...Renaissance & Baroque Arts The Renaissance, also known as the period of “rebirth”, directly followed the Middle Ages. Some considered the Renaissance period as a bridge from the “Dark Ages” to the modern era or the “light”. This period in history lasted about four centuries—late 13th century to the early 17th century— featuring “a revival of classical art, literature, philosophy, architecture, and learning” and introduced some of “the finest artists and intellectual achievements in the history of the Western humanities” such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo Buonarroti (MindEdge, 2013). Renaissance art is traced back to Italy where artists and scholars looked to the ancient Greco-Roman culture for inspiration by reviving the language, values, and traditions that were lost after “the fall of the Roman Empire in the sixth century” (A&E Television Networks, LLC, 2013). Furthermore, Renaissance artists added individuality to their works through portraying “beauty and mystery of the natural world” (A&E Television Networks, LLC, 2013). Most of the art produced during this time showcased religious imagery, completed mostly as Catholic Mass altarpieces. Artists around these times were sponsored by patrons of the arts such as The Catholic Church and affluent families such as the Medici family in Florence. Political permanence, growing wealth, and technological advancements are some of the social conditions that may have contributed to the arts of the Renaissance era...

...Although our country still remains conservative as compared to the West, the prevalence of Skin Art here in the Philippines is still unstoppable. Filipinos of the latest generations have gradually started opening up to embrace a whole new subculture---a subculture that is more experimental with art, music and sports. Crews and crews of Graffiti artists as well as Skaters are flourishing, Local bands are reaching new heights, and of course, the Industry of Tattooing is growing by the minute. The word tattoo was said to have two major derivations. From the Polynesian word “Ta” which means “to strike something” and from the Tahitian word “Tatau” which means “to mark something”. Archaeologists across the globe have unearthed preserved corpses and mummies that are tattooed. These mummies are said to have lived thousands of years ago, and most of the bodies bore tattoos that signify their cultures, ranks and beliefs. According to research, tattooing has been in activity to many countries such as Japan, Egypt, China, Polynesia, New Zealand, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Africa, Ancient Greece and Rome, America, England, France, and the Middle East thousands of years ago. It is arguably claimed that tattooing has existed since 12,000 years BC and it is as diverse as the people who wear them. The purpose of tattooing varies from culture to culture and its place on the time line. Tattoos have served as rites of passage, marks of status or rank,...

...panels is a globe of Creation of the World. In it there is what looks like plants, mountains, etc. On the upper left hand corner there is what appears to be a small man. Perhaps this could be God himself peering down as the earth is being created? On the first of the inner panels (when looking from left to right) is a peaceful scene showing God bringing life to Eve and Adam. Adam and Eve, while looking at each, other are not touching in the image. Possibly to imply that this is a time before sin. Another eye-catching piece within this panel is the pink fountain with an owl in the center. Owls are sometimes used to symbolize wisdom, since God is supposed to be wise. The central panel The Garden of Earthly Delights is a lot more busy, and the first thing I see is that physical contact and emotion between humans is taking place, unlike the first panel, which indicates that sin is being brought into the picture. To me this panel represents the free spirited lifestyle that humans have been known to live throughout history. The third panel is Hell. It displays people being tortured for their sins that were displayed in the second panel. The bird like creature eating sinners and then disposing of them down a hole can be seen as a symbol as the loss of life. Around the hole in which the bird is disposing of the sinners is a man being force to puke up his food, a symbol for man taking advantage of the precious food god has provided them. There is also another body across from him defecating...

...Ahmadou Ahido gained independence for his people by uniting the formerly British Southern Cameroons with French Cameroun to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon (Chika Okeke-Agulu). At this time Tayou was pursuing a career in law hoping that is would lead to a kind of purity. He later fled the profession after realizing the system was corrupt and turned to an old passion of his, art. Tayou stated, “when I was young I wrote and I drew. It was my way or rebelling.” (Bellmann) Beyond being part of his own life Tayou’s works today is based on the premise that art cannot be separate from life. Pascale Marthine Tayou is a chameleon able to change between many tiles such as sculptor, drawer, installator, performer, and video artist as well as a poet, writer, director and actor in his own plays and films (Bellmann) . His works might individually seem formless and out of control, viewed together in an instillation his works are like a series of interconnected dynamic networks that also like the chameleon blend together to create one message. Through Pascale Marthine Tayou postcolonial, modernist contemporary African art our society is reflected and in doing so our morals are challenged to seek love over all else. As a self trained artist Tayou career began with drawing; in 1995 he created a series of sketches based on Karl Marx’s Das Capital. ...Body modifications have been practiced all around the globe for over hundreds of years. One modification that was and still remains extremely popular today is scarification. Scarification comes from the Latin word “scarificare” which literally means “to scratch open” (Ojo 2008: 355). The process may involves branding, burning, freezing, or cutting into the skin to intentionally influence wounds that create designs, pictures, or words. Scarification among tribes is typically practiced in order to be accepted in the society, attain beauty, and become one with the spiritual world. One way that scarification is used is to identify each other in a certain tribe. The people of West Africa use facial scarification to identify one another from a certain...

...issues related to technology, we cannot say that it is fully true or false, but both the perspectives can co-exist. On the minus side, the new ways of communication have some obvious disadvantages. According to a leading american sociologist, the social networks are actively “usurping” our world and isolating us from the real human interactions. For example, many opponents of Facebook and Twitter believe that modern people become alienated from each other by the increasingly dehumanizing lifestyle, in which these new means of communication have the dominant role. There are many young people addicted to this art of digital contact so they prefer it instead of real face-to-face communication. Unfortunately, such people often have problems when communicating in the “real life”. Furthermore, the normal human-to-human contact comprises verbal, non-verbal and facial expressions. So body language is really important when we aim to get to know each other. But how is it possible to make use from this powerful tool...

The term globalisation is one that is used with ever increasing frequency as if it had a universally accepted meaning and definition. According to Modelski, globalisation is a historical process which is characterised by a growing engagement between peoples on all corners of the globe (Modelski, 2003, pp.55-59). However, as Heywood points out, it can refer to various things such as processes, policies, strategies, an occurrence or an ideology. He suggests, its elusive meaning lays in the fact that it “is not so much an it as a them” (2007, p.143). The reason for the elusiveness of the term is...
