Conference Room Disaster
Case Study Analysis

Assuming the day would have been a typical and normal working day was a complete incorrect assumption as the meeting in a crowded conference room is cancelled due to the ceiling giving way to a water leakage, flooding the working papers and electronics that were on the conference room table. Staff members rushed out into the dry hallways leaving the working papers and electronics on the conference room table to be drenched with water. The working papers are most possibly facing complete turmoil of the data that was to be discussed and the electronic equipment’s could be substantially damaged by the water flood. Many thoughts came to my mind such as did anyone save the documents on an external storage drive? Or, did anyone from maintenance perform a routine maintenance check of the water plumbing in the building? And, did the company leaders ever implement some sort of a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) for when such disasters occur in working environments that encompass physical and intangible working documents and data? All these questions flooded my mind more than I could imagine the water to have flooded the conference room. These questions resulted from the problems that occurred and each problem that we faced could have had higher severity in damages. The problems that were incurred were due to prior problems that were built upon newer problems. The first problem that I thought of that could have existed was the routine maintenance checks of water plumbing that must be done annually for commercial properties. Since, there was no indication of such a check being completed it leads myself and the team members to assume that the water leakage could have been prevented if there was a routine maintenance check of the water plumbing. Subsequently, the first problem led to the next in which the company failed to exemplify a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) to be in place for when such disasters occur in working environments. In describing as to how the staff members failed to save the working papers and electronics but instead evacuated the conference room to the dry halls exemplifies faults in the protocols of what to do during such disaster occurrences. Another problem that I thought was where was the adequate training that should have been provided by our company executives during such emergencies. We clearly failed to exemplify any type of training we may have received supported by our actions in evacuating the conference room to the dry halls. In conducting a business risk analysis, one should have the appropriate and adequate knowledge to identify future threats and weaknesses that can harm business operations as the water leakage disrupted our meeting. The company executives should take our incident as a learning opportunity to ensure we are well prepared for future disasters through adequate training and appropriate plan of actions that may be addressed in a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP). Getting pass the incident, company executives and leadership roles should take the immediate criticism by the staff members such as myself or others in preventing future disasters by adopting a DRP plan that will ensure preventive measures are being taken by company executives, maintenance department, and those leadership roles implementing the plan for proper execution of the DRP to avoid such disasters. As part of decision making skills, management must explore every possible threat to their business functions however, it seems as though management did not make efficient and effective decisions that could have been prevented. Due to so many variables and factors that impact the decision making process such as costs, overhead time, and human resource it may be possible that our leadership team purposely did not go in depth in creating such DRP plans as they may have thought it would have been too costly or too many human resources may be inefficient for a low risk disaster. Regardless, alternative decisions could have been made in order to prevent such a catastrophe of data and equipment loss that now the company most likely will be incurring. References

...located in the Port Huron Industrial Park on 16th Street. They are a small company with about 75 employees. Their main product is the patented "Propeller Beanie". They manufacture this item at the Port Huron facility. Currently they have only a few PC's installed, but their technology plan envisions that most employees will work with PC's in the future and that everyone will communicate via an intranet.  In essence, your group will create a "case study"... Each week, we will be focusing on a different aspect of the project. The Total budget for this project is $25,000. Week 1 - Physical Plant The exterior dimensions of the building are 120' x 60' the exterior walls are poured concrete, while the interior walls are typical commercial metal stud framing. The building is single story, and is on a slab foundation. There is no sub-floor or basement. The manufacturing facility and the warehouse both have an open 12' ceiling. The office areas have an 8' dropped ceiling. You can estimate the interior dimensions of the rooms if necessary. How would you wire this building? Where would you locate drops? What networking equipment would you buy? What kind of cable? What kind of connectors? Don't forget data jacks, etc. What are your estimated costs (be sure to itemize). The current data requirements would be met by either a 100mbps or 1000mbps network. Future plans call for increased use of technology...

The Royal Crown Case Study

...Royal Crown Hotel - Barcelona Case Study Scenario As the Event Planner for International Events you were given a brief to find and organize a pharmaceutical product launch and conference for Lombard Pharmaceuticals in Spain. You selected The four star Royal Crown Hotel , Barcelona as the venue mainly because there had been excellent on-line reviews, the conference facilities met your clients requirements and the sister Crown Hotel was within 1 miles walking distance of the main venue. It was also within budget. There were 500 delegates attending the conference of which 276 had chosen to bring partners along. However, following the conference in June 2013, you were called into your managers office to discuss the series of telephone conversations that had taken place that morning. Your manager, Richard Whittington and the client are both absolutely livid. From the clients point of view it had been a complete disaster. The first phone call had been from the CEO of Lombard Pharmaceuticals. ‘I had hoped that by having our Product Launch and Conference booked by a supposedly professional Events Planning company that the launch would run extremely smoothly and the hotel venue would have the requisite location, facilities and level of service required. However, the whole event was a complete shambles and has damaged our image in the eyes of our customers. Just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Didn't anyone check that the route from the Airport to the...

McNulty • Reprint R1003X Purchased by robert duboff (robert.duboff@hawkpartners.com) on January 12, 2012 In an unthinkable crisis, a bank’s chief executive has to make a fast decision. HBR CASE STUDY The CEO Can’t Afford to Panic by Eric J. McNulty COPYRIGHT © 2010 HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL PUBLISHING CORPORATION. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Gerald Smarten, CEO of Kaspa Financial Services, was presiding over the regular Tuesday morning executive committee meeting in the glass-walled conference room that looked east over Massachusetts Bay. The management team was wrestling with the complexities of acquiring Huadong, a Shanghai-based investment firm. He glanced at his watch: 8:10 already, and they still had three more agenda items to work through. “I just don’t trust their valuation of all of their assets,” said Sarah Hicks, Kaspa’s CFO. “The securities are straightforward, but—” She stopped mid-sentence as the building shook and a low rumble rose up from below. She and her colleagues looked at one another and then, almost as one, rushed to the window. Smoke was billowing out of the subway entrance across from Boston’s historic South Station. Traffic had stopped, and people were pouring into the street. “Oh my God!” exclaimed Ben Lee, the firm’s general counsel. “There’s a fire.” “Or worse,” Smarten said quietly. Just a...

Riverbank Erosion Displacees in Bangladesh: Need for Institutional Response and Policy Intervention

...Bangladesh 2. University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh ABSTRACT: Environmental refugees are one of the most burning issues at this time throughout the world. Bangladesh, a riverine country, is suffering from acquit riverbank erosion which compels millions of her population to be displaced from their place of origin. As such, 283 locations, 85 towns and growth centers, along with 2400 kilometers of riverbank line in Bangladesh are vulnerable to erosion. The major rivers e.g., the Padma, the Jamuna, and the Meghna, erode several thousand hectares of floodplain making thousands of people landless and homeless every year. Along with the floodplain, Bangladesh loses several kilometers of roads, railways, and flood-control embankments annually. No other disaster is as disastrous as riverbank erosion and ‘Internally Displaced Populations’ (IDP) face many unavoidable problems at different stages of displacement. Displacement marginalized them in respect of livelihood patterns and psycho-physical troubles. Such forty million homeless people in Bangladesh are compelled to lead a floating life. Riverbank erosion plays a major role in socio-environmental changes. The displaced people of riverbank erosion experience substantial socio-economic impoverishment and marginalization as a consequence of involuntary displacement from their original residence. Findings of a social survey carried out in 2008 on the erosion-hit displaced people in Chapai Nawabganj and Rajshahi districts are discussed in this paper...

...management, the IDNDR – Yokoyama message emphasising on pre-disaster mitigation and preparedness, earthquake damage reduction initiatives taken such as preparation of building codes and guidelines and disaster mitigation for sustainable development. Then, the major causes of severe damage observed in nonengineered buildings in the past earthquakes are presently briefly and critical elements to be incorporated in new constructions are highlighted. Methodology for seismic retrofitting of stone houses developed, implemented and verified by the author in the field is introduced. Next, costs and benefits of earthquake prevention measures are indicated. Finally a practically feasible and economically viable scheme of earthquake resistant new building construction and seismicretrofitting of existing unsafe buildings is outlined. INTRODUCTION The non-engineered buildings considered in this paper are those which are spontaneously and informally constructed in various countries in the traditional manner without any or little intervention by qualified architects and engineers in their design. Such buildings involve field stone, fired brick, concrete blocks, adobe or rammed earth, wood or a combination of these traditional locally available materials in the wall construction. Cement, lime or clay mud are used for the mortars. Reinforced concrete lintels and floor and roof slabs and beams are also used. In some cases, use of reinforced concrete or steel columns and beams is also...

Telemedicine

...Papers ................................................................................................................................. Keynote presentation Q Telemedicine support for the developing world Richard Wootton Centre for Online Health, University of Queensland, Australia Summary Telemedicine has been used for some years in the industrialized world, albeit with rather mixed success. There is also a considerable literature on the potential use of telemedicine for the developing world. However, there are few reports of the actual use of telemedicine there. A review identified five telemedicine networks providing second opinions; each network had been in operation for over five years. Although they have different aims and methods of operation, they exhibit some common features. In particular, none of them appear to be dealing with markedly increasing referral rates. Rough calculations suggest that only about 0.1% of the potential telemedicine demand from the developing world is being met. Possible reasons include the referrers being too busy and a perceived loss of control. If this analysis is correct, then the right strategy for future telemedicine in developing countries will be to concentrate on the construction of within-country networks that demonstrably alter health outcomes, can be shown to be cost-effective and sustainable, and will provide a model for other countries to copy. ..............................................................
