If there was one God in Greek mythology it would be Zeus. He is considered the father of the gods and mortals by the Greeks. His roots and overall guidance have been traced back to ancient Indo-Vedic traditions. Zeus and the Vedic sky god, Dyaus, share many similar powers and stories (Smith 189). Zeus is loosely translated to “housemaster” and that is how the Greeks viewed him. The Greek creation stories of Zeus vary widely, but there is one that is generally accepted. Zeus was the youngest son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea and the brother of the deities Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera (Cook v2 17). Throughout the journey as they go to reach Smaug, the group encounters many hardships from orcs, the goblins, to elves. These encounters change Bilbo and his outlook on life. The soldiers in WWI encountered many hardships throughout the war. These hardships irreversibly changed them. One incident in particular that heavily affected Biblo was his encounter with Gollum. Gollum forces Bilbo to play a riddle game with his own life on the line. When Bilbo is at a loss for riddles, he accidentally asks, “What have I got in my pocket?” (Tolkien 74). This serves to confuse Gollum and eventually allows Bilbo to escape. Through this encounter, Bilbo learns that in order to survive on this adventure, he must think outside the box and the rules of society from his normal world no longer apply. When soldiers go off to war, the soon realize that the conventions of the normal world no longer apply. Instead, they must learn new skills in order to survive. As relações BrasilEstados Unidos foram fortalecidas em um momento de instabilidade interna brasileira, decorrente da mudança de regime. Como se verá, Mendonça foi o principal agente diplomático nas relações entre Brasil e Estados Unidos nesse período, assim como teve função importante em momentos de instabilidade interna com reflexos internacionais. Na seção 1 deste trabalho, será verificada a conjuntura brasileira daquela época, a qual restringiu e estimulou as atividades de Salvador de Mendonça junto ao governo americano. A passagem de um governo monárquico para um regime republicano acarretou instabilidades institucionais internas, que colocavam em risco o futuro da recém- proclamada República brasileira. Diante desse cenário, fazia-se premente uma aproximação com os Estados Unidos, tendo em vista o temor de que as monarquias europeias inspiravam aos novos donos do poder no Brasil.
