Course Description and Objectives:
ACCTG 415/615 is the second part of Intermediate Financial Accounting. This course builds upon materials learned in previous financial accounting courses including ACCTG 311 and ACCTG
414/614. The focus of this course is on accounting for financing, liabilities and equity, and related income measurement, and disclosure with an in-depth examination of complex measurement issues.
Together with ACCTG 414/614, Intermediate Financial Accounting covers virtually every important corporate reporting topic. Students are expected to master the vast body of knowledge on accounting for activities of an enterprise and preparing accounting information.
A professional accountant’s expertise depends on both technical skill and professional judgment.
During this course, students are expected to work towards developing the expertise through a lot of quantitative practice and a thorough understanding of the rationale (conceptual basis, assumptions, facts of circumstances, etc.) for each accounting method.
This is a difficult course. For each topic covered, there will be two or three lectures that will progressively cover more difficult and technically challenging material. If you do not understand the earlier material, then you WILL NOT be able to understand the later lectures. In the past, students who failed to keep up with the course materials throughout the semester did very poorly on the exams.
Please raise questions at an early stage - either in class or during my office hours.
This course incorporates the Leaning Goals of the BCom Program; in particular, Critical Thinking and
Quantitative Skills.
Prerequisite: ACCTG 414/614 or ACCTG 412 with a minimum grade of C-.

The final grades in the course will be based on a combination of absolute achievement and relative performance. The letter grades will be assigned to the percentage marks in accordance with University
Regulations [Section 23.4(4) of the University Calendar].

Exams:
All exams are closed book. You will have to write each mid-term exam and 2 hours to write the final exam. You will have to write each mid-term exam in the section you registered. You are responsible for all assigned materials, including handouts, articles posted on Blackboard, and any additional materials introduced in class unless I explicitly exclude it. In particular, I strongly suggest that you attempt all recommended questions at the end of each chapter.
A student who wishes his/her exam to be re-evaluated must submit the request within 5 business days after the exam is returned.
Please bring your student ID card or other acceptable photo identification on the day you write an exam. Absences from Exam:
In the event that a mid-term exam is missed for an acceptable reason, no make-up exam will be given.
Instead, the credit assigned to the missed exam will be reallocated to the final exam.
Once you have written an exam, marks will not be reallocated due to explanations given after the fact.
Therefore, if you are too ill to write an exam, please do not attempt to write it.
If a student is absent from the final exam, he/she must obtain permission from the School’s
Undergraduate Office to write a deferred final exam. If a deferred final exam is required for this course, it will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, 1:00PM – 3:00PM.

Class Attendance:
It is your responsibility to attend class. If you miss class for any reason, you are still responsible for all materials covered, announcements made, and handouts provided. I will not e-mail handouts distributed in class to students. So if you miss class, you will have to either come to my office to get the handouts or have another student pick them up for you.
There will be no class on February 15 (Family Day), February 17 (Reading Week), and March 28
(Easter Monday).

Classroom Conduct:
Any student who is disruptive during class will be required to leave. Students are expected to arrive in class before the class begins and to stay until the class is over. Continual talking will not be tolerated as it is disruptive to both the instructor and fellow students. All personal communication or entertainment devices must be turned off during the class time.

Code of Student Behavior:
The University of Alberta is committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty.
Students are expected to be familiar with these standards regarding academic honesty and to uphold the policies of the University in this respect. Students are particularly urged to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the

Epidemiology of Asthma

...which causes episodic wheezing, shortness of breath ,chest tightness, and coughing. Asthma effects people of all ages, backgrounds , religion and gender. According to one article no one risk factor is responsible for asthma morbidity; rather asthma risk factors include living in poverty, in the inner city being uninsured or Medicaid enrolled and being African American. (Kimberly P Toole, 2013) Asthma is a significant health problem in the United States and Massachusetts. Asthma is one of the most common chronic childhood illnesses in the United States where prevalence nearly tripled from 3.6% in 1980 to 9.1% in 2007. Asthma impacts both society and the individual causing millions of lost school days. (Woodin, Tin, Moy, Palella, & Brugge, 2010) Nationally the total cost of asthma in 2007 was 19.7 billion dollars, in Massachusetts the total charges for acute care hospital utilization for asthma was over 136 million dollars in 2006. (Zotter & huisingh, 2009). According to the CDC 1:11 children have asthma in the U.S., that amounts to seven million children in 2010 and the prevalence of asthma is increasing in the United States and in Massachusetts. Studies done by the CDC indicate that in children more boys than girls have asthma. The surveys also indicated that socioeconomic status plays apart in asthma prevalence. Families with an annual household income of 75,000 dollars or less are more likely to have asthma than families with higher incomes. Black children are...

What are the most important factors that influence the results of a port and the amount of customers and suppliers they attract. This will include exogenous as well as endogenous components. The focus will be on the ports of Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Rotterdam because their locations are close to each other and on the first view they serve a similar market, which makes them comparable. To completely understand the performances of these ports, it is important that we have a short background of the ports and how they are evolving. This will be explained in the general information topic. Thereafter we will have a look at their geographical locations, the connection with the hinterland, their services they offer and the legal background. 2. General Information 2.1 Port of Antwerp ...

How Did Anthony Influence The Renaissance Government

...  During the eventful era of the Renaissance, many families rose to princely power over Italian cities.  Most of them did so by force of arms, assassination, or subterfuge, and the heads of these families made no attempt to disguise the absolute nature of their rule.  The Medici of Florence were a notable exception. The most eminent of all in their princely patronage of art and literature, the Medici rose chiefly by their intelligent use of wealth derived from commerce and banking.   Giovanni de' Medici (1360–1429) was the real founder of the wealth and power of the family. His son Cosimo (1389–1464) conducted a vast banking and commercial business through his branch houses in Rome, Venice, Geneva, Brugge, London, and elsewhere. At...

Stijn Streuvels En Ausonius' Mosella

Deleting Oncogenes in Cancer Cells with Dna Strand Slippage

...Deleting Oncogenes in Cancer Cells with DNA Strand Slippage Abstract Oncogenes are DNA sequences which code for proteins that can cause cancer. Therefore, one way to treat cancer is to disrupt or destroy these genes. Lars Zender and colleagues recently discovered two genes that are the most likely causes of liver cancer (1). Zender claims oncogenes cIAP1 and Yap promote tumor growth, and are overexpressed in liver cancer cells. Garcia-Diaz and coworkers have also found that the slipping of DNA strands during synthesis by DNA polymerase can cause single bases to be deleted (2). Applying conditions for this slippage to the replication of the oncogenes in liver cancer cells will cause base deletion and render the gene unable to encode a protein that promotes tumor growth. The experimental control will be DNA sequences matching the oncogenes that will be treated with DNA polymerase λ due to its high rate of base deletion (2). A second experimental control will be DNA treated with DNA polymerase μ. The negative control will consist of untreated DNA. The crystallization process used by Garcia-Diaz and colleagues to uncover the structure of the polymerase and DNA will be used to determine which DNA bases, if any, are deleted. The oncogene will become unable to promote tumor malignancy if its bases are targeted for deletion. Background Zender applied genome analysis to human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, or liver cancer cells, and mouse liver tumors to determine...

Augmented Reality

...Chapter 3 Augmented Reality – Where it Started from and Where It’s Going Veronika Szucs, Silvia Paxian and Cecília Sik Lanyi Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/59796 1. Introduction This study provides an overview of augmented reality (Augmented Reality, AR) and some of its important and popular areas of application. Augmented reality technology integrates 3D virtual objects into a real 3D environment, in real time. This book chapter presents the areas of everyday life where AR can be used (including, but not limited to): medical informatics, production repair, visualization, route planning, entertainment and military applications, marketing tasks and education. The basic characteristics of AR systems, the need for compro‐ mise in their applicability, and optical and video mixing approaches are presented in the chapter. The chapter introduces the two main areas of sensor errors, which are considered as a basic problem during the design of efficient augmented reality systems. We summarize how the current devices are able to solve these problems.
