...April 17,2012 My Favorite Place Through out the whole world, there are plenty of places where people love to go. Some may be a certain area, a store, a home, or even a different country. One place can hold special values to one person. Whether it’s a memory or memories, a feeling, or even just being in the environment. All of it leads up to being a persons “favorite place”. Everyone has a favorite place in their home, a place where he or she can be him or herself. Somewhere you can find peace and harmony. For some it's a quiet place, for others it's a hustling, bustling, full of people and movement place. But all of these places have one thing in common; they are places where you'd run to in times of both joy and stress. There is one place to me that makes me feel like I am the only one in the world. I chose this place because its stress free. It’s the only place in my house where I can be myself. I don’t have to worry about what others have to say. I can lay back and relax on my bed. A lot of times I just lay down and close my eyes and daydream about places I'd like to see or think about things that make me happy. One thing I do not do is think about things I need to get done or anything that makes me feel stressed because then I’ll never feel relaxed. I usually try to stay away from these kinds of thoughts and it usually works out well. Being able to watch whatever I please on my own television. Even playing my Xbox 360, without having to share with my brothers. Having...

...Optical Illusions & How They Work, Bret 9B Truly, the brain is an extraordinary organ that not only shows you what’s in front of you, but also goes above and beyond its call of duty when it finds something it doesn’t understand. Instead of leaving it blank it tries to figure it out. Though it is really quite amazing that our mind can do this, it isn’t always correct. Optical illusions use patterns and colours to deceive our mind, so that what we see may not quite match up with the world around us. When you look at these images try to look at them and try to see the illusion before you read the explanatory paragraph. See if you can discern the differences between the deceptions and reality. The illusion shown below is known as the Ebbinghaus Illusion, made by Hermann Ebbinghaus. This deceptive illusion shows two orange circles, each of them surrounded by blue circles. Large blue circles surrounds one while the other is surrounded by small blue circles. I propose to you...

...After the devastating and nation-shocking murder of the beloved Martin Luther King Jr., a new generation of determined activists came into light. Jane Elliot, an American third-grade teacher, won the National Mental Health Association Award for her research on the effect of outside influences on the human mind. Her research, found on http://www.janeelliott.com, was named “The Blue Eyes-Brown Eyes Exercise.” In this exercise, she told her impressionable students that those with blue eyes were superior to those with brown eyes. She gave the students with blue eyes the characteristics of being more intelligent. Even though she did not treat her blue or brown eyed students any differently, the blue-eyed students began to thrive while her brown...

...UNITY FLAME INVOCATION In the name of the Christ, In the name of the I AM that I AM, I call forth and invoke the full power and the full gathered momentum of the Flame of Unity. I ask that this action be applied to the entire planet and all who live there on. I AM calling for the Unity Flame to consume completely, totally and utterly any and all misuses of consciousnesses in any way, but especially those that are generated, by virtue of claiming that there are differences between people, between conditions; and seeing them instead as all coming from the same wonderful source, and one day to return to that same wonderful fountain of light and love, peace and power. Let God’s Will be done! Let God’s S Will be done! Let God’s Will be done! Amen INVOCATION TO END SUPRESSION OF WOMEN IN THE MIDDLE EAST Oh Great and Holy Mother of us all, Divine One, Who holds us all, not only in the palm of Her hand, but the softest place in Her heart. I come to You this day, entreating and invoking Your direct aide and assistance in ending something on earth, which I find to be offensive and very painful to You. Oh Dear Mother, won’t You help us to overturn this terrible custom of suppression of Your own daughters, especially in the area of the Middle East, where barbaric customs are still continuing till this day. Oh Dear One, I need not remind You of these things, for You are She, who is feeling every one of them directly on Your own body. So I only want to let you know that I...

...idea to put me out of my comfort zone, or driving by a strange new place that I’ve never seen before. Confusion could really hit at any time. Life as a whole is a bunch of years jumbled up into one long, confusing mess. With so many different options of what to believe, who to trust, what foods to like, or what I am comfortable doing, how do I not get confused? As confusing as it is, I love my life, but at the same time, why does it seem that I really ever know what’s going on? Okay, I am aware that virtually every college student is going through some oh-so-terribly-confusing time in their life. So why is it that I feel that nobody understands my confusion? Simply that. It’s mine, not anyone else’s. Since this uncertainty belongs to me and only me, why do I seem to think that my confusion trumps yours? Why do I feel that I am ultimately more important? I have always wondered that when see the color red, somebody else could be seeing what you think of as the color blue and just was always taught that this so-called blue color has and always will be called red? This has intrigued me since a young age, and I can’t seem to come to terms with the fact that I will never understand this. I’m sure there’s some big elaborate scientific explanation on why my red could be your blue, but I choose to believe that my confusion can’t be overcome. Albert Einstein once stated, “Confusion of goals and perfection of means seem, in my opinion, to characterize...

...Sitting on the front porch of his small house on the beaches of the Isle of Mann, my grandfather, Davy, plays his “Gibson ES-335” guitar without an amplifier. The trees blow in the wind as Davy continues to play, uninterrupted by anything in this world. This isle is just off the coast of England and has so much culture and beauty. I’ve only been to this place once, and while we were there we visited many of the great places in England, but that was when I was very young so I do not remember much about it. One day I hope to revisit that place to experience the music, the food, and just the way of life of the people who actually live out there. I wish to have a life like my grandfather Davy did one day. A life where I do not have a worry in the world, a life where I can just sit on the beaches and play my music. My grandfather died one day, not too long after our visit, but sometimes if I close my eyes, and listen closely, I can still hear his guitar playing in the cool breeze, as the waves...

...Beautiful Ocean The above-sea world has many wonderful and beautiful sights. As air-breathing, land dwellers, we can look up during the day and see the enormous bright blue sky with puffs of clouds that look like cotton candy, stars that flicker like little candles at night, and strong, tall oaks that look like skyscrapers. Being above water has many beautiful sights to offer but just where those beauties end another world with its own beauties begins. Scuba diving at a spot near my uncle’s house in Key West takes me to a whole new world. My uncle’s small beach house in Key West is one of my favorite places to visit. His beach house is a sea weed green color, and he hangs old bobbers and fishing poles, decomposing nets, and old brittle fish bones from its green walls. The water in Key West is a vivid turquoise blue that looks like a boat full of paint has spilled in it, and the beaches are as white as powdered sugar. My favorite spot to scuba dive is about a ten-minute boat ride off the coast of Key West. My uncle’s boat takes us out into the deep blue water. It is an old and noisy fishing boat that has traveled around the Florida Keys many times. Hearing the roar of its tired engine, smelling the salt water, and feeling the mist hitting my face from the splashing waves gets me ready to dive in the bright blue abyss. Getting scuba gear on takes a few minutes of tightening many straps and pulling zippers, but when finished, it feels like an extra layer of skin because...

...humming filled my ears. First, the noise started softly, but then it grew louder until it was a steady hum, during that, the screen turned on.” Ready to do homework, I sat down on the brown couch that smelled like a dog. Without attempt, I got comfortable. With my best effort, I leaned over the couch, picked up my black, HP computer, and opened it up. With a little effort, I pushed the silver button, consequently, a white light turned on. The sound of humming filled my ears. First, the noise started softly, but then it grew louder until it was a steady hum, meanwhile, the screen turned on. Quickly, I typed in my 14 character password on the black keyboard and hit enter. The picture of a Steve punching wood with a green, grassy background from Minecraft comes up. When it's loaded I brought my mouse to the right side of my screen and clicked on the Chrome icon on my task bar. The white screen of the google page popped up, I went to google classroom, consequently, it came up with ineligible. With utmost irritation, I clicked on my email then, clicked on my school account. ...Mandi Lurkins October 26, 2010 ENG-105 (12) Ms. Duncan Do Fish Ever Sleep? Brilliant shades of blue, green, yellow, orange and red flashed all around me as I peered into a view of life as we know it. It was as if a box of crayons had exploded, with wonderful accuracy, all around the room creating a kaleidoscope effect on my eyes. This fantasy land gave me the chance to stare face to face at nature’s natural rawness; its awe-inspiring beauty. It was nothing but a bountiful blossom of blooming colors that attracted my eye in more ways than one. I had a strange feeling of being a native in this far distant land with all elements coming forth; earth, air, some artificial fire, and most abundantly water. I was, after all, at the Rainforest Café so this scene only seems fitting. Eating at the Rainforest Café is always a great adventure, but on this particular Sunday it proved to be an eye opener for me. As the lovely hostess sat my family down at our table I began to take in my surroundings more so than ever before. I became lost in the world of tropical plants and animals. To my left was a family of gorillas looking mighty fierce and highly mischievous, especially the youngster swinging about on a vine. Straight ahead of me was a baby grey, and his large tusked mother flapping their ears and trunks about. Finally to my right was the piece that struck me with the most fascination. Perhaps it had to do with the contents inside that were actually real rather than synthetic...

...In this paper, I will evaluate Putnam’s, Turing’s and Searle’s argument concerning computers having consciousness. I will argue that Searle’s argument against computers having consciousness is the stronger argument of the three arguments. Firstly, I will begin by examining the Turing’s and Putman’s argument showing their strengths and weaknesses. Then I will layout Searle’s argument and showing it strengths and weaknesses. Consequently, I will show that although Artificial Intelligence has the capability of producing machines that have humanistic functions, this science however lacks the ability to produce computers with minds. In other words, computers will do a lot, but won’t be a lot. Artificial Intelligence according to the Webster dictionary can be defined as computer programs developed to mimic human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, problem-solving, and making decisions. Artificial intelligence programs enable computers to perform tasks such as playing chess, proving mathematical theorems, etc. The definition of Artificial Intelligence can be further placed into four categories, these are systems that think like humans, systems that act like humans, systems that think rationally and systems that act rationally. Let examine the Turing test; this is test experiment invented by as the name suggests by A.M Turing as a proposal for the question whether machines can think. This experiment is one in which two connecting rooms are arranged each consisting of a teletypewriter...

...Blue was everywhere in your line of vision. On the second trip to Florida it was just my parents and I. The rest of the kids in my family couldn’t make it. That trip we didn’t get to go the beach near as much as we would’ve liked. I had a softball game almost every day. At the tournament there was just this aroma of charcoal from the grill, there was always some kind of cheers and chants going on at all times, and almost every player was constantly eating sunflower seeds. If you’re me they would be dill pickle flavored. My team came out of pool play as the number one seed for that pool, my team and I were completely ecstatic that we were the number one seed. After that we got out of our tournament on our third game of bracket play, but to celebrate being the number one seed my team and I went to Crab Island. Crab Island is a place with a bunch of inflatable things on the water that you go on, and you have to take a boat out to the inflatable thing. Addie and I were going around the telling people they are “you silly salamander!” It was hilarious. By the time we were out of the tournament we only had one more day, until we had...

...Throughout the semester, Professor Henderson has opened student’s minds to a plethora of short stories and videos, but two stories really struck out to me. The stories that challenged my thought process the most were Ernest Gaines’s short story, “The Sky is Gray,” and James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues.” “The Sky is Gray,” by Gaines, is a story around the theme of growing up too soon, from a young man’s perspective. The protagonist, James, is a young child who has to grow up too soon due to his father being away in World War II. James’s mother, Octavia, forces him to give up his childhood in order to help his family survive in the harsh world. On a cold and weary day, James accompanies his mother on a trip into town. While on this...

...(upper mid older w/o kids), Mobility Blues (downscale middle age w/o kids), Park Bench Seniors w/o kids), Second City Elite (upscale older w/o kids) and Sunset City Blues (lower mid older mostly w/o kids). C.) The PRIZM Segment that I chose is Mobility Blues. I chose Mobility Blues because it the only one out of the top five that I felt even remotely came close in reference to myself. Mobility Blues describes young singles/single parents. A working class neighborhood racially mixed between the ages of 30 and under. This PRIZM Segment lives a modest lifestyle because of the lower income blue collar jobs. It has been shown that their activities consist of movies, playing basketball and shooting pool. D.) The description matched to the ZIP CODE I chose does and does not fit what I believe I know about the area in my opinion. I agree to a certain extent because the statistic (survey) is correct with the age criteria (30 and under), my area is definitely of working class and racially mixed. However I do believe that we make money than what is noted. From the look of my neighborhood (homes and apartments) and the vehicles that are driven I would say that our life styles are decent, very adequate. As far as activities everyone has their own interest but overall I agree with the activities listed in addition to gymnastics, karate, dance, and baseball….the activities that we pay for our children to participate in. Lastly the description of my area being people mostly without kids...

...Karen Caston American Literature Katie DeLaney Synthesis Essay (Final) INEBRIATION AND ADDICTION Inebriation and addiction are often noted in the writing and poetry of some postmodern authors. In the poetry of Allen Ginsberg “Howl”, short stories by James Baldwin, “Sonny’s Blues” and Raymond Carver, “Cathedral” talk of alcohol and addiction exist. Reading the poetry of Ginsberg and the story by Baldwin, obvious references are made to inebriation and addiction, more subtle notations are described in the work by Carver. In the story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver the narrator drinks too much and seems unable to effectively communicate with his wife. Drinking and smoking marijuana goes on throughout the story telling. The short story “Cathedral” portrays individuals isolated from each other for various reasons. It appears that the maladies suffered by the narrator and wife provide reasons for inebriation and addiction. For example,” So when the time rolled around, my wife went to the depot to pick him up. With nothing to do but wait—sure, I blamed him for that—I was having a drink and watching the TV when I heard the car pull into the drive. I got up from the sofa with my drink and went to the window to have a look”. The narrator begins to drink while waiting for his wife and the blind man to arrive from the train station. In this quote the first indication of drinking start. As the story progresses drinking and marijuana smoking occurs throughout. Drinking...
