shape According to a report from Harvard Medical School, recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics shows that approximately one child out of every three in the United States is overweight (Fighting, 2014). Additionally, a Centers for Disease Control study shows that approximately seventeen percent of children in the U.S. (12.7 million), between the ages of two and nineteen years, are obese (Childhood, 2015). That in itself should be cause for concern. These kind of numbers are very alarming and show just how serious the situation is. What seemed to be a problem that has recently emerged, childhood obesity has been a growing concern for years. How did this happen? What is causing such a catastrophic health concern in our children? Politicians argue the fact that advertisement is to blame as this is an obvious scapegoat. We need to open our eyes to what should be an elementary problem and solution. While there are several contributing factors to this epidemic, poor diet and lack of physical activity stand out as the direct cause. Local leaders and parents must take a more active role to encourage their children to become more active and eat healthier to combat the overwhelming crisis of childhood obesity in the United States. Balanced is a term that should be in everyone’s vocabulary concerning the health of our children. A National Institutes of Health study indicated that obesity is a result...

...College Writing II August 5, 2015 Family Dinners Are Significant For those interested in improving their family’s interpersonal relationship and overall health, say, “goodbye” to take out food and “hello” to home-cooked family dinners. In this modern age and technologically advanced century, people rarely eat at home with their families. In America, many parents work long hours in which it becomes challenging for them to cook home- meals and eat together with their children. Therefore, many families resort to ordering takeout food. For many American families, it is hard to schedule family dinners for reasons that might be because sometimes parents work overtime, or children have some social activities. However, if members of a family put effort to gather for dinner, studies have shown its possible positive effects for family members. Many family meals give a family a chance to talk about happenings of the day, laugh, make family decisions, and enjoy the food in a tide in manner. ...in rush hour traffic, the kids practice runs over, you forgot to lay something out for dinner or you just don’t have the ambition to cook there’s always a variety of options to quickly resolve your trouble. Fast food restaurants have been rapidly growing since the 1900’s and are now a food source we highly depend on as a society. It wasn’t long ago that the standard was for a family to sit down to a home cooked meal. This standard has severally changed over the years. While having the option to pick up dinner on the way home or have it delivered to our door is convenient, at what point do we stop to consider the dangers of consuming a heart-attack in a sack? What once was considered a treat has now become the norm carrying more than just health concerns. Fast food restaurants have become very beneficial over the years by offering us convenience, agricultural stimulus, and slowing increasing their nutritional values, it’s time to consider other ways they effect our society. Eric Schlosser describes fast food best in his book Fast Food Nation The Dark Side of the All-American Meal when he says “It has become a social custom as American as a small, rectangular, hand-held, frozen, and reheated apple pie” (Eric Schlosser, 2002). Fast food has become more then just convenient for us, it has become a dependent. We no longer use fast food as an alternative when time is cut short but rather as a daily regimen. According to Statistic Brain, “50 million people are served fast food daily”...
