Directions: Think about individual products and the company that makes them. Describe three generations of that product (past, present, and future). Then in a multipage write-up, answer why was there change, what changed, and what will be the challenges and issues (business and technical) of the future generation.

On September 12, 1966, General Motors first displayed a preview of their next generation car, the Camaro. There were two main reasons why General Motors came out with this car. First, General Motors was trying to create a new type of car to satisfy consumer’s desire for a strong and faster type of car. Second, it was General Motor’s way to compete with Ford’s new Mustang. When the Camaro first came out, it was classified as a compact car. However, they later changed the classification to a pony car, and it has been seen more as a touring car, sports car, or muscle car. Along with the changes in names, there have also been many changes in style, technology, features, and specifications. General Motors is now in production of their 5th generation Chevrolet Camaro. On January 6th, 2006, General Motors started brainstorming ideas and concepts for this new generation car with a new body, wheelbase, engine, transmission, suspension, and much more. After two years of designing, engineering, manufacturing, and problems, on July 21, 2008, General Motors officially unveiled the production of the 2010 5th generation Camaro. This new generation Camaro was able to enhance or surpass most, if not all, of the 4th generation’s features. Starting off with the body, the 5th generation created a slicker, more aerodynamic, and arguably a more appealing body. Then they created a 110.5 in wheelbase, which was 9 in longer than the previous generation, which gives more stability at higher speeds as well as helps the car preform higher on inclined and declined surfaces. Also, they included a higher powered, more efficient 6.2L V8 engine with active fuel management equipped with your choice of a 6 speed manual or automatic transmission, while the older generation had an inferior engine with only the choice of 4 speed automatic or 6 speed manual transmissions. Next, they included independent rear and front suspension for a smoother ride and larger disc brakes from increased handling and safety. There are many other changes that were made, but the thing to note is why all these changes were made. First, consumers constantly have a desire for a better, more efficient, and more powerful car. Second, as technology increase, the cars are updated and changed. Third, there are more regulations cars must satisfy and they achieve this through their evolved improvements. Even though the 5th generation Camaro completely dominates its 4th generation counterpart, that does not mean, the 4th generation Camaro wasn’t an amazing car. When the 4th generation came out in 1993, in incorporated all of the state of the art specs of its time. This Camaro had one of the top ranked engines of its time and the brand new 4L60E, electronically induced, automatic transmission. They also equipped it with a new dual catalytic converter as well as a high performance on-board diagnostic system, the OBD-II. However, in 2002, sales started declining to the point where General Motors was considering canceling the production of the Camaro, and production was actually paused for seven years while they reconstructed the Camaro to create the 5th generation. As great as the 5th generation Camaro is, technology is still advancing and people’s expectations are still increasing, which is why General Motors plans to come out with their 6th generation Camaro in 2016. The main technical problems with this new design is consumers want a lighter but stronger car, so what they are planning on doing is using lighter and stronger composite materials to cut down on weight, and as for the performance, they plan to use either a V6 turbo engine, due to its light weight and high fuel efficiency, or a 5.5L V8 direct injection engine due to its incredible power output, which either would be equipped with a dual clutch transmission that can handle up to 590lb-ft of torque. As far as the business problems go, they need to be able to compete with the new Ford Mustang in performance, customer satisfaction, and price. As far as price goes, the Camaro is able to produce more output per dollar, but the high end Mustang is more powerful than the high end Camaro, but one of the biggest things Camaro needs to work on to compete is their weight. Mustang is a lighter car than Camaro, which from both a business and performance standpoint is a major draw back. So with General Motor’s new 6th generation Camaro, they plan to produce a stronger, lighter, and more efficient car to exceed everyone’s expectations and create a new standard of designing, engineering, manufacturing, output, and performance.

A Life Lesson Learned

...getting ready to go out after work I started making the plan to pick up our friend Pete. For some reason choosing to take out my 98 Camaro Z28 instead of my more conservative Jetta seemed like a good idea. Why did I choose the Camaro? Why that was a bad idea? These are the questions I should have asked myself. It was a short ride to Pete’s place. When I arrived there I hung out a bit, “pre-gaming” with Pete and heading out to the party. Mistake one choosing to take a race car to a party that I planned on drinking at with a passenger and not having a plan if I couldn’t drive home. Our good friend Eric was having a Luau at his girlfriend’s house for his 23rd birthday party. A lot of our mutual friends from school and work were all there. At the party they had live music on a make shift stage which I thought was pretty cool. There were many festivities to partake in including an open bar and playing a few drinking games. After a few hours the party was winding down so it was time to leave. Pete and I decided to invite a few people back to my place and make a grand exit. This was mistake two leaving a party without realizing that I probably should not be driving so soon and not being aware of my surroundings. As we left the party my buddy Pete looks over and says to me, “let’s see what this car can do.” I won’t go into detail to much about my Camaro, so as to get off track. I will say though, I didn’t need to invest a whole lot of money to make it very...

Millionaire Next Door

...chapter stated that more than half of the surveyed millionaires have never earned as much as a dollar of inheritance, and less than ten percent of the millionaires thought they would never earn another dollar of inheritance. I liked this chapter for setting the record straight on what millionaires actually are. A section I really didn’t care for in this book and probably disliked the most was the “You Aren’t What You Drive” section. From the chart on page 114 it was clear to me that I didn’t like this part of the book. The average price paid for a motor vehicle seemed to be around 30,000 dollars by these millionaires. I happen to know that there are a lot of very fancy looking vehicles that can be bought at this price. The Chevy Camaro, a really nice pickup truck, the Ford Mustang, the Scion FR-S to name a few. These cars can all be bought brand new or a couple years old for the average price spent by the millionaires surveyed. This section tried to make it seem like the millionaires are driving low quality vehicles when they ranked the top cars driven I see that they drive Lincoln’s, Cadillac’s, nice SUVs, etc. The cars the millionaires are driving aren’t the Lamborghini’s or Porches’ that society puts them in, but they certainly aren’t driving bad vehicles. Some principles I found very memorable in this book are the idea of millionaires mostly being very frugal, the rules for affluent parents, and investment planning. Throughout...

Dream Car

...car would be a 1969 Chevy Camaro with a 350 engine and a four speed transmission. The name "Camaro" came from a French word for friend. The decision on the name came down to the last minute, with most of the world sure the car would be named, "The Panther." But the name Camaro fit in with other Chevy names- Corvette, Chevelle, Chevy 2, and Corvair. The main reason the Camaro was introduced was because of the huge success of the Ford Mustang. The Camaro was roughly the same size as the Mustang, a little wider and based more on high performance. The Camaro is one of the last remaining muscle cars still in production today. It is only fitting that buyers still expect maximum performance from their Camaros. It is that expectation that has kept the Camaro alive for all these years, while many other cars have faded away, lost in memory. The Mustang GT only offered the 289- cubic inch or a 390- cubic inch V8 in 1967. The Camaro rolled out with 302, 327, 350, and 396 cubic inch V8's The Camaro's style was much smoother as well. The introduction of the Camaro threw pony car (Mustang) development into frenzy. Before the Camaro, the Mustang and Barracuda were not quite considered full muscle cars. Most serious performance enthusiasts still opted for intermediate sized GTO's or the Chevelle Super Sports (SS). The Camaro changed the image of those sport coupes. The Z28 and the stout SS-396 were more than just a stylish ride. Under the hood Camaros were well respected. Such respect...

Product Critique

...2013 Chevy Camaro I. The Chevrolet has an abundant product family that is versatile across the entire automobile spectrum. Chevrolet offers any type of car that is on the consumer market, with the Camaro as their affordable sport car selling at a basic price of $23,000. The Camaro is an affordable and economical rear-wheel-drive performance sports car with a V-6 or V-8 engine. The Camaro is a two door coupe that seats four people comfortably with an estimated 30 miles per gallon. The Camaro can be classified as a red ocean as it competes directly with other retro-inspired muscle cars, including the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang. This car is geared for optimal customer user experience. The powerful engine and old American muscle car style gives the user a full exclusive sports car experience. For Chevrolet, safety is extremely important to their brand. The innovation of having high performance headlights with multiple air bags helped give the car the rating of a perfect NHTSA Crash Test Ratings of 5 stars. II. The Chevy Camaro is targeted and segmented to a specific market because there is a particular customer group who is interested in this product. For starters, Chevy cannot start marketing and targeting families with children because this car would be impractical for that situation. It would be just as impractical for Chevy to target businesses and market this car as a flexible all work condition vehicle. This car is clearly a sports car, and should be...

Blue oceans denote all the industries, not in existence today- the unknown market space untainted by competition." (Kim & Mauborgne, 2004, p. 82(10), 76–84.). Movie theaters are one example of a Red Ocean. Initially, individuals would watch movies at a drive-in movie theater that later progressed to indoor movie theaters where customers were given the opportunity to purchase foods and beverages. In attempts to outperform standard movie theaters, iPic Entertainment, LLC created iPic movie theaters which offers movie goers a luxury movie theater experience by offering a chef-driven menu instead of standard movie theater concession stands, comfortable lounge chairs, blankets, and pillows while watching movies, and a lounge area where customers can purchase mixed drinks and cocktails. ...Eco 202 12/09/2009 Demand for GM The recession has many companies struggling to stay afloat as the demand for many products has drastically declined. While very few companies have gone unaffected by the recession car manufactures have been hit harder then most. With plants all over the country shutting down just so the company can get by, but even with all the layoffs and closed plants it was just not enough for some. GM was one such company being driven to declare bankruptcy GM was then restructured with help from the government and given the chance to try again. Now GM must find ways to increase demand for their cars and beat out the competition. What is demand and why is it important? Demand is how much a product or service is desired by consumers. (Economics Basics) Demand is important because with out demand companies would not be able to exist because they would have no customers. Because the demand for a company’s product is so important being able to manage that demand becomes an important part of business planning. When managing demand a company ultimately wants to be able to set a price that will attract the highest amount of customers while still being able to make a profit. The company also wants to make sure that demand does not exceed the supply and that it is not less then the supply. Making sure the company can keep up with supply and maintaining the demand for that supply can be a difficult task. Keeping up a demand for its vehicles...

Culture of Automobile Advertising

...such as teen drivers. Persuasive techniques as described in our course textbook (Campbell, 2012) would include the “plain-folks pitch” whereas Volkswagen uses the slogan “Drivers Wanted” to lure ordinary people to acquire their vehicles (p.337). Another type of persuasive technique would be to use the “famous person testimonial” technique whereas a famous person that the consumers can relate to or perhaps even look up to would suggest certain products in order to persuade the consumer to be “like” the person in the commercial. An example would be the commercials that Tony Stewart performed in to promote “Armor All” and the Chevrolet Camaro. This commercial suggested that Tony Stewart (famous Nascar driver) used Armor All for his Camaro and was so infatuated with the product that nothing else matter when he was admiring his freshly cleaned Camaro. Even though this commercial was for Armor All products, the automobile company benefited from being present in this commercial. Another automobile leader, Kia, found that using popular, snappy music and cartoon-like characters would be beneficial to the advertising of their car “Kia Soul”. They used animated hamster characters with “hip” clothing to promote influential...

...reliability. Let’s not forget that not long ago, American-brand cars didn’t enjoy a good reputation, especially in terms of interior quality, overall fit and finish and engine performance and fuel economy. So what is happening now with the U.S. auto industry? Consumer Reports editors believe American automakers have generally caught up with their Japanese and European competitors in recent years, the quality of American cars has vastly improved in recent years. Consumer reports have rated a number of American cars, especially Fords, as highly as the best cars from Japan. My First Car

...Since those needed to be replaced we bought all new high performance parts for the motor. It took six weeks for all the parts to show up. We had sent the heads off to be checked to see if they were either cracked or warped and then we started to put the motor back together,. About three days later the machinist had called to let us know that one of the heads was warped. Luckily my cousin had some spare heads. After we got it all put back together we had it DYNO tested. We got the results of the test about fifteen minutes later, it was pushing 650 horsepower at the flywheel, and had 550 foot pounds of torque. It had made all the sweat and blood from our scraped knuckles, worthwhile. The transmission and driveline came out of a 1969 Chevy Camaro. I had to send the driveline in to have a new yolk put on, and I also bought a B&M star shifter for it. After we put those in it was a complete car once again. After 5 months of working on the car, it was ready to be started. I started it up and listened to the low rumble...

...1964 Aston Martin DB5, Goldfinger James Bond's legacy of famous cars and far-out gadgets can be traced back from one car — the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 007 driven in Goldfinger and Thunderball. Without any Bond spy modifications, the Aston Martin DB5 is a work of art. But it's the special effects that have made this car quite possibly the most beloved movie car of all time. The long list of cool tricks included ram bumper, machine guns, ejector seat, smoke screen, oil-slick sprayer and more. Looking back on the Aston from today's perspective, the most interesting feature may be the map screen in Bond's car, which foreshadowed today's navigation systems. So just how influential and significant is the original Bond car? One of the few Astons used in those movies sold last year for a whopping $4.6 million. 1977 Pontiac Trans Am, Smokey and the Bandit When Smokey and the Bandit director Hal Needham, chose a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am to star in his movie alongside Burt Reynolds and Sally Field, he couldn't have predicted the impact that car would have on America. The Trans Am actually looked more or less the same for more than a half decade before the film debuted. But that didn't matter. When audiences saw that Trans Am slide around corners, leap over broken bridges and evade Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason) for hundreds of miles, they wanted a black and gold T/A in their garage. After the movie debuted, sales leapt by about 30,000 cars from 1977 to 1978 and by another...
